I went to Densetsu based solely on the high ratings and it's location in Plano. I had high expectations, which were not met, but it's still a good place.
AMBIANCE The restaurant has a nice look and feel to it, and the staff are friendly.
THE FOOD Seafood Sunomono - I give them points for having it, but I was disappointed with what we were served. I am not a Japanese chef, so I can't be sure how to explain how to fix it, but I can say that the sweet vinegar flavor was too weak overall. The cucumbers overwhelmed the flavors, rather than complementing them, sort of watering it down. Slivers of cucumber (as opposed to the chunky, chopped slices) and improvements in the sweet vinegar would help.
Miso soup - fine, but that's not exactly a test.
Salad - It was literally a clump of mixed greens with some dressing drizzled on it. Given that most Japanese places serve similarly uninteresting salads, I can't really judge them too harshly for the simplicity of it. However, something about it did not work. Perhaps the dressing was a bad match.
10-piece nigiri sushi assortment - this was good; the sushi was a good variety, good quality, and well-prepared
Godzilla roll and Spicy Murphy rolls - These were two of their special rolls that consisted of a maki with a crapload of stuff stacked on top. They were both impractically huge, in terms of girth. So, you had to sort of eat the top part, then the maki, and if you weren't careful or quick to gulp down the rest, the maki would fall apart before you finished. Now that I think about it, I really did not care for either of them and I would be reluctant to order any more special rolls. The reason is that they ended up just being a giant mess of fish, roe, and sauce; it was almost a waste of good sushi, because most of the individual flavors were smothered and they were not replaced a wondrous new combo flavor like some Captain Planet of taste.
They had no futomaki (per the menu and the waiter) - that was disappointing.
THE SERVICE Service is inconsistent. During rushes, it is very spotty (worse than we would expect, especially for such a small restaurant). Service at the sushi bar is fine, but it is hard for that not to be the case.
CONCLUSION If you are a fan of Japanese food and stick to nigiri sushi, you may be very happy here. If you just like lots of food to shove in your pie hole and the idea of maki, then the special rolls may make you very happy.
It's definitely good, but, I can't say it's the best, so four stars it is.
I would still favor Sushi Sakana, Sushi Robata, and Tei Tei Robata over this place,...
Read moreProbably the best sushi place around now that Sake2Me is gone. While the place is not All You Can Eat, Densetsu is unique in that their rolls are giant (about 3 or 4 times the width of the sushi rolls we are used to).
Fish quality is always good, has never disappointed me when it came to freshness or size of slices. They are generous here! Rolls are beautiful, never sloppily made and always plated neatly.
My personal favourite and suggestion is the Jay's Favourite Roll. It is a spicy tuna roll topped with crispy onions, tomatoes, avacado, and diced salmon, then drizzled with the typical eel sauce. The roll itself is warm and very savory with the spicy tuna, crispy onions, and eel sauce, while the tomatoes, avacado and salmon pieces are cool and super refreshing. This roll can be eaten by itself because it comes with its own palette cleaner.
Other rolls I liked are: Pinky Promise: if you have not tried raw scallop before, this roll is a nice start. Typically, raw scallop is not liked because of its strong "ocean" smell. The smell of the scallop in the Pinky Promise is well masked by the spicy it is mixed with. Plus its beautifully pink and a nice roll is order on a date if your partner likes scallop. Angry John Roll: the Rainbow Roll is a classic at almost every sushi place you go to. Its typically a California Roll topped with a "rainbow" assortment of different fish. The Angry John Roll is exactly that only the California Roll is replaced with a Spicy Tuna Roll.
Staff here are very attentive and very nice. They take plates out of your way and even trash. It is very easy to miss when they pick it up because they are so quick about it.
The only down side is (and this is more of just a warning) the restaurant is small and due to its popularity, the place can get extremely crowded. Furthermore, there is no where to sit and wait except for outside. Definitely expect a wait time if you are going at a high traffic hour. Fortunately, its pretty easy to just wait in your car because they have an app that will text you when your...
Read moreThe food was great as it always is BUT I WILL NEVER GO BACK!! They close at 10 On Thursday (Today) we arrived at 9pm. It took them 5 minutes to seat us and another 10 to take our order. The TABLES WERE EMPTY JUST DIRTY. We ordered and waited on our rolls which got to us by 9:45. I asked the waiter about my hand roll that didn't arrive with the others and then he goes to the waitress that took our order and she missed it on the sheet and didn't place it. Now instead of him ordering it RUSH he came back and asked me did I want it. I mean WHAT DO YOU THINK?!?! I asked for it didn't I?? I told him no and just said I'll deduct it from the tip in my head. Now yes their about to close I get it but as a person who once was in the restaurant industry you don't go home when the doors lock in most places. They had us cashed out before we could take our first bite of our rolls. They turned the music off I mean they made you so uncomfortable that the guy next to our table didn't even bother finishing his food. Now my aunt who was a first timer was finishing her roll when Laurence came over to her and said "We closed at 10" at 10:15pm. ARE YOU SERIOUS??? That did it for me! I could have been very unprofessional and went off but I didn't my aunt finished her meal and we left. So due to this experience I should have left nothing as a tip but with the piss poor service the 20% trip dropped to 10% and I was already cashed out before he made his rude remark. Don't go here at 9pm on a Thursday because an hour isn't enough time for them...
