☆☆ Update ☆☆ After my review, I was contacted by Julian King. He offered all the right words in response, but upon further review I learned he was the same individual who made comments during our visit. When he looked at our table, he said, “That explains it.” We would like clarification on what exactly he meant by that. The only identifying factor at our table was that my husband is Mexican. If that remark was connected to race, it’s deeply concerning and absolutely unacceptable—especially coming from ownership. I am leaving this update in hopes that anyone above him will take notice and ensure that Stroud’s upholds the respectful environment its customers and staff deserve.
Date of Visit: August 23, 2025 Location: Stroud’s Overland Park Party Size: 3 guests
We’ve dined at Stroud’s many times and have always had a positive experience until this visit.
Our server was pleasant, attentive, and got our food out quickly and hot. My order was slightly off (an extra piece of chicken), but it wasn’t an issue. However, my husband’s chicken fried steak tasted completely off...spoiled or chemical-like. He took one bite and pushed it aside. When our server checked on us, she asked about it, and we politely explained the issue. She offered a replacement, but he declined and simply asked for it to be removed from the bill, which she agreed to.
What happened next is what prompted this review.
We were seated in the back of the restaurant when several staff members began walking to the back door and peering out toward the open brick area where we were sitting. A taller man came to the door, glanced directly at our table (only two tables were occupied in our area), and audibly said, “Oh that explains it, I’m not even going to go out there, he’s just going to argue with me.” Our server responded with, “I know, I know,” as she threw her hands up.
We heard the entire exchange, we weren’t being difficult, we were calm and respectful, and simply declined a dish that didn’t taste right. My husband let the server know he didn’t appreciate the comment, and while she tried to pretend she didn’t know what he was talking about, we had clearly witnessed the exchange.
The comment was unprofessional, unkind, and completely unnecessary. As paying guests who have supported this establishment for years, it was disappointing to feel talked about and mocked by staff over a very simple request.
Just a reminder: your diners can hear you. If you’re going to talk poorly about them, at least make sure it’s quiet, or better yet, don’t...
Read moreWe went to this establishment tonight for my birthday dinner, we are new to the kc area and I had yet to try it. My absolute favorite is chicken so my family chose this place. Our server was Peggy M and she was phenomenal! The food was not! I ordered the chicken fried chicken meal, it was so grease loaded and soft it was nasty, I requested a new one, Kevin the GM brought me back the exact same one but had thrown it in a pan to “crisp” it up more; I again request a new one as the grease overload is still present, at this time we also request a new steak as my 12yr old ordered medium rare and received close to medium well, our amazing server complied and took the plates to be corrected. Kevin comes to our table and proceeds to argue with MY CHILD about her being wrong on her steaks preparedness, at this point I’m beginning to become enraged, no grown man will argue with my 12yr old daughter, he berates her and in an extremely condescending tone tells her she is wrong and he is right! I ask is a medium rare steak not pink in the middle (full disclosure I attended culinary school so I know the answer) he responds irritated that I dare ask him a question instead of his verbal abuse continuing with my CHILD, and states it was if she wants rare I can make it rare. She is now afraid to respond and barely whispers she will just take the original steak back, he managed to make my 12yr old feel insignificant and wrong about a STEAK!! He left and I have to reassure her that she was not wrong in any aspect, I should not have to do this because his customer service skills are so horrendous to speak to a child this way, it’s appalling! The steak is returned, yes the exact same incorrectly cooked steak! At this point she just eats bits and gives up asking for the correct meal, I receive a plate dropped and when I say dropped I mean you hear the plate abruptly hit the table as it’s tossed in front of me and Kevin walks away with no words spoken, and it is the original piece of chicken I requested to be replaced, AGAIN! For the 3 time!! Now I’m livid!! I send it back requesting no food, mind you this was supposed to be my birthday meal and Kevin’s ignorance and appalling customer service skills have now ruined it and offended my child which I take as a personal attack! I am not sure what training your management team under goes but Kevin needs a complete overhaul!!! He is giving your establishment the worst exposure...
Read moreWent to the OP Stroud's on Tuesday afternoon to celebrate my birthday. Got there a 1545hrs and very few customer in the restaurant at that time. After sitting in the booth for about 15 minutes I had to get up and ask 3 waitress (that was just standing around talking) told them we are ready to order and that we were running short on time. They stated we are not your waitress she'll be there soon. About 5 minutes later she came to the table and took our order. You could tell by the way she was talking with us she was put out by doing here job. She brought our drinks and soon after out our salad and soup. We had our 1yr. grandson with use and were feeding him, while we waited for our meal to come out. The waitress didn't come to check on us or refill our drinks. My wife had to get up twice and get napkins at the counter for grandson. The empty dishes on the table from soup and salad sitting on the table with a pile of napkins, and no one came to pick them up or ask if we needed anything. At 1535 hrs I got up and went and talked with the hostess, and asked what the issue was with getting our food or service. She went and talked with someone and about 5 minutes later the waitress came with 2 plates for our meal, and said the food is cooking. She didn't take the dirty dish or anything. I was upset at this point and said could you please clean this up and get up drinks. She came back and gave me some tea and took some of the dirty dishes. She came back a short time later with 6 chicken legs on a plate and said this is someone else food but you can have it. Then came out with a small bowl of potatoes and small bowl of gravy, and green beans. Then returned with with check and to go containers and two rolls in a to go bag. The very worst restaurant service I've very had. Talked with the manager about this problem, he stated that she usually is a good server, and what would you like me to do. I stated that I don't want anything. He should of just told me that he would take care of the bill and not to worry about it. I go to the Stroud's in the Northland about once a month and have never had a issue. I love the place. That is what I told the manager, with all the choice to eat I came here and this is the kind of experience that we had. Go to the Northland Stroud's it's a great experience, stay away from...
