On entry, with two other black women, we were ignored, seated ourselves at the empty counter, fetched and analyzed the menu, commented to each other about still having not been acknowledged and started the 60 second countdown until we would get up to leave.

The woman behind the counter, taking our order, would rather be doing anything else in the world and had the attitude of a 14 year old teenager being made to cater to her parents friends at bridge night, but since she was being paid to provide service to people wanting to spend their money in a place of business, she was well overdue for the "fix your face" talking to. She was less then helpful in any and every way a "service professional" could be. From providing zero clarification on menu offerings to some inaudible utterance at the request of a Wi-Fi password, and our constant need to seek out service when needing to order, order more, request the check AND pay it, the work would have been better done by a marker hanging from a string on a white board or an iPad with square.

Words used to describe the vibe include hostile, dismissive, disrespectful, disengaged and in general disappointing. The irony of being three black women being ignored by a group of whites at a lunch counter wasn't lost on anyone.

The...

Now, I'm only giving this a 1 star due to the delivery service guy I just encountered. First, Barry's food is always really good and fast delivery -- but I think its safe to say that my delivery guy was having a bad day. Barry's guys don't call before they arrive at your door, instead they knock as loud as they can to alert you when they are at the door... suppose your are tending to your child, using the rest room, or your room is located on the top floor in your house.. completely unacceptable.

Secondly, the driver is angry once a tip was not applied to the order... Now... I get it, tipping is the right thing to do, I used to be a server and I understand how much of a difference tips make. But again, this is no reason to throw a hissy fit because you didn't receive one this time. I really didn't appreciate that as a customer.

The driver then snatched the signed receipt and forgot my drink I ordered, he then goes over to his car to retrieve the "missing" drink nonchalantly hands me the drink & then goes to his car.. slams his door & goes his way.

Barry's your food is good, but your driver attitude is horrible.. No tip today.. but you'll make...

I called to place an order & I should have known at that point this place was not for me. The guy taking the order repeated my order back to me twice incorrectly after letting me know they had run out of regular rolls & only had the mini's. I walked in the establishment while my food was being prepared after being told they would be ready in 10 minutes, to find a guy making my hoagie stop & answer the phone with the same gloves on that he was handling food. Then going back to making a chicken Parm sandwich. Taking the chicken tenders out of the roll & placing them on same counter he was preparing the hoagies on to add provolone cheese. Picked them up placing them back into the roll. They were under staffed & unorganized. You would think that after seeing all of that I would have left them right there. Luckily mine fell on the ground before I possibly could have gotten sick. If your going here you might as well go to Liberty gas station in uptown. The bread was soft & they made my hoagie as I requested. NEVER AGAIN.... DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!!!! $31 for two regular hoagies & a...

(April 2021 visit) Was wandering around Roxborough last night (as you do) and tried the often suggested Barry's as a "better than Delos" alternative. In car dining for freshest 1st impression. Steak was seasoned well with medium chop, good cheese (American - no Cooper on offer) to meat ratio and al dente onions which added a nice sweet pop. The roll sadly was a miss IMHO - fresh wasn't the issue but softness was. It held together but was squishy, lacked a bit of mouth feel compared to the heavy hitters. Would I eat there again, probably but not out of may way worthy. Will say, for being an older joint, the operation is tight and clean. Articulate on the phone when taking your order and friendly customer service at the counter. Young staff on at the time covering all posts and all had the hustle going on - no smartphone slouches making the job 2nd priority. Restores some faith for our future. This alone will sway me towards here the next I'm in the area.

Local friends have been talking about Barry's as a bit of a lesser known secret to get cheesesteaks. I finally gave it a try and have been twice so far. First time, the Alpine: steak with Swiss cheese and a brown gravy. It was ok, flavor was good, a little short on the gravy with could have used a little more seasoning/salt (just my opinion.) We got a bunch of sides. Second time, I went for a more traditional steak: fried onions, peppers, American cheese, and ketchup. Very solid! Onions and peppers were fried up just right adding a bit of sweetness. I also got the chicken tenders which were really good, plus split a side of mozzarella sticks (5 per order is a little skimpy), and fries (they're like a steak fry, large size side, and just enough salt for me.) Definitely will be sharing the recommendation to get a steak from here.
