I have to say this is the most desired place I wanted to go on my vacation. You read all about them and how over-the-top the food is supposed to be we even met some people on our vacation and brought him along just try Killen's BBQ. There was quite a line out front when we arrived even more eager to want to try. We waited a good half-hour got in there smelled amazing everything looked amazing weren't you scared away about the pricing used to be an old school fitting that it cafeteria style grab a tray tell them what you want get your food pay sit down seems that everybody in the group got something let somebody else didn't have so we got to try most of the things on the menu. Show the highlights ribs were okay coleslaw was very plain vinegar-based macaroni and cheese was repulsive other people in the group said it was okay but I noticed nobody finished the macaroni and cheese turkey was so so was juicy I had a good taste but nothing very special. The pulled pork 10 point scale 6 or 7 so I'd say it was decent their sauces which we had four of them on the table we're very good give them high ratings for their sauces did make the pork better. So for the brisket we had their regular brisket and one of the guys in our group actually splurged on the wagyu brisket. So the consensus at the table the brisket was not good at all. Under seasoned we're all of us at the table like more of a salt and pepper brisket which this was but definitely did not have enough salt in it. The Smoke on the brisket was so over smoked it ruined it heavy heavy smoke pretty much made it in edible extremely bitter aftertaste even if you tried to cut the outside bark off and smoke ring the brisket was very smokey definitely more smoke on the wagyu brisket then on their regular brisket but they were both so over smoked they were both done to the proper doneness they didn't break apart but nobody at the table finish the brisket the guy with the wagyu brisket gave it to me to take. I'll put it to you this way I took it with me back to the hotel try eating it later that night and threw it all away it was even worse cold. Well I have to tell you what a disappointment for all of us the consensus of the group was thumbs down we all have you eaten much better barbecue at Mom and Pop places it was such a let-down I'm writing this a couple weeks after the experience and it's still stands out as a...
Read moreProbably some of the best bbq I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying. Parking is a bit small, but they do offer additional parking behind the building. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very classy, with flowers decorating each table setting, it almost felt as if we were under dressed, but it was still casual and welcoming. They have three different signature bbq sauces on each table, coffee, tangy, and sweet.
My family and I ordered multiple dishes and side dishes, ranging from the two meat plates, the nachos, and one kids chicken tender plate. The brisket was juicy, tender, and packed with smokey flavor. Absolutely delicious without bbq sauce. The pork ribs were perfectly cooked, smoked, and while a little on the tougher side, it was still phenomenal. The sausage was a bit spicy, but good nonetheless. The brisket nachos were fulfilling, packed with meat, loaded, the queso made the chips soggy fast, but was still delicious. Even the kids chicken tenders were crisp and delicious.
Each meat plate came with pickles, pickled onions, jalapeno, and two sides. White bread was offered on request. The cream corn was creamy, rich, deliciously buttered and flavorful. The mashed potatoes were smooth, gravy delicious and not too peppery for white gravy. The macaroni and cheese is not the Kraft kind, but made in house and cheesy, big macaroni noodles, and one of the best Ive ever had. The potato salad was okay, while it was still good, it was a little on the sour side.
Dessert was of course ordered at the end and the creme brulee cheesecake is to die for. The sugar layer on top was carmelized and had that perfect crack when broken through with a spoon and the cheesecake itself was smooth and velvety. The pecan pie was a little more on the crumbly side, as the pecans fell apart, rather than stuck together, but it was still delicious and sweet.
A delicious bbq place, worth the drive, as we were staying in inner Houston....
Read moreMy family and I went for my birthday dinner since I wanted bbq to celebrate. I thought it's my birthday, we could splurge a little on dinner. I've heard people talk about Killens BBQ since it opened, so wanted to try it out. And boy, were we disappointed! For appetizers, we ordered pork belly burnt ends and deviled eggs topped with chopped brisket. The pork belly burnt ends were chewy and sticky mess. It wasn't tender at all. It was supposed to be cooked in bbq sauce but it was more candied rather than covered in bbq sauce. The deviled eggs with chopped brisket were really good. For our main, I ordered two meat plate with wet brisket and jalapeno sausage and potato salad and baked beans as my sides. My husband ordered two meat plate with double wet brisket and potato salad and pinto beans. My daughter ordered brisket quesadilla with rice and baked beans. And my son ordered off the kids menu with brisket and mac n cheese. And again, what a disappointment! The brisket had no flavor, no seasoning or even smoky flavor. What kind of bbq has no smoky flavor? There were bbq sauces on the table; and it seemed like the only way to eat their bbq was to slather it in their sauces to give it some flavor. Sure, bbq sauce is a nice compliment to the meat, but it can't be the only flavoring. Even my daughter's brisket quesadilla was flavorless. The only thing that gave it some taste was the cheese. The jalapeno sausage was dry. I've had sausages before and I know they can be juicy. But their sausage was so dry, I had a hard time cutting through the skin. For the sides, the potato salad was bland. There was no tanginess or even a hint of salt! How is it possible to mess up potato salad? And the baked beans was so sweet, it was almost candied. Overall, we could've saved a lot of money by just going to other smaller bbq restaurants or even other chain bbq restaurants. Sorry, but we won't...
