I will keep it real. I have been to Jamaica about 14 times and have had friends/boyfriends who are Jamaican. I cook Jamaican Food. I know good Jamaican food and Kool Runnings has it.
I went for brunch and they had an all you can eat breakfast buffet which I was unsure of at first, but they had Ackee and Saltfish. I LOVE ACKEE AND SALTFISH. Therefore the 19.99 price was worth it because I believe I had three (large) servings of it. Add in the boiled dumpling, fried dumpling, boiled banana and callaloo and you got yourself a traditional Jamaican breakfast and it was all good. All. Of. It. Oh and the plantains WERE THE BOMB! I had probably... a lot of them!
I have to admit the majority of the items on the buffet were fished based, which I actually prefer. There was Ackee and Saltfish, Saltfish and veggies and Mackeral. I had both saltfish dishes and they were great. There was an option to have a made to order omelet, but you had to ask and really who wants eggs when you can have cooked food!
I was with a group and others ordered stewed chicken and I also got a taste of the curry chicken, which was good. The portions are huge!! A fellow table mate ordered I believe the snapper and I love it because it was the whole snapper ( be prepared if you don't want to see the head) and he cleaned it right off the bone. Looked delicious!! Someone ordered some patties and I should have asked if they were house made or bought. If there were Juicy patties I need to go back but now that I think on it, they didn't look like it. They didn't come with cocoa bread though, and I am not sure if that is an option. After the heavy meal we got some fresh fruit which is always a nice way to end the meal.
I definitely need to go back for some oxtails and goat and I want to based on my first experience! Otherwise what I had was great. The service was good especially for a large group. The price is fair for the large portions, I mean most people had left overs! And the buffet is worth it if you are an Ackee and Saltfish lover like me especially since off the menu it's 12.99. Definitely give Kool Runnings a try! And speak up with any questions or concerns, the staff/owners were more...
Read moreTeleport to Jamaica: I had some blackened king fish, yellow yam, green banana and collalou! Omg that was fiya! They put a sauce on it that makes it taste like it's too good to even be in a styrofoam container! It was pretty too with perfectly sliced yellow and red pepper laid gently on top. You could tell that the cook took pride in making that plate. That dish tastes like high end restaurant quality! I'm not even the type that would choose a fish dish in sauce but I'm glad I did. It was slightly creamy and pure deliciousness! A sop up wit de bread type a sin-tin! Lol! But for real, I had to set it aside and eat the rest the next day because I didn't want the experience to end. If I close my eyes it took me right back to Jamaica! Wow!
Updating to a 5 star as recently I have not had to wait on my food and the food quality has noticeably improved but don't get me wrong, they were pretty good before, but now it just seems better! Seems like they have overcome the transition from 2020 holdups and are flowing smoothly. No more long lines. They also are on Grub Hub and my food is ready when I arrive.
See my previous review below... The food is good- authentic Jamaican food but the service is slow. You probably will have to wait on your order (as if you were in JA) but it is worth the wait. We eat there often. We typically get the curry chicken, stew chicken, curry goat or ox tails. The portion sizes are generous. Also the fish is made fresh to order. Been eating here since the 90s when they were on Memorial Drive. Go if you want real Jamaican food. They also have beef patties available on most days, fresh ginger beer and...
Read moreMy first time eating here was 8/13. I really enjoy Caribbean food and wanted to give them a try. I ordered the jerk chicken and ox tails with rice and peas. When I was finally able to sit and try to enjoy my meal, I was a bit disappointed. The food was okay but not what was expected. To make matters worst, when I went to eat the jerk chicken, it was undercooked in the middle. I called the store back and spoke to Mr. Hines. He stated that has never happen before. I told him I'm literally across the way and didn't mind bringing the food back for him to see himself. He stated they had closed shop but he'll have someone go in and remake. I told Mr. Hines that wasn't necessary and that I'll be back in the area on Monday and could come by then if ot was okay. Mr. Hines agreed and gave me his personal number and said call him on Monday, 8/15 when I was back in the area. That he'll call his staff and let them know I was on the way for the remake. Monday came, I called Mr. Hines about 830pm. Atleast 4 different times. Each time my call was forwarded to voice-mail. Okay perhaps, he's busy at the time. So I left a detailed voice message for him. As of today, 8/17, I have not heard anything back from Mr. Hines. Some customer service. Giving the amount of 2 meals and veggies, I prefer my food NOT to be undercooked. The peas were hard in the rice and beans. I most definitely will NOT be spending my hard earned money here any more. Nor will I refer them to...
