Worst experience I've had at an East Asian BBQ place so far
I went with 2 friends for dinner. We ordered from the all you can eat ultimate menu, which has a base price of $39.99 per person.
Beef bulgogi - genuinely tasty, the only meat that had both a good flavor and texture, easily the best item among what we ordered Beef tongue - decent but a bit too tough for my liking Chadolbagi - too fatty and tough LA galbi - also too fatty and tough, but well seasoned Gunmandu - decent...I can see someone who likes vegetable dumplings enjoying these, but I significantly prefer meat ones, so I'm admittedly biased here Gyeranjjim - decent...I was pleasantly surprised with this one, easily the best steamed egg I've had (most are too soggy for my liking) Beef ganjang butter bibimbap - I thought it was decent, but the taste and smell were unusual. One of my friends said it tasted like Cheez-Its (which he doesn't like). Denjang jigae - I didn't taste this one, but my friend who ordered it thought it was alright. Banchan - I only tried the spicy pickled cabbage and radish. Both were fine.
One of my friends also thought that some of the meat wasn't salted enough. For dipping, we were given sesame oil, an oil-based chili sauce, a thick brown spicy pepper-based sauce, soy sauce, and vinegar. The third one was easily the best, but I've seen better options for a spicy sauce at similar restaurants.
The booth we were seated in was extremely cramped and didn't have enough space for everything we ordered. At least 2 of us were sweating a bit from the heat emanating from the grill. Our waitress could've been a bit more attentive; it took us too long to get our first water refill. At the end of the meal, we were upset to find out that a tip of 18% of the base price was included in our bill. After tax and tip, the total came to $49.79 for each of us. Bad value for the overall experience.
I would've been better off staying home and ordering Gyu-Kaku through DoorDash. It may be an international Japanese chain rather than a local Korean spot, but I could have gotten a very filling and much tastier meal for less than what each of us spent at Korea House.
Between this experience and how far the restaurant is from where my friends and I live, we are...
Read moreJust got back from eating here and it was probably the worst service experience I’ve ever had. It was me and my friends first time getting Korean BBQ and we made that extremely clear to our server. We also asked a lot of questions to try and decide what would be best for our group. The server answered like she was brand new because she at first told us that at least two people had to do the all you can eat and that was it (we had 3). Then she came back and said, no everyone has to do it, which was fine because she had explained that we can have whatever we want and try all of it. So we tried all of it and being our first time, we didn’t like some of it, which we put off to the side once we decided we didn’t like it. We kept ordering the LA Gilbi (which were AWESOME and the only reason this review is 2 stars instead of 1) and also had those bones in the discard pile. The server then sees this pile and starts freaking out about how she’s going to get in trouble and telling us we needed to eat it and just causing a scene about it and we were really confused because we weren’t ordering things to waste them, we wanted to try everything because that’s what she said we could do. I personally love the pork belly I’ve ordered other places, but was not a fan of their pork belly at all and I was not going to try eat what I didn’t like. Then she brought another server over to have him tell us that they wouldn’t charge us for the scraps. Which we were again confused by because no one had told us about this rule and it would have been less annoying had we not asked a lot of questions before deciding. As good as some food items were (chicken bulgogi, beef bulgogi, LA Gilbi), the service was just so bad that I cannot recommend...
Read moreI had been wanting to eat at the Korea House on Colonial since my friends had recommended it. We arrived at the restaurant around 8:24. I have had Korean food before but I had never encountered an all you can eat. We were eager to try the BBQ so we opted to wait for a table with a grill. We waited 30 min and watched as the wait staff chaotically went from table to table. There was also this unbearable chemical cleaning product while we waited. The smell was a stark contrast to the dirty looking restaurant. I later observed that the wait staff was cleaning the tables with a spic and span spray. When my party was seated, we explained that this was out first time trying the all you can eat. We were quickly dissuaded from the all you can eat because the kitchen closed at 9:40pm. We assured our waitress that we would order everything up front. She said that she would go and get us our waters and then promptly fell off the face of the earth. After 15min of sitting and getting no service, we left without eating. First, I don’t like to be ignored. The wait staff knew we had been waiting and I feel they ignored us because they wanted us to leave. Second, it’s incredibly embarrassing to be seated and then leave without eating while everyone stares at you. We landed up going to the Bulgogi House Korean Restaurant down the street. The experience there was night and day. The wait staff was extremely friendly and they even spent time with us and showed us how to cook our food. It was one of the most pleasant dining experiences I...
