This was the first time my wife and I ate at Der Dutchman. Everything exceeded my expectations. While the buffet looked awesome, we decided to get individual meals. My wife had the sampler with roast beef, a broasted chicken breast, green beans, mashed potatoes, dressing, a side of Beef gravy, chicken noodle soup, a side of noodles. I had the 3 piece dark broasted chicken with a baked sweet potato, and Mac and cheese. On top of that, they gave us 2 wheat and 2 white dinner rolls. We finished it off with a chocolate peanut butter pie and a coconut cream pie. To drink, my wife had unsweetened iced tea and I had sweet tea.
Our drinks came quickly. I only drank mine, since we both had tea, so I cannot say how my wife's tea was. Mine, on the other hand, was sweet and refreshing. I would almost compare it to that magical concoction of tea found in the southern states that can rarely be found here in the northern states. I think Der Dutchman is as close as you can get to the beautiful southern sweet tea.
We started with the rolls. They were warm, soft, pillowy, and tasty just as they were. The butter enhanced the flavor, of course. But then my wife suggested to try the peanut butter. That was YUMMY! I've never had a peanut butter like that. I believe they whip in marshmallow fluff into their peanut butter, making it sweeter and more rich. Then we tried the apple butter on the roll. That was delicious also. The apple flavor was not lost among the spices and sugar.
Then, my wife's soup came. It was one of the best chicken noodle soups I have ever tasted, both in restaurants and at home. There were big pieces of chicken in it, with a complex and homey broth, and perfectly done Amish noodles. I definitely recommend it.
Then our meals came. Of course I tried my wife's food first. Her roast beef was perfectly done. It was tender and juicy. The mashed potatoes were definitely real and had a wonderfully buttery potato flavor. The dressing was likewise delicious. The gravy just added to the overall bouquet of flavors. Since I had my own chicken, I decided not to taste her chicken breast at that time. The green beans were buttery and tasty. The noodles, also buttery, but with a gentle flavor that gives a comfort all of its own.
My Mac and cheese was creamy and had complex cheesy flavor. Delicious! My baked sweet potato came out just as a sweet potato cut open. There was a wee container of a brown sugar and cinnamon mixture (I believe) that you could sprinkle as much or as little as you want on the inside. I added some butter and took a taste. The flavor of the sweet potato shined through and melded with the sugar and cinnamon combination. It was tasty. Finally, I ate a thigh of my broasted chicken. The skin was perfectly done. The meat was juicy. The overall flavor made me stop and savor it in my mouth. It was excellent. Everything was excellent.
As we finished up, these huge slices of pie came out. Of course my wife and I ate some of both pies. The Chocolate Peanut Butter pie's flavor was perfectly balanced and silky, but not too rich. The Coconut pie had a wonderful profile of flavors that varied from the subtle to the sublime. The lightly toasted coconut on the meringue was a beautiful touch that added another dimension of flavor. Absolutely fantastic!
Everyone there was warm and welcoming. Our server was amazing. She was quick, attentive, and made sure our glasses were never empty. On top of that, she was a joy to talk to. Honestly, everyone was great to talk to.
At one point, my wife spilled her tea. After a customer began to help, another server stepped in to take care of the cleanup, telling us that our server was delivering food to one of her other tables. They really seem to believe in teamwork!
The bill came and it was well under what we expected. Our server informed us that our pies were free since we were celebrating our 23rd anniversary.
It was an amazing experience. Thank you to everyone at Der Dutchman on September 18th, 2023. I highly...
Read moreWe hired Der Dutchman to cater our wedding on 5/17/25. While the food was great, the service, communication, and professionalism were extremely disappointing.
On our wedding day, guests had no water — in 90-degree heat. The top tier of our wedding cake (which should’ve been saved for our anniversary) was never set aside. Staff began clearing tables and removing centerpieces at 8:30 PM, even though our sendoff wasn’t until 10 PM and guests were still seated and enjoying the evening.
We paid for a champagne toast, but no one poured the champagne. One bartender was scrambling to fill glasses alone while Der Dutchman staff stood around the buffet. Some tables didn’t even have champagne glasses, despite us ordering more than enough to be safe.
We also paid for passed appetizers during cocktail hour. Only one person was assigned to serve 140 guests, and she passed food for only about 30 minutes. Most guests didn’t get any, and we had tons of appetizers left over.
Throughout the planning process, communication was a mess. We went through three different catering managers in the year leading up to our wedding. Just one week before the event, they told us the elegant disposable dinnerware listed in our contract would now cost $3.55 per person. That was frustrating not only because it’s clearly written into their “wedding package,” but also because you can buy a pack of elegant disposables for less than $100 at Sam’s Club or Costco. After we pushed back, they agreed to honor the original contract — but then they ran out of plates at the reception, and guests had to eat cake off napkins.
We called afterward to share our concerns. The manager apologized and said he’d follow up with the team. We never heard from him again.
At the end of the day, what’s the point of having a contract if they don’t follow it? We paid in full, including a tip — assuming the staff would be properly prepared. Looking back, we should have tipped after the service we received, not before.
The food was genuinely good, and our venue and coordinator were incredible. But Der Dutchman’s catering team was disorganized, understaffed, and unprofessional. I would not recommend them for weddings or any...
Read moreFirst time visiting Der Dutchman with my husband and roommate. This place is about 45 minutes from our house and unfortunately you can't call ahead to put your name down for a table so we had to wait an additional 20 minutes upon arrival. Although there was a wait, this gave us time to check out the gift shop. 🛍 The layout is kinda chaotic and lots of people were already inside waiting in the lobby so we had to shuffle around people to get to the shop. The gift shop has your typical items: candles, lotions, jewerly, clothing, OSU gear, and knickknacks. I bought some cherry vanilla goat lotion that smells lovely. 🍒😍 There's an upstairs to the shop but we didn't venture up there. Once our table was ready, we were given a sheet of paper to hand to the hostess to seat us. We opted to partake in the buffet so I honestly didn't even look at the menu lol. The food options were great and everything looked fresh. 🥗 We were all pleased with what we chose. After completing our meals, we went to the bakery and selected some goodies to go. I've had their desserts before so I already know the bakery items are awesome. 🥧🤤
Overall, this restaurant/building is much larger than I thought it would be. The parking lot is massive and the entrance has a nice overhang for people who get dropped off. As previously mentioned, the layout seemed a bit chaotic but that impression may have been influenced by how busy they were. I wish there was a way to put a name down for a table, especially if you're driving a distance, but at least there's things to look at during the intermittent. In short, this place is like an XL Amish Cracker Barrel. Ultimately, I'd go...
