Alexander’s seems to consider themselves a high end restaurant, or at least on the high end of the middle. My recent visit to this J Alexander’s seems to prove in my mind that they fall short of this goal in all but price.
I sat at the bar early on a Wednesday evening and ordered a glass of wine while I perused the menu. I watched the bartender pour my glass and noticed that the bottle she was pouring from, emptied as she was filling my order. I expected to see her open another bottle to top off my drink but she simply placed the drink in front of me. I figured if they are charging near the full bottle retail for a single glass, they should at least be generous with the pour. I later observed other servers pouring wine at a more generous and expected portion.
I ordered a simple chicken sandwich with a plain baked potato. What I received was a chicken sandwich on a bun that was soaked from the chicken and a baked potato that was uncooked in the center. I notified the staff and they replaced the bun as well as the potato. I have no complaints about the efficiency of the staff but they seemed not to really care that my order was not up to par. Perhaps I’m outside the norm and most people like mushy buns and hard potatoes. Besides being too wet, I also had to cut off fat and grilse from my chicken before I could consume it, witch I wouldn’t even expect from a fast food establishment. I have had chicken sandwiches in other parts of the city with a much more generous portion that I don’t have to trim, for a much cheaper price. So again I think “where is the value in this restaurant?”
There were two manager “types” that I observed during my visit. Both were relatively tall males, late 20’s or early 30’s and dressed nice. One was in a brown suit jacket with brown shoes. The other in dress clothes without the jacket, dark pants, med-blue shirt and black shoes. I’ll refer to them as jacket and jacket-less.
I sat at the very end of the bar right near the food counter. During my wait for food, I observed jacket-less at the food counter sprinkling a toping on a dish with his bare hands. I expect the chiefs and assistants who I very much hope wash their hands before handling food to do this, but not a manager who is perhaps shaking hands, handling money, phones, pens and other common bacteria-ridden items. I also observed one of the bar staff pushing olives off a spear into a drink using her ungloved and I’m sure unwashed fingers into the unsuspecting person’s drink.
Later in the evening a staff member knocked one of the two serving tongs off the food counter and onto the floor. Jacketed-manager was standing nearby and picked the tongs up, wiped them with a napkin and placed them back on the counter for general usage. Unless the napkins were soap-infused, there was no cleanser involved to sanitize what had just been dropped where people walk.
I may try a J Alexander’s again but it will never...
Read moreOur family and party of 5 had dinner here last night. The reservation was set for 7:30. My daughter requested a burger for her birthday dinner from J Alexander’s so we drove to Ptree Corners from Buckhead to make it happen. As we arrived we were greeted and sat at a round table in Patrick’s section. A place card was sat on the table with our party info, server name, and special occasion birthday note.
I would consider us to be an easy to accommodate party and while we weren’t expecting Marcel or Chops style food or atmosphere, we did expect decent service.
First, it took several minutes for the server to even approach our table for our drink order. As Patrick brought our drinks, no tray was used, leaving fingerprints on the half washed glasses.
We ordered two appetizers and five entrees. The appetizer share plates were all visibly dirty, even in dim light. The burger meat had a game-y flavor or just wasn’t fresh. Unlucky for us, we placed an order for an additional burger to-go for a late night snack to share. The prime rib was an unacceptable cut as it was FULL of fat. I was lucky to get 5/6 bites out of it. My dog however, enjoyed it. The French dip and the filet were amazing.
Each time the servers brought the next course or refill, they would leave the previous courses empty plates and glasses. They almost tried to sit a new plate on top of an old one. As we looked around there were handfuls of empty tables loaded with dirty plates long after guests had departed. It seems like no emphasis is put on pre bussing the guests table to refresh for the next course. Bummer.
The manager did approach our table and ask us how things were. As we said “okay”, he looked at our table, turned around and left. Even after seeing empty plates, empty glasses, and empty drinks galore, we did not see him approach Patrick to follow up with us.
Because the server wasn’t sales motivated, we had to ask for a desert menu which consisted of 3 items. We decided against them. My father in law had to ask that the table be cleared for his granddaughter’s birthday before we left, to which Patrick took the plates and cups we had stacked for him. After that request was made Patrick asked if he can bring the complementary birthday dessert instead of just simply paying attention to the place card and bringing it unannounced.
As we were leaving for the night, my husband asked the hostess how many covers they had for the night. They had 40 reservations and a little over 200 heads. There is just no excuse other than poor training, poor customer service, and lack of care.
Really disappointed in the price we paid for the quality of service and food we received. Wished we would’ve kept our original reservation at...
Read moreThis place was highly recommended by someone so we made reservations for Valentine's dinner. Well, we made early reservations for Sat. (16th) and were seated promptly. Looked around and there were about 10 people at the bar and the section we were seated in only had 2 other occupied tables (with about 6 people total). The server greeted us and she was really sweet. We started off with two Top Shelf Margaritas while we were deciding what to eat. The drinks were great! The bartender did a really nice job! I ordered a rib eye and smashed potatoes (because they were out of bake potatoes at 4:00) and my friend ordered ribs. When my order came out the potatoes were ice COLD!!! I sent them back and received hot ones. By this time I had cut into my steak and it was COLD and totally under cooked!!! I sent it back and it was cooked properly. I was disappointed by this time because instead of bringing out a fresh platter with potatoes they only brought the steak and guess what the potatoes had cooled off, but I kept them. Although the steak had a good taste I didn't appreciate the entire "meal experience" because the meal was not cooked and served properly the first time. The manager on duty did not come over to greet us or anyone in our section because he seemed to be otherwise engaged in a 20 minute visit with some other patrons/friends. He made a couple of trips to the kitchen to bring them "something" to try and they appeared to have a nice visit. I was waiting for him to come over and see what the issue was, but he never stopped by to see why food had been sent back. I could understand IF the place was busy, but it was not, like not at all! I am still undecided if I will try them again, because the overall dining experience wasn't what I expected for the reputation of this place and of course the prices. IF, I decide to go back it won't be anytime soon as I feel I can have a more enjoyable time some other place. On a brighter note, my friend did...
