My husband and I just visited for the first time since the pandemic began. It was great to get a text when the table was ready so we didn't have to stand in line outside in triple digit heat (like the old days)! We were there to celebrate our one year wedding anniversary.
The food was good, but it's not my favorite Phoenix restaurant anymore. The carnitas weren't as tender or juicy as they used to be and the portions feel smaller.
Last time (and it was a very long time ago, so they may have switched to this ages ago) the meat came on a huge ceramic plate/platter with the beans and rice. It was soaking in its own juices, and it was AMAZING.
This time, the carnitas came out on a sizzling iron pan, separate from the sides. There wasn't any juice left. They tasted like they sat in that pan for the entire time we waited for our food; getting all dried out. The pan was sizzling like it was fresh when it got to me, but every restaurant can make a plan sizzle by flicking water on it just before walking to a table. The carnitas also didn't come with cilantro, onions, or lime.
Despite the restaurant not being busy, we waited at our table for a very long time after ordering the food. Our chip bowl was empty but our server didn't come back by to see if we'd like more. When the plates did come out it was a surprise, because they hadn't given us the appetizer yet. We didn't complain, but it was frustrating. The appetizer took at least another ten minutes to be brought to us, and that's being generous with the estimated time.
I hoped they might do an anniversary discount since their waitlist app asks you for your anniversary date, but apparently not. That's okay, because we didn't expect one. But a little discount for the appetizer mistake and long wait time would've gone a long way towards encouraging us to try them again someday.
The margaritas still slap, that's for sure. Damn! Commodore Guadalajara does not skimp on that tequila. They're perfect.
Prices are just too steep for us to go back. We'd rather not deal with long waits in the car, disappointing service, and then long waits at the table.
Still giving them 5 stars in every respect because sometimes things just aren't perfect, and that's life. This experience was the first experience that left me feeling like I wished we'd spent our evening...
Read moreThis restaurant was recommended by several people that I know. I wanted to have lunch here last Monday, but they’re closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Today they’re open until 7:00pm; so be sure to check their hours. I arrived shortly after 6:00 and they had lines out the door. I was told a 30 minute wait, but was called by 20 minutes. I started my service ordering a Pina Colada and Sprite, and an entree of green chili beef Chimichanga with an extra side of sour cream. Chips and salsa (more like a red chili mole sauce) are complimentary. The cocktail arrived after the Sprite, and it was a good size cocktail. I’ve never had one served with whip cream before. I liked the mole sauce that had a nice spicy kick and flavor. The entree arrived on a hot platter with guacamole and an extra side of sour cream, and refried beans and rice. Love a good plate of refried beans and rice. The chimichanga was fine. I wish it had more of a crisp. Packed with beef, onions, and peppers. The meat was tender and lean, and had good flavor. It was a good sized portion that I took home the remaining half; saving room for dessert which was flan. It was a bit strange as the flan arrived with a drizzle of grenadine(?) and some loose whipped cream and a cherry. The flan was creamy and delicious, and would be better without the grenadine; just a dollop of whipped cream and a sprig of mint. The check came with a total after tax of $40.02. I’d like to try a twist of the Pina Colada. Make it with vodka instead of rum, hold the whipped cream… called a Chi Chi cocktail. This was a good dinner and worth the drive to dine at. Open to try a few...

First time there today. Came from out of town and they told us to try their chilaquiles because they are the “best in town.” We decided to go and when we arrived there was lots of people waiting and for a table for two it was 45-60 minutes wait. We decided to wait and give the place a try, since so many people is usually a good sign. Once we got seated I did not see a breakfast menu and asked our waitress if we could have one but she then told me they stopped it 30 minutes ago. My spirit was broken and even told her that there was no signs anywhere in the place stating their breakfast hours. She did not care and so we ordered food. My plate was disgusting and not to my standards being that I am from a border town and know what authentic Mexican food is. The taco was soggy from the grease and the meat was dry and tasted old. The lettuce on the dish was not all green and the Mexican rice was old as well. The only thing that was passable from that dish was the beans. Only took a bite of the taco and picked at the beans and then felt sick so I just stopped eating it. Waitress looked at the plate surprised and instead of asking if I wanted a box (which I did not!) or how the food tasted she just took the plate. So my review for regular food is horrible and the service I received was also nothing to be remembered. Definitely not coming back nor recommend this place. Perhaps breakfast is better but I don’t even want to come...
