Sawa Sushi & Hibachi — Restaurant in Overland Park

The sushi was ok, but they brought out two rolls on one plate, the rolls were small on these two rolls. We had asked them when they were going to bring the one we ordered and they said they had but the roll we had ordered had asparagus in it. Both rolls on the plate were the same, both had white tuna and ahi tuna so we thought they were the same. The "second" roll on the double roll plate did not have asparagus so either they didn't serve us the one we ordered or it was only one roll?! Not sure but I left it at that paid the bill which was more than I think it was worth and went on my way. They do not offer any starters on the house such as miso or a salad like other sushi spots I have been too which is unfortunate especially with the price of the rolls. I'd place this restaurant as the best of the okay sushi category, meaning they're mid tier but great for that tier. Their salmon skin salad was the best I've had in KC. Their sashimi was cut oddly but was thick. It wasn't the freshest but it also wasn't bad. I really liked their miso soup but it wasn't a unique riff just a solid execution. I only had one sushi roll but it was delightful. Between the variety they posed and their execution I liked this place. The atmosphere was also... Dark and relaxed which I appreciate. The staff was professional and kind, although not overly friendly which I appreciate honestly. I got a corner table in seconds, hot tea in a minute, and main course food in 20. It was a very nice experience. I'd still recommend other places higher but if you're in the area or you'd like salmon skin, try this place out...

Never ever again! Today was the first and last time I will ever eat food from this establishment. I ordered the "fantastic roll" and a side of rice in case I didn't like the roll. I was so excited because I absolutely love sushi and haven't had it in awhile. I decided to try this spot since its close to my job. Well the first bite I took I noticed it had a lake watery taste (I thought to myself that since it's fish it's probably nothing) well I was completely wrong. After eating a second piece I was sick to my stomach, the taste was so foul words can't describe how disgusting it was. I flipped two of the other pieces of salmon over and sure enough it was completely discolored and had a thick layer of black stuff (I'm assuming might be mold). I'm extremely disappointed.
