They were recently featured in the Yelp Top 100 tacos in the USA survey a few months ago. It was on my radar, but I'd not yet tried them. I was eating elsewhere the other day, and thumbed through their copy of Bon-Appetit while I waited. I had a cover feature on the popularity, or resurgence of, Tacos. I scanned through that looking for key words Phoenix and Arizona, LOL. KISS was featured there, too! Well now, it's a MUST try.
The owner verified that the KISS is what I thought it was. The traditional acronym of Keep It Simple, Stupid. Chicken.....just chicken. There are plenty tables, and it's roomy enough so as not to feel cramped. It's also KISS in that there's no real decor, no distractions of Tv, artwork, etc. So if you dine alone, bring your phone or something to read for stimulation, LOL. A local Spanish language newspaper is available on on the counter.
The pollo is grilled, and it's not merely chopped-up, it's minced, very, very fine. You could probably chew it without teeth, LOL. The tacos are street-sized, silver-dollar style. The tostados are a bit larger. But, there was plenty of meat for the two tortillas in each serving if you peel them apart. My fave was the Flip taco. It was like a tostado in sandwhich form, with a cruncy flat tortilla on each side, and the addition of beans with the cheese and chicken.
A small, but excellent salsa bar provides the typical toppings of chopped cilantro & onion, shredded (powered) cabbage, pickled red onion, and 3 house salsas. The 'mild' is a delicious tatamada style which was JUST at my tolerance limit. The red-hot and habanero were exactly what'd you'd imagine, favorful, but..ouch. I would point out that the tacos were moist enough that you didn't need any salsa.
One of THEE standouts was the chicken slider sandwhich. It's a nice piece of tender fried breast topped with melted white cheese and a bacon-strip. Wings were healthy, but you probably want to be sure you order them with just the rub. I had to wipe-off the hot sauce from mine with napkins, just to be able to eat them LOL. Fries are really good, seasoned with seems like Lawry's salt, but I could be wrong. The rice is a simple, subtle flavor as a side. The beans, I didn't care for as much. They were charro-style, creamy, but just didn't bring the flavor matching the rest of the food.
The next time I go I will try a couple of things with the cubed, fried potatoes. Drinks are strictly canned and bottled sodas and water in a cooler. No soda fountain.
The only downside is that they close early, like 4pm...and parking is on the curb. It's...
Read moreI went for the first time today; it's tucked away with plenty of curbside parking. I had two KISS tacos and a 'flip' taco, the kiss tacos were a generous portion of flavorful chicken and a sprinkle of cheese. I added some of their excellent green salsa and thoroughly enjoyed them! The flip taco had delicious beans and more cheese than the taco had, it was excellent! When I go back, I will try the burrito and maybe a side of beans. The ladies working were very pleasant and welcoming. I love finding these kinds of friendly and...
Read moreTruly a hole in the wall, no frills, taco and chicken place. The street sized chicken tacos are packed and are incredibly tasty. They don't skimp on the meet at all, which I love. The papa (potato) taco is delicious and much better than it may sound for those who have never had papa tacos before. The chicken quesadilla is the perfect combo of chicken and cheese. Even the fries are delicious. Everything on the menu is perfectly done! Definitely one of my favorite taco places in...
