A little slice of Paris in Petersburg!

I am hesitant to write this review, because as it stands, the chocolate croissants have already begun to sell out. However, it’s for the greater good that I do share, as the croissants are really that good - they must be shared with the world at large.

I was referred to this bakery by a family member and was surprised at their fleeting hours (Saturday and Sunday mornings) and diminutive location. The interior of the shop was quirky and quaint, with old-world charm that nodded it to its historic Petersburg location.

Guests lounged at antique tables, while wooden and glass cases housed the pastries - our favorite of which included the Boston crème cruffin, the strawberry tart, and my favorite, the legendary pain au chocolate. At the risk of sounding snobbish, I have had the privilege of eating fresh pastries in Paris, and am not easily impressed.

These pastries were impressive. Bittersweet, glossy chocolate, thick custard crème, fresh mint garnish and the croissant itself - airy, flaky layers, with a crisp, crackling crust, and a congealed buttery underlayer that was a delight to bite into. Delicious. I devoured one and immediately craved another.

The other pastries were pleasant, the chai latte was just alright, but nothing could compare to the chocolate croissant. I really do believe it’s the best on the menu, and perhaps one of the best in this area. Get there early, if you can, and snag a croissant or two, before strolling by the nearby farmer’s market for an almost Parisian...

Our order included a quiche lorraine to be warmed and a breakfast sammie. I submitted my feedback on the text app that my sandwich was missing the cheese, the quiche lorraine was overly warmed, and we didn't receive our entire to-go order before we left.

The response: Hello , this is Claudia the bakery owner and baker . I find hard to believe that your sandwich didn’t have cheese on it, my cook is used to add the cheese unless otherwise is requested.

And Dionne one of my FOH staff lady , when to look for you inside , outside of the bakery with your quiche , the one you requested to be heated up . You left the bakery for who knows what the reason was while your quiche was still in the oven .

The heated up process doesn’t happen in less than 3 minutos , we do not used microwave oven.

And so far no one customer has ever complained to be overly heated, the food is heated thinking on time that we served, and time that it will Take to be eaten.

I honestly I don’t see the point of your complaint

Claudia Glazier

I replied: The point of my complaint is to tell you my sandwich didn't have cheese and we didn't receive our entire order. We left because we were handed our bag with what we thought had our entire order. When I returned and I approached the door, someone was coming outside with a box. I asked if it was the quiche lorraine, she said yes, I took the box and left.

I will no longer spend...

I just recently learned of this establishment so I have only been there twice. The food is wonderful and the people are friendly, but both times they have had trouble getting my order correct. The first time I only ordered items out of the case, and there were a few I had to remind the person that I had ordered. This second time there were a few more difficulties. I went right at opening, and I was ordering several items from both the case and kitchen so I wrote them down to make it easier. After ordering, I was informed the biscuits for the biscuit sandwiches I ordered wouldn't be ready for an hour (not sure why they wouldn't have items on their menu available at opening), so I said I would wait (I assumed they would bring all sandwiches out at the same time). A few minutes later they brought out my brioche sandwiches, so I asked if I could just change the others to brioche as well, since I didn't want those sitting there for an hour while I waited on the biscuits. After receiving the additional sandwiches, I checked the order when I went to my car and found there were only two sandwiches total. When I went back in I found out they had only rung me up for two sandwiches- I had written it down and given the list to the cashier so I am not sure how I could have made it any easier. Great food, but be sure to check your order because based on my experience your order will probably have...

Our family first fell in love with Buttery Baking House when they were a start-up stand at the Williamsburg Farmer's Market. In no time, we realized that we were not the only ones who had discovered this hidden gem. Week by week, the line grew - so much so that the market kept having to relocate them to accommodate the crowds. It is THAT good. Now they have a thoroughly charming storefront in Petersburg that got so popular that they had to quickly expand into the next-door space. Claudia's concoctions are incomparable to anything else and - if you are not lucky enough to live in Petersburg - it is well worth the drive. Favorite: mushroom tart and cheese danishes
