A great time overall, we arrived around 10:30pm just after having eaten a large dinner and in search of some great beers. I found the place on google maps using my cellphone and both FatHeads and Smokin' Joes were overcrowded. The modest-sized bar area here was also overcrowded and loud, but the back dining area was only about 20% capacity. However, I was told by the hostess that it was "dining only" until 11pm. I managed to convince her that we'd be ordering appetizers and desserts along with our beers and there were 5 of us so we managed to convince her to seat us.
We looked over the very interesting and rather modest-priced traditional UK-style menu items and were sad that we hadn't eaten here, instead! "Next time." My shortbread-icecream dessert was fantastic, the shortbread was the traditional Brit style and very enjoyable. The cheese and breads appetizer was great!
The on-tap beer selection had a good 2 dozen offerings that were all interesting and some were difficult to find even in the more wide-offering bars in most cities.
The server was very friendly and helpful, and drinks and various foods were brought rather quickly.
The bar was so noisy that it carried even back into the dining area, one negative point. But it was offset by the great vintage ambience and decor which hadn't been ruined by sound-decreasing drop-down ceilings which were early 20th century at latest, and worth preserving.
Overall, a great experience and we hope to...
Read moreIf this is Pittsburgh’s idea of a 4.7, you need to have your head examined.
My wife and I, along with another couple visited Pittsburgh on 11/7 for the concert at the stadium. We decided to visit Pipers Pub since we wanted some comfort food, and it had such a high rating on google. Long story short, the food was terrible and 3 of us felt sick for the rest of the night.
We came into town starving, which is the only reason we ate almost all the food. Here are some specifics. We started off by sharing a Scotch egg. Between the 4 of us we didn’t want to finish it. The egg was over cooked turning the yoke green and the sausage around the egg was undercooked and still pink. The spicy dipping sauce was not complimentary at all. We ordered some mimosas which were clearly made with concentrated OJ. The waitress really talked up the shepherds pie and the cottage pie, stating that they’re made in-house and the process takes two days. 2 of us ordered the cottage pie and the beef was absolutely dry. I guess that’s what happens when you cook it for 2 days. Not a hint of salt in the dish, literally had to salt every bite to choke it down, and hardly any mashed potatoes on top. If you’re on a low sodium diet this is the place for you!! One member of our group got a chicken sandwich and spent a lot of the evening running to the bathroom.
The only person that didn’t get sick had a burger.
Total bill was $144 plus tip....
Read moreThis place used to be one of my favorites. I used to go almost once a week. They used to have a wide-ranging menu with great choices. That is no longer the case. When covid hit they shut down which and juiced the system for $ took their customer base for granted. They did themselves a disservice by staying closed so long.. they recently reopened 3 years later. The food is different now. It's just not the same. The menu is completely different. Some of my favorites not on there anymore. I've had more than one, less than desirable experience there, especially with the owner. He gets overwhelmed and basically reverts to being a shadow. Everyone's human I get it. Just stating my opinion and how I feel about this place seemingly going down hill. I used to take family members to this place whenever they would come into town. unfortunately the standard has dropped and 3 years of not being in service probably has a lot to do with that. They put the restaurant on the shelf and relied on pub chip shop instead... I'm 100% Irish so I want nothing more than to love and support this place. But they have taken advantage of the Public's...
