Huge massive portions, because if you can't make the food well, fake it and pile it on because the silly Americans will think it's awesome. This was by far the most terrible interpretation of typical Japanese diner fare I have ever seen. Admittedly I am spoiled, because I live near three very authentic Japanese restaurants in my hometown. We took 90% of our food out in doggie bags, because we didn't feel like arguing with how bad the food was, it was thrown out. I get that you are not going to get a truly "authentic Japanese" meal in America, and I am good with that. Broccoli and mushrooms, instead of the traditional cabbage, tomato slice and Japanese potato salad, with Tonkatsu is a bold move and falls into that "fusion" category, if you can pull off the Tonkatsu. Unfortunately Godaiko did not pull off anything but making us waste time and money. I had ordered Ramen, it was the entire reason we went there after reading the reviews. The Ramen was cold, had a way undercooked entire boiled egg (???), which everyone knows should have been cut in half. The noodles were angle hair, and while there was a massive amount one bite and I was done. I didn't know whether to laugh or call for the manager and waste more time. We also ordered a simple California roll, which was also terrible, besides falling apart, whatever the "crab paste" was had turned. The sushi literally tasted like a dirty gold fish tank. Ramen, Tonkatsu and a Sushi roll with tip, $70. Never having to go back into that...
Read moreJanuary 23, 2019 Two Stars We came for dinner. It took quite a bit of time to be seated (no one was at the host area for 10-15 minutes when tables were ready and the two host/servers were in the back, and neither bar server greeted us to assure us someone would be with us). When we ordered, I asked to double check that I understood the buy one get one free special because the menu is confusing, and I got an exasperated sigh and then a yes. The food took a long time to come out, and it didn't really taste great. I've been here a few times for the lunch deal, which is a lot more reasonable in price, but the quality still wavers. Both the higher-than-average price and the lower-than-average quality drastically reduced overall value, and the service was pretty sub-par; however, we tipped on the original price as usual (rather than the BOGO price) because we understand more effort goes into serving more food and to encourage the server not to drop service just because they suspect their overall bill will be lower (which really needs to be recognized as a consequence of the establishment's promotion instead of taken as a customer's wrongdoing). I've been pretty disappointed with the value and service here after giving it multiple chances, that I don't think I will be back for a while....
Read moreI really hate having to do this. I normally love Godaiko in Ann Arbor and recommend it all the time. Our waitress was very sweet. But the experience I had yesterday leaves me questioning if I'll be back. I ordered California rolls (BOGO), which I usually love. When asked, they would not do one with cucumber and one with avocado; doesn't seem too out of reach, but the answer was no. Okay, that's fine. I was okay with it, understood, and ordered. When our food came, the waitress set my sushi plate to my left. It was not amazing but good. When I was putting my food in a box to go, I noticed a hair over a few pieces of sushi on the plate. When the waitress came to give us our check, my husband told her we had a concern, that there was a hair on my sushi. She looked perplexed and then took my plate to the back kitchen. She comes back out with my plate telling me none of the cooks in the back have dark hair. She then placed the hair on the table and said it was mine, that is was red, not black like hers. My hair is not red and all pulled up in a ponytail/clip. I also was never over the sushi plate. I was not battling it any further and am so disappointed on how it was handled. My favorite sushi place in AA that I've been going to for years, but I'm not sure I'll be back. #Bummed...
