Best Szechuan in Twin Cities! This place is truly a hidden gem, run by masters. The owner comes from a popular Szechuan place in Minneapolis and she struck out on her own to take over a failing takeout joint in a strip mall. And thank goodness!
The menu is full of authentic Szechuan specialties. On this visit we tried:
Bamboo shoots in chili oil (cold salad with scallions - fresh, crunchy and wonderful) Juicy buns (classic soup dumplings done right) Dan-dan noodles (perfectly prepared top to bottom) Boiled fish Szechuan style (the oily broth was rich and delicious, with tons of cabbage, sprouts and tofu to make a wonderfully balanced dish) Cumin lamb (velvety and deeply flavorful, contrasted with crunchy shredded lettuce). Eggplant stir-fried with garlic and pork (drop-dead delicious)
I cannot wait to go back and dive deeper into the menu.
Service was super sweet and friendly, food came out plenty fast and perfectly prepared, dish after incredible dish.
They also have the classic Hunan dishes that the American palate is more familiar with, and I'm sure they do a great job with those items, but if you crave amazing Szechuan, this is it. If you are a fan of Teahouse, Szechuan Spice, Grand Szechuan, etc., this will be your new favorite.
It's small with only a handful of tables but super clean and freshly painted, simple but pleasant decor - great for dining in or take out.
FINDING IT: Remember that I called it a hidden gem? It actually is - the old "#1" sign still hangs on the facade of the strip mall above their storefront, only a small sign on the door says, "Hua Yang" - embrace the adventure and seek it out - if you know what good Szechuan food is, you'll...
Read moreSome of the best authentic Asian food I have enjoyed since Emily and Peters place called Hunan in Bloomington. This is not your industrially prepared and prepackaged "Chinese Food" that is most often served here in Twin Cities. And if love that prepackaged buffet food, I understand. My husband loves it too. But I am aware of good food and I won't eat it. I ordered the crispy beef medium spice. It was delicious. I have never had it before. Medium spice is very spicy to me. You may want to go mild spice. We also ordered crispy green beans. Very fresh and crunchy. The fried pork dumplings tasted home made. The pork wasn't filled with cabbage and onion. It was seasoned and delicious. The dumpling wrapper was the thicker kind which I usually dont like. But after you swallow you get the taste of home made bread! Lastly we tried some flat noodles. Maybe Chao Fun? The combo with everything. At first it seemed heavy on fish sauce. But later the flavors all blended and it was fabulous I recommend this restaurant and I hope you enjoy it. But remember that it doesn't taste like Chinese Buffet. ...
Read moreI tried Hua Yang for the first time today (11/22/2020) and can't say anything positive. The 2 workers visible to the customer were not wearing masks and I felt extremely uncomfortable getting my food from them during a pandemic while a mask mandate is in place. BUT THEN when we got home (after spending $45 on food) it wasn't worth eating. My favorite food is literally cream cheese wantons and I didn't eat 1/2 of them because it had barely any cream cheese, was flavorless, and just bad. The dipping sauce was gross, I don't even want to think about it. The lo mein was edible and generic like a food court in the mall. The sesame chicken and the general tso's tasted like they had the same sauce and tasted burnt... it was dry and leathery too. My honey had a tummy ache after eating. We both agree that this was hands down the worst Chinese food we've ever had. What a...
