So...after a month of being open, some expected mishaps like those mentioned by some of the 1 star reviews such as long times for food and some miscommunication between servers and chefs which lead to some plates not being served. Now in all fairness I did order quite a few plates to test their competence in this area. Now with that said I fully expect this particular devastating issue to be remedied with time.... now this time around I only ordered two drinks so I could concentrate on the food and theres one drink...LOVE POISON " make sure its pink" supposed to be fruity and delicious. However the sake sangria was horrendous and the manager agreed saying he received similar distasteful reviews because in all honesty that drink smells like cleaning product and taste like febreeze... please remove it or alter it.
Food, for the most part a good representation of the Peruvian and Japanese fusion they want to portray "more Peruvian" though....I had the Appetizers octopus, crab salad tostones, Peruvian seafood soup, mixed seafood ceviche Nikkei, and the shoyu tenderloin tequeno.
The crab salad tostones was delicious and the Peruvian seafood soup is quite large and filling, please note...it would fill a single person up and if u order it thinking it's a small appetizer ask to split it into two or 3 separate bowls. But the soup is Absolutely delicious. The shoyu tenderloin tequeno is okay...would be better and more bang for the buck if there more meat inside.....the CEVICHE WAS ALSO VERY DELICIOUS.....ask between mild, spicy or very spicy...its an EXCELLENT ceviche.... now for the octopus the APPETIZER has a sauce on it that makes it taste better but. As octopus is already a very difficult dish to prepare I understand how restaurants do their best to serve an edible non rubbery octopus taste and with that said. The octopus appetizer was also just ok....I wanted to try the main entree one the 24 hour marinated but unfortunately wasnt able to. ....
Main entree was the Poke Nikkei lomo saltado and this was an absolute delight....the fingerling potatoes is a nice refreshing touch as opposed to the french fries that come with the classic one...but they are both delicious.
Now I hope to come back and try the level 29 octopus that's marinated for 24 hours and be impressed.... and hopefully the service and communication amongst employees have improved. Now obviously the pricing is on the higher side but I suggest u look at their menu and review pricing and plan accordingly. Now with that said, the ambience and decor is very enticing and intimate yet loud enough to have conversations without having to be heard by the next party.... the DJ maurice who was playing music was a welcome sound for the nights he's there.....and the BIG SCREEN TV OUT FRONT IS EXCELLENT for the lounge couch area outside....that's all I hope this review helps and the photos as well...oh P.S. the dessert....the toblerone dessert is...
Read moreParty of 5 people on a Wednesday night 7:30pm. Restaurant was pretty empty. We were the 4 table in there. Hostess was polite. Server came to the table, also polite. Drinks ordered. Being a Peruvian restaurant, pisco sour was in order. After 2 sips to confirm my taste, I sent back the drink since all I could taste was extremely bitter lime juice (lime the one from a bottle). So I opted for my favorite tequila with soda water (hard to mess that one up). We ordered chicken causa, corvina ceviche, grilled octopus, mahi mahi a lo macho, and lomo saltado Nikkei. The causa had good flavor but the potato mixture was grainy and chunky. The ceviche was seasoned perfectly but the fish was cut the wrong was so found ourselves struggling to chew the fiber of the fish that should have been cut or removed previously. Good ceviche, but not wow (especially for the price). Grilled octopus had anticucho flavor (aji panca marinade) and great aroma. Sadly it was a bit overbooked on the grill which made it more chewy than desired. The mahi mahi was served with calamari and shrimp. The sauce a lo macho was executed very well. The fish was served with fried plantains and I don’t think they belong with this dish. The flavors did not go well together. The mahi mahi was the biggest disappointment that night. Imagine taking a frozen fillet that you thawed out rapidly over cold water, and then proceeded to also cook rapidly and for too long. This fish was extremely chewy, and dry. I couldn’t believe that would serve a dish like dish. Lastly the lomo saltado Nikkei which is more expensive than the regular lomo saltado had a heavy note of sweet to it that deviated too much from the true lomo saltado flavor the dish is known for. The served had asked me before about the cook of the meat, my answer was medium rare. I posted the photo, and the steak was cooked medium well. The seasoning again was spot on along with the smoky (saltado) flavor. The fries were crispy as expected. The second round of drinks included glasses of wine. We saw the server completely forget about the drinks, which we could see on the side of the bar, while she was talking to other coworkers on the side of the dining room. I almost got up myself to go get our drinks. The decor of the restaurant was contemporary with lighting and good music. For the prices and menu descriptions, I expected a lot more. Too many errors in execution of these dishes left us disappointed and without a desire to return. With so many other great Peruvian restaurants in the area, I would not recommend Level 29 for a...
Read moreI arrived right around 2pm for a late lunch. I was pretty hungry by then. There was 1 other patron in the restaurant. It took a while for the waitress to show up, I had to nudge the host to encourage her. I ordered Mahi-Mahi a lo Macho. Standard menu item. The food took 30min to arrive. It looked good but didn’t taste as it looked. The fish was either very old, or re-cooked because it was dry as a bone and nearly as hard. The chef seems to like cilantro. A lot. The garnishing shrimps and calamari were over cooked as well, as these seafoods harden like rubber when over done. Two mussels rounded out the garnish. One in the shell, one off. Both were old, you could taste it. The sauce was good. Probably the high note of the dish. I’d give the sauce a 7. It only didn’t loan much of its flavor to the mains. For the whole dish, a 5 - edible. The size of the entree was on the small end. Given that I had ordered just after the 2 o’clock end of lunch orders, I wondered if they had still honored a lunch menu and served the corresponding size order. The waitress clarified to me that no, it was a dinner order. Fine. I had thought and accepted a dinner order since I was hungry and had checked the time. But the size for a dinner entree was shy. The waitress showed up for ordering. She did not deliver the food to the table. She next appeared halfway through my meal (when I clarified portion size). She then disappeared again and showed up when I had 2 or 3 bites to go, which she didn’t notice because then she disappeared for good. After some wait, I got up to go pay at the cashier. Then they directed me back to the table where she showed up. Mimic-like, no words. To add insult to injury of a bad meal, under techno music at 2:30pm and poor service, the 20% tip is mandatory and automatically included in the bill (“even for phone/online orders” as the waitress made a point of educating me). Bottom line: the food was not worth it; the service a notch below the food; the ambience was nice, except for their choice of music (for that time of day), and the hidden cost of mandatory minimum 20% tip made the whole...
