Once again, I worked through lunch, and my coworkers could hear my stomach growling from across the room. I was HUNGRY! Somebody down the hall had barbecue ribs, and that set me on my next Google search: What is the best barbecue in Pensacola?
I scrolled for a bit - 4.4, 4.3, etc. Not bad, but I wanted tope tier 4.9, but only open on Saturday. Wait, here's a 4.9, Mission BBQ. Hey, they support veterans and first responders. Let's check them out. So away I went.
I pulled up and easily found a spot. I hopped out and went inside. The moment I walked in the door, everyone stopped and waved. It struck me as a bit odd, but whatever. As I approached the counter, the young man reached across, hand extended. "Hi, I'm Nick." I introduced myself and then had one of the most unique experiences I've ever encountered at a restaurant. Nick asked if I'd ever been there before. I told him I had not, so he asked me what I had in mind. I told him I was leaning toward the pulled pork and asked him what he liked. He told me he preferred the macaroni and cheese and asked if I wanted to try it. I said sure, and I would -
That's when Nick turned and got a sample cup of Mac & cheese from the kitchen. It was hotter than all get out, but man, it was tasty! Okay, so i had to get a plate with the mac & cheese. Nick then said, "You mentioned the pulled pork, would you like to give that a try?" Absolutely! It was amazingly flavorful. "Have you ever had smoked brisket?" he asked. Yes, I have. "Do you prefer the lean brisket or the wet brisket?" Wet. Out comes another sample.
That brisket was delivered from heaven. I immediately made my order. "Nick, I want the brisket with a side of the mac & cheese, and a Hometown Heroes cup of sweet tea."
He handed me my cup and before I was able to fill it, my food was ready. He came around the counter, asked where I wanted to sit, put my tray down, and asked if I needed anything else. If I did, I didn't know it yet. I sat down and prepared to eat.
That was when I met Mark. Mark is one of the hosts and basically makes sure that everyone in the di ing room has everything they need, whether they realize they need it or not. (We'll come back to this later.
I found out rather quickly that Mark and I have a lot in common. We're about the same age, both from L.A. (lower Alabama), and both blessed with the gift of Gables. We talked for a solid 15 minutes in between me stuffing my face with some of the best smoked brisket I have ever put in my mouth. We even determined that we were both at Troy State University at about the same time in the late 80s.
I was almost fi ished when Mark asked me, "Have you ever had our blueberry cobbler?" No sir, this is my first ever visit. "OH! Well, hold on a moment." He returned with a full bowl of said cobbler. I'm not much of a dessert guy, plus, I was already as full as a tick, but I figured I owed it to him to give it a try. It was excellent! Alas, I couldn't eat all of it, so he gave me a lid and a bag so I could bring it home to my wife.
As I was leaving, I wanted to thank the whole crew for the fantastic experience and scrumptious food. That's when Wendy told me she would let them all know for me.
One last thought before I bring this lengthy review to a close: To the young lady behind the counter who had been crying - whatever it is you're dealing with, you got this. You are...
Read more6-14-2025 @ 745pm Ordered through the app and very easy. Pickup was super! Most places dine-in good and to-go bad… NOT HERE I was treated with excellence! I love how they double check your order and open each item’s container to display what you’re getting. No cheap short cuts or small portions here! I got the meatloaf and it was great. Coleslaw good as always and Mac like home baked. My wife got the pulled pork and it was huge! They have a sauce for every taste. I would rate this customer service as top 3 in Pensacola. Yes, that adds to MY reasons to come back👍
11/30/2024 @ 6:30pm I heard they had newly opened up in Pensacola and I could not wait to eat here. Last time I had M-BBQ was when I lived in Panama City 2019. So glad they came here. Tonight I was greeted by Nick as I came in the door. He quickly took my name and to-go order. In less than 6-7min. I was on my way home with delicious bbq. My wife’s order was the pull pork with Mac and baked beans. She remembered and remarked they always have the best baked beans. I ordered the jalapeno & cheese sausage my old fav from Panama City and Mac with slaw. I tried the Tupelo-honey which was good however the best is the smoke mountain sauce 🫠 We also got the Wreaths across America cups 👍❤️. Everything was just as desired and excellent. Slaw was better than most with creamy dressing and the Mac was not some poured out mixture from a pan;; it is actually baked and then scooped into the container. Packed in the container I might add. No shorting on portions here folks. If there was no negative it would have been the cornbread… not a fan of it. Needs something to help moisten or kick it up - that’s just me. Mission BBQ has upset the scales for BBQ in Pensacola and I thank...
Read moreFirst visit to Mission. Walked in right at opening and was greeted the intoxicating aroma of smoked meat along with with warm smiles, hellos, and friendly personalities. Ordered the 2 meat combo with brisket and pulled pork. Added the 2 side combo with creamed corn and cheesey potatoes. We finished off the order with the caramel bread pudding. The first impression was how friendly everyone is here. 2 in particular are Jullian and Tammy. They passed by the table several times asking how we were and if we needed anything. Several samples made the way around the restaurant as well, giving all a chance to try something different. The brisket was the stand out to the plate. The bark was excellent and the slices were pull apart tender. Will certainly order the brisket again. The pulled pork was a tad on the dry side. I would have maybe preferred a sliced or chopped. The sides were tasty as well. The caramel bread pudding alone is worth a trip here. All together it was an enjoyable meal/experience. We will certainly return. As I am writing this review, the clock hit 12 pm, and the entire restaurant stopped as it announced that at 12 everyday the national Anthem is played. The whole restaurant, patrons and staff stood, hats removed and hands on hearts. We all sang the Anthem in unison and it...
