I really really want to like this place. I have been here many times because it is close to my house. But, they really need to just up their game.
1 - every time I pick up my order, something is missing. It's usually something small, like a side of sauce. But those sides aren't cheap! 2 - everything seems to be made in haste. Small things bother me, but I think they are symbolic of larger issues. Veggies aren't chopped well. Portions are weird. For example, I ordered a burrito once that included jalapenos and lettuce. There were A LOT of jalapenos, and they were chopped randomly, with no seeds or stems removed. The lettuce was sprinkled on, like it was cilantro. 3 - they really kinda skimp you with portions. For instance, the burrito comes with a small side of chips. An order of chips and salsa comes with a larger bag of chips. If you order both you don't get the small bag, you only get the larger bag. I asked about this once. The owner just smiled and said, we just add them together. No, they don't. And, really? Chips. How much could those cost? 4 - The side sauces are way overpriced. The side of guac is $3. It comes in a 2oz container! And, honestly, it isn't all that wonderful. 5 - The empanadas are very small and never really have the right flavor combinations. They are also made, fried, and wrapped in foil ahead of time. When you order one, they take the wrapped empanada and put it in the panini press for a minute or two. I always have to reheat in the toaster oven at home to get them hot in the middle and crispy again.
Again, I really want to like this place, but there are just too many corners cut and lack of attention to detail. Tonight really put me over the edge when I called to let them know that another order was missing things, and the employee on the phone got an attitude. There are definitely better options for Mexican. Oh, and like other reviewers have said...this isn't really a Mexican...
Read moreDia De Los Burritos was my latest stop on my trek to find a really good Mexican food eatery in the Gloucester County area.
The order consisted of a ground beef burrito with black beans, rice, jalapeños, cheese, cilantro lime salsa and no onions - a junior ground beef quesadilla with queso - a side of chips with guacamole and queso - an order of chips with queso.
The burrito was wrapped well and was heavy. The first thing I noticed upon taking my first bite of this $10.25 burrito was onions! I ordered no onions. As I ate through the burrito, I found very little beef, no cheese to speak of and a couple miniature pieces of the mildest jalapeño I've ever eaten. The cilantro lime salsa was served in the smallest side cup available and tasted store-bought. There was nothing Mexican tasting about the burrito. Grade: 3 of 5.
The junior beef quesadilla with queso for $8.75 was good. Authentic tasting. Very skimpy for the price. Grade: 4 of 5.
The side of chips and queso for $2.25 disappointed. Salted corn tortilla chips straight out of a bag and one of those tiny cups of queso holding enough queso for five or six chips. The flavor of the queso was kind of bland. Very overpriced. Grade: 2 of 5.
The side of chips with guacamole and queso for $3.25 also missed the mark. Store bought salted chips. A little, tiny cup of guacamole and another little cup of queso. Again nowhere near enough guacamole or queso for the chips. Overpriced. Grade: 2 of 5.
Overall, Dia De Los Burritos was better than some in Gloucester County and not as good as others. They can do better with their food to price ratio and their seasoning of the food needs to be more authentic tasting. It's worth going to if you're in the Pitman area, but not worth driving any distance for. Overall...
Read moreLong time Taco Lover, full time Hispanic here. I’ve never written a review but I’ve had many tacos in many cities in different countries, these were by far the absolute worst. The guy taking my order acted shocked when I asked to have my black beans on the side (since apparently they come with beans in the taco???) and he remarked that they taste great with the beans in them. Would probably be a valid point (outside the tradition of just not having beans in tacos, thats kind of weird) except the corn tortillas were quite literally store bought and heated incorrectly. You don’t take paisano tortillas and only put one in each taco, you double them so they don’t rip when you try to take a bite. I could’ve gotten past that if the steak in the tacos was decent, but it honestly tasted like cat food. Presentation is as important as the recipe (they were individually foil wrapped???) , but jesus christ at least throw a little seasoning in with the steak. There was some weird red sauce that had an italian marinara consitency and tasted like ketchup??? limes weren’t cut in a way that you could effectively try to squeeze a little flavor into your prison food, and they charged me $13 for those miserable justifications for colonization. And during hispanic heritage month? my ancestors are rolling in their graves. Dia de los Burritos’ most authentic quality is their name. I promise you, go anywhere else. I should’ve turned around and walked out when I didn’t see a single cuh...
