Spikes is located right in the Point Pleasant area.....about 5 minutes down the road. My Mother used to go here with my Father back in the 70s and 80s. As a place that's been open since 1926 it says something. I really love the pseudo hole-in-the- wall feel of it. Places that are a little rough around the edges and have been in business a long time resonate with me....they have character, history, a feel that only comes from the passage of time and generations of customers. It was myself and my almost 8 year old daughter. She has an affinity for supermarket seafood, so I wanted to get her into some "legit" stuff other than popcorn shrimp, fish sticks, etc. It doesn't get more legit than Spikes. We ordered clams Oreganato, mini crab cakes, and a special that was shrimp stuffed with crab, with rice in a lemon butter sauce. Everything was very good. The clams had a bit more seasoning/breading than I would have liked, but I'm splitting hairs. The mini crab cakes were excellent. And the shrimp/crab special was.....special. Really great flavors. Spikes is our place....I'm not interested in experimenting with other seafood places down. It's a little joint, literally right next to the water, brimming with charm and history. When people want to know "where do the locals go?".......this is it.

Seems like a popular local place. It was very busy when we went and certainly they have a lot of fresh seafood. A few bar seats too for singles and couples. Server was meh, but hostess and busser very sweet. Mussels were fantastic. Steamed clams and chowder were good. I've had better New England chowder even in Florida, but no real complaints. My complaint is the lobster roll. I thought it would be Maine style but it was served plain in a Sabrett style hot dog bun with hot butter on the side (I guess this is called Connecticut style?). It was also on the menu for $15 but they charged me $21; perhaps I saw a lunch price even though it was dinner time? It was served with very mediocre potato salad and cold slaw, both of which I've had much better versions of. It was very disappointing and a waste of money. I don't recommend it at all. Maybe the server could have asked what style I want or at least tell me what was coming??? But she seemed completely uninterested in customer service. Not sure I'll be back after that experience. Overall this place is a bit pricey for the amount of product they are moving, but a busy seafood place pulling in tourists is expected to be I guess... Don't expect any deals here.

To whomever reads this, and relays the information to this company- I went out for dinner here last night for the first time, and had quite the negative experience. I was greeted by an older gentleman that got my name on the waitlist for a party of 4. We got seated pretty quickly, and I was really excited as this came recommended from friends that lived in the area. The menu is pretty straight forward and tasty. We ordered some crab legs, oysters, clams and such. The food was good, but this review will not be about that. While I didn’t catch the name of my server, her exceptionally rude service will forever stand out as one of the worst in my dining history. I would like to mention that I do work in this industry, and I know what service should look like AT ANY LEVEL OF RESTAURANT. We started off ordering some clams and oysters, and when I asked for a minionette, I was met by attitude as they had none. She reluctantly offered a vinegar and moved along. Upon completing our appetizers, we were informed that she had to re-fire the clams oreganato as she had dropped them, which was also met by a snarky comment on how she didn’t think we needed them. When the second course came out, we received our crab legs and this Cajun sauce that came as an add on option. I should have known that it was going to be bad as she made a slightly disgusted face as I had initially ordered it. Had she explained herself and had me try it first, we would’ve never gotten here. I get the sauce, and it’s not to anyone’s liking upon THE FIRST TASTE. So, I kindly asked if she could take it away as we were really dissatisfied. Another snarky comment rolled through, but at that point the food was good and we were much more concerned with conversation. Upon completion of the meal, we got a check that did not reflect the update. When I asked her about the charge, she said “We can’t take something off that you ate” to which I had to remind her that we TASTED ONE and immediately asked for it to be taken back. Listen, I get it but $4 is precedent and we spent a good amount at this establishment. She reluctantly brought back the updated check and concluded with saying “congratulations, you saved $4” TO BE CLEAR, $4 makes no difference When trying to remedy a situation. I serve myself, it is totally possible to take something off if someone is not happy with it. In my experience I have never witnessed a more uncomfortable experience, and quite frankly this is not how service should be run. The goal is to have people come back, and with that attitude, you’re bound to hear more negative reviews. In the future I’ll be steering clear of this place as they clearly do not care about their...

My wife and I were looking at places we could get a great lobster roll at. This is one of the places that came up! Originally we wanted to goto Point Lobster Co, which is right next door. However Point Lobster closes the market at 7pm on a Sunday while Spike's is open much later.

They have a nice outdoor seating area, that was a little cramped for our liking so we decided to order to go. One thing that bothered me was one of the people dining came up and walked within two feet of me and my wife without wearing a mask. I get that it's tough to enforce masks while dining, but that wasn't the restuarant's fault.

We ordered a lobster roll, new england clam chowder, and jambalaya. The food was just ok. I wouldn't say it was bad, but it wasn't great.

Lobster Roll: Pros: They give you alot of meat! And it comes with butter, cole slow, and potato salad. Cons: The lobster roll wasn't anything special, but like I said it didn't taste bad. The cole slow and potato salad was just bland in my opinion. It didn't come with a lemon wedge either (this would have been nice)

Clam Chowder: Pros: The flavor was nice. It had corn and bacon, and it was pretty hearty. They gave us plenty of those oyster crackers which I love. Cons: It was more creamy than I would have liked. It just tasted like alot of cream, not alot of clam or clam flavor.

Jambalaya: Pros: Flavor was good! Cons: This would be good over rice or some bread (which I thought it would come with)

All in all, we probably won't return to Spike's, and our search for the best lobster...

A true Jersey shore seafood shack!. There is nothing like Spikes in the Hamptons or anywhere on Long Island! Spikes is one reason why my husband and I prefer the Jersey shore to Long Island and we live in NYC closer to Long Island. I have been going to Spikes since before the present owner was there. He has been there for 17 plus years. I have had sea food all over in the most popular sea food destinations in the US and Hawaii. But really there is nothing like Spike's. The secret to Spike's is Miguel. He is the executive chef not the owner. He has that special chef mojo. Miguel is the reason for the popularity and lines. If you go on a day that Miguel is not there you can taste it and that is the reason for the mixed reviews. Miguel has been there for close to 20 years longer than the present owner. It is best to go at lunch when there is no crowd or line. They stop serving lunch at 4 PM. We knew Miguel before he was married and we know his wife too who also used to work at Spikes. There is a waitress there who we have known since she was in high school and now she has 3 children. But if you know the staff like we do don't expect special treatment , everyone who goes there seems to be a regular and there is no cutting the line. There are lines even in the winter. The decor is still the same , no upgrades to The bathroom (only one bathroom) a real dive but a delicious dive. It was featured in Coastal Living magazine as one of the top seafood dives in the country. To get a taste of the true Jersey...
