Rajni is a south Indian restaurant featuring cuisine from the state of Tamil Nadu. The restaurant is named after a Tamil movie superstar "Rajni"kant. They serve Authentic South Indian food at reasonable pricing with average service and great ambience. The food is very vegetarian friendly.

The restaurant has picked quiet some buzz in North Jersey area for their Thali. Thali is a traditional Indian lunch platter served with rice/roti and a bunch of sides. Rajni offers authentic Tamil thali served on a banana leaf with (a mound of) rice, a roti and a bunch of sides. I had tried their veg thali which comes with dal, sambar - a vegetable lentil soup, korma - a spicy vegetable stew, poriyal - a dry vegetable fry typically made with some grated coconut, kara kozhambu - a spicy and tangy curry, rasam - a thin spicy tomato broth, some veg biryani and a dessert. The thali was of pretty good quality and reminded of food I had in Chennai. This is one of the very few restaurants in New Jersey, that serve Thali and I believe the only serving Tamil styled one.

I had visited the restaurant with a big group from work and the place was big enough to accommodate. Along with the thali we tried a bunch of appetizers. The onion pakora and chili bajji were great, kara paniyaram especially was fabulous. The apps were served hot and very tasty. The service could have been definitely improved, it seemed like the place was understaffed at the front of house.

Recommendations: Appetizers: Kara Paniyaram, Onion Pakora & Chili bajji Veg Thali

Overall, the restaurant is definitely worth trying especially for their Tamil thali. The service could have been better and be mindful that the food served here can be...

we got a dosa and it was okay. there wasn't that much filling or spread out evenly. the top portion of the dosa was good and crispy but the bottom was soggy even though we started eating right after it was served. it was surprising that the dosa wasn't hot since there weren't that many customers there. would have thought it would be fresh and warm. we also wished there was more sauce. it was odd that one of the slots was empty.... overall we made do with what we were given. the server didn't really check on us or check if we were okay. we also got a biriyani. we asked for goat but they didn't have that and didn't tell us until a while after so we settled on chicken. I'm used to the meat being shredded but this was just a drumstick and a small chunk of chicken in the middle of the bowl. the rice was tasty though and it was a bit spicy. it wasn't mentioned it would be spicy though anyone who can't tolerate spice would not be able to eat this but we both enjoy spice so we were fine for the most part. it was served with yogurt and some broth? the server didn't identify what he brought and was nowhere to be found afterwards for us to ask. we had to wait a while before we were able to get the check. the positive thing was that it's 10% off for cash. honestly was expecting more from this place since it's in Parsippany and there's an Indian population here but was disappointed. will need to venture to Edison next time for a dosa fix next time. the food wasn't bad but it wasn't something that would make me want...

May 2025 Came 3 times in last two weeks . We enjoyed our non veg thali today . Thank you!

May 2025 Went went many more times there in 2024 once in two weeks on an average . However couldn’t visit this year until today. As usual we enjoyed our dinner . The shrimp thakku with parotta was next level and I thoroughly enjoyed enjoyed it along other dishes. Suddenly I teased I missed this food for many months this year until now . Planning to resume my weekly visit here :) I appreciate the chief taking so much care in making the dishes . Thanks for making my day.

2024

Visit-2&3- went back for the dosas and idlis and vadas and filter coffee. They were delicious . Specially the chutneys are nice this time.

Visit-1 - people here are very polite and nice. we enjoyed the Mysore masala dosa and still left with the craving for it. Idiappam with coconut milk was heaven. The coconut milk was prepared with some spices which made is delicious. And also tried some curries which are as usual. We will continue to come here for the food and lovely people.

2023 Visit-5 Visited after a long time . Enjoyed the idli bada combo and set dosai and Mysore masala dosa. The chatnis were nice specially the green one. I mostly like all the foods that I have tried in this place. I like this place, Feels like a local restaurant in India .

Visit 4-We had bhai vittu biriyani today and it was delicious. Also the Thali was good as usual .the Mysore park was also good and...
