The last 2 weeks in August I feel are a great time to check out eateries that have been on your mind but may be overly crowded the rest of the year. A sunny 84 degree Saturday in Chestnut Hill was the perfect backdrop for walking the cobblestone lined stretch of Germantown Avenue and checking out posh shops and great eateries like Tavern on the Hill. Shawn was behind the bar and greeted us warmly. There were only 2 other patrons in the establishment that were on their way out. The cool dimly lit interior was a welcomed contrast from the sunny summer day. We were escorted to our table by a nice gentleman (I'm sorry, I do not remember his name) who pointed out the specials on the board. One of those specials was the Southwestern Soup (pictured)...absolutely delightful! We also ordered a cheesesteak w/provolone (lol that person isn't from Philly), Buffalo wings and coconut shrimp. Everyone really njoyed their food. I would definitely recommend paying this quaint Tavern a visit.

Very nice place. Very good cheesesteak. They don't kill you on the price. But this cheesesteak was oily. Very nice bar. Nice heavy wood decor. I guess it's what you would expect for Chestnut Hill. But not a killer Chestnut Hill price. I really want to love this cheesesteak but it was oily. The bartender said they have a pepper medley / concoction so I got it on my cheesesteak. I assume the oil came from that. The roll was good and it held together nicely. The meat was a nice thicker slice and more of a shred than a chop and it’s flavor came through in a very flavorful cheesesteak. The pepper medley/concoction was very flavorful, nice big thick chunks like I like but where the heck did all that oil come from. I went with provolone cheese and I'm really glad. This cheesesteak needed a heavy cheese. I am pretty sure I had a very good experience but where did all that darn oil come from.

We always have a good experience when we stop in here. The staff is always friendly, the pub has an old-school intimate vibe. The building is older and things like the bathroom faucets could use some attention, but we really like 'true pub' style. The menu has a good variety and the specials have been interesting and delicious. All of the soups are highly recommend, Everything is priced reasonably but we always make sure to budget for an appetizer and a drink or two at least, we usually end up tempted and order something extra we weren't planning on.

This since my first visit over 30 years ago, always offers a simple yet elegant experience. You enter off the busy avenue of shops and close by eateries to quiet, calm friendly atmosphere with jazz playing softly, exquisite service, great tasty fresh made food and superb spirits of drink. In summer cool and winter a warm crackling no invasive fireplace. Service, professional and friendly with smiling pleasure. Easily priced and just perfect!! I had a great Afternoon today as I have always.

10/20/2024 Drove down to Chestnut Hill specifically looking for quick but good lunch with sister and they did not disappoint. Was not crowded at all. Slow start to get response from wait staff once seated but once done(John) everything was as I expected. Shawn ended up assisting and all was warm, friendly and efficient. I had the Cajun chicken sandwich and fries with a Coors lite. Sister had the cheese tortellini shrimp special with a draft 🍺 beer. Food came quickly and hot. Most delicious. As always the jazz was flowing with Eagles(winning) on TV in bar. It's always still cozy and I left feeling very satisfied. Love this place. It's been here since I was very young and stands test of time. Appreciate it's being here continuing the best traditions of Chestnut Hill with so many...

Help run an outdoor/adventure club. We hike every Wednesday and always go out afterwards for food/drinks. Went out of my way this week to find a spot in Chestnut Hill for us to gather, since we normally don't go there and since a lot of places close at 9pm. Showed up, and lone bartender was clueless about our reservation. Had first spoke to someone weeks ago on the phone (we weren't looking for any special treatment - just order off the menu and possibly to sit together if they could accommodate us). Bartender managed to get person on the phone I contacted and even had a phone conversation with and they were surprised we showed up because I didn't call them a second damn time despite me emailing them two days ago that I'd be bringing 10-15 people. Sign out front also says "new summer hours" to 10pm and they were closing when we walked in at 8:50pm. Like - okay - not exactly dropping 15k but why do so many places today not want to make money? Knew it was a problem when person insisted on a phone call after first contact. Like I'm not asking for a wedding or funeral lunch in. Just wanted space and a "reservation" if possible. It's the 21st...

Food was good . Service was poor. I went there for dinner around 9 pm on Saturday with 2 friends The hostess was slow to seat us . The waitress was slow to approach our table and take our orders .

When we all ordered our meals the waitress asked us if we wanted to substitute fries in our dinners . Everyone substituted fries. When we got our checks , there was an additional $2.50 charge on the checks . When asked about the extra charge we were told it was for the fries. Told her that she didn't say anything about extra charge for substitution when she took the order. She smirked and said that she was just up selling our orders .

I asked her to take the extra charges off our bills. She came back and told us the charges were removed And then in her next breath, she said we would catch a lot of crap for removing the extra charges, and told us to remember that when we tipped her.

I would have tipped her extra, if not for the fact her service was poir. It took multiple requests for extra water and extra sauce...
