UPDATE: dropped a star for lesser value given new smaller portions and higher prices. Still great food and service but pretty big relative price hike.
UPDATE: Recently I noticed my bills at Yao Fuzi seemed higher than before so today I checked the menu and found that, indeed, prices had been raised. My lunch favorite have gone from $9 to $12 and at the same time the portions have been reduced by maybe 1/3rd. That's a pretty steep overall hike! Dinner prices are also higher than I recall although much of my patronage has been for lunch so I can't be as precise on those. Sadly, I have to re-evaluate Yao Fuzi as one of my regular lunch venues as the value no longer seems to be as comparable.
This has become a favorite and wanted to update the review.
Venue is tasteful and dimly lit, which is nice compared to so many glaringly bright places. I often go for a late lunch, so service was always prompt - now that I'm known to staff, they are especially welcoming.
The Mongolian Beef is quite tasty but my favorite has become the Shrimp Kung Pao. I like the sauce and it goes well with the accompanying broccoli. The orange beef is said to be lightly breaded but guess my eyes and taste buds might be getting old since I don't detect the breading. That is fine though, as I find the preparation quite tasty. On one visit my grandson said he likes orange chicken but didn't see it on the menu and they prepared it for him anyway; it was good enough that he very reluctantly shared a small piece. (He always enjoys when he gets an off-menu selection. The staff treated him like visiting royalty.)
The chili's used are modest in heat and not that edible, being a bit dry which is fine for flavoring but I don't find then enjoyable for eating.
The hot and sour soup is OK but not as good as a number of other local options. The hot aspect is on the weak side but I'm guessing that's the safe approach in this market. The egg drop soup is good too. But I now normally have the included (with lunch) salad instead and do like the dressing used.
Pleased to find Tsing Tao prominent on the beer offerings. Surprising how many Chinese places don't carry it.
The cost for a lunch sized portion is quite reasonable. Many of the specialties don't seem available in lunch portions which is unfortunate. Dinner portions are only slightly larger and more expensive and soup and salad...
Read moreMy family and I have been loyal customers of Yao Fuzi for years, as we dine at the establishment at least 1-2 times a week. Yet tonight, I faced the RUDEST and most UNPROFESSIONAL employee I have ever dealt with (whose name the restaurant refused to tell me when I called and asked).
I called to place a takeout order and was put on hold by the rude woman, for over FIVE minutes. I disconnected and called again and placed my order. When I arrived to the restaurant, I paid for my order and was handed one of two bags on the front table. The woman was “too busy” to show me which bags were mine, so I ended up accidentally grabbing my bag and another that wasn’t mine.
When I arrived home, I IMMEDIATELY noticed that the additional bag was for “Britney”, so I called the restaurant, let them know that the bag was with me, and that they should send someone to retrieve it. The rude woman, claimed I had to return the bag immediately or that she would charge my card for “Britney’s” dinner. I simply informed her, that I was at home eating dinner with my family, and that I would not return to the restaurant. The rude woman continued to YELL and THREATEN me over the phone, to which I again replied that she should send someone to pick the food up. After 5-10 minutes on the phone, she finally agreed to send someone.
But as I waited 30 minutes for someone to pick up the food, it dawned on me that they were planning on SERVING this food to someone. Personally, I am aware that I didn’t OPEN, TOUCH, or TAMPER WITH THE FOOD; but the restaurant doesn’t know that, and “Britney” certainly doesn’t know that. The rude woman’s handling of the incident resulted in an UNSANITARY situation, that I’m sure VIOLATES more than one HEALTH CODE or regulation. I just hope this isn’t a mistake that happens often, and I hope that it has never occurred with the food that I have consumed either at or picked up from the restaurant over the years.
But more importantly, having been someone who dines out multiple times a week, and whose family owns and manages several restaurants in DFW, I can tell you that customer service IS EVERYTHING. And the level of DISRESPECT, RUDENESS, and APPALLING LANGUAGE I heard from that RUDE woman tonight is unbelievable. I hope the restaurant informs this woman of the proper way to communicate...
Read moreThis was my very first visit to this establishment. PB has been here before several years ago and told me that it’s fancy and food was good. My hair was messy, bc it’s been raining and yucky and have been running errands since the morning. We were seated right away by a nice hostess lady. Our server(older Chinese woman with a short hair)was very short and abrupt kept coming back every few seconds to take our order when in fact I hadn’t had time to look over the menu. She was very impatient even after I told her this was my first time coming here. When we decided to order and I told her I wanted Za Jiang noodles, but didn’t want pork, she said pork was already in a sauce. I didnt even want to ask her if I could have it with different sauce with no meat, bc I knew she wasn’t even going to accommodate me. I told her PB wants a big bowl of egg drop soup and she said “we don’t do that!”. She said it’s small or medium and comes with a meal, so we got 2 medium and I gave him mine. We ordered shrimp and crab fried rice. My crab fried rice was decent, but PB’s shrimp fried rice was bland, 4 shrimp and lots of peas and carrots and he didn’t like it. He put soy sauce on his fried rice like the White guy from the movie, Joy Luck Club, but it still was bland. How do you mess up shrimp fried rice in this fancy, expensive Chinese eatery? The impatient lady didn’t serve us anymore and we got another one. She looked poisoned each time he asked for Coke. I got hot sauce from a nice male server and the hot oil was very hot! The only nice thing the female server did was to put my food in a container. No smile, nothing. I felt that those 2 female servers were very snobbish towards us from the beginning and I don’t appreciate to be treated in a such way, especially this is a so-called high end Chinese restaurant. I find their behavior to be very unprofessional and unpleasant. They were very unfriendly and unwelcome and I really didn’t enjoy the dining experience because of them. Besides that, I’m glad I got to experience how they treated us with snobbery, so we know not to return. We will continue to go to Zhang’s Asian Bistro Kitchen where we’re welcome, staff/owner are nice and food...
