You may call it a sandwich, you may call it a wrap, Gyro, Shawarma, Doner have common origin stories. They are made with marinated meat stacked on a vertical rotisserie and spit roasted.
At a glance, they might look the same, but they come in countless avatars. Two Shawarmas from two different regions are not twins, they are Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Devito.
On Main Street Paterson (NJ) you will find the dream team of Gyro / Shawarma / Doner. Northern NJ and in particular Paterson and Clifton are now the global capital of this super delicious sandwich. In this nuanced and competitive market has arrived a new heavy weight champion Doner joint – Dedem Kozde Doner (1021 Main Street Paterson NJ). On my visit to Dedem Kozde Doner, I found a doner floating like a butterfly and stinging like a bee. Only time will tell if this becomes the GOAT Doner in NJ.
What makes this Doner outstanding ?
For one, the meat is roasted on charcoal. This is how it was done centuries ago. Even in the Mediterranean region, there are just a handful of places that still use charcoal. Needless to say, the charcoal, the smoke adds a flavor to the Doner that you will not find in many places.
The flatbread wrap, called the lavash, is made fresh, it is made right in front of you (yes that fresh).
So what makes this doner outstanding ? It is the charcoal roasted meat and fresh lavash. The “Kozde” is Dedem Kozde Doner,...
Read moreI went with great enthusiasm to a place that I thought would be a great spot to introduce my country, but it turned out to be a huge disappointment as a restaurant experience. Firstly, the waiter was overly familiar in his conversation and frankly, it is not right to be so close to someone you don't know, especially a customer. With just one waiter trying to handle all the tables, he couldn't properly attend to any of them. Now, getting to the point, our order, I am not exaggerating at all, arrived one hour later. The reason being they ran out of kebabs and had to put on new ones. How dare you make me spend 1 hour with just hot peppers and dry olives. If only you had told us, we could have gone somewhere else to eat accordingly. In the end, the kebabs arrived 1 hour later. They arrived, but to our surprise, instead of leaf kebabs, they served us literally greasy minced meat. We make this at home too. By the way, this is not grilled kebab; it's cooked on a gas stove. Then, the waiter says, "Let me bring you dessert because you waited so long." The dessert they brought had no difference from their kebabs. It was both stale and had no syrup left. I guess they bring out the leftover desserts under the guise of a complimentary offering. And that liquid in a cardboard cup that does not resemble tea at all at the end. You absolutely do not deserve the...
