I had two bad experiences at the OB Diner in one day and will not be returning. My family was in the Point Pleasant area for a memorial service and we met at the OB Diner for breakfast. The building was certainly not like I remembered it from my last visit a decade ago. I remembered the stereotypical well-kept New Jersey Diner with too large of a menu and good food. Nothing fancy, but good. The intervening decade was certainly hard on the OB Diner. The seats were ripped, the bathroom was beyond gross but the food seemed relatively edible. Considering, the ownership’s lack of concern for upkeep and cleanliness in the front of the restaurant, I wondered whether the kitchen was straight out of an episode of Kitchen Nightmares. Regardless, it was fine until I tried to pay my bill with my debit card. I knew there was money in my account but when the hostess swiped my card it came up declined. She rudely tapped her hand on the declined receipt. Upon asking her to reswipe, she tried again but the card didn’t work she gave me a look and said something under her breath. I went and got cash from my family and attempted to pay the check. She had misplaced the check in the intervening three minutes and yelled at me for hiding it. After she found the check, I paid and was on my way. I didn’t want to make a scene with my family on a somber day, so I let it go. Later in the day I checked my bank account and to my chagrin, I realized that my debit card had worked at the OB Diner and the problem was with their card scanner. In the hostess’s defense, she did reverse charges on my card but it didn’t make up for her mean, rude and disgusting demeanor while checking me out. Then the fun began…. My step-father had previously set up a meeting after our family’s memorial service with a college friend that he hadn’t seen in 50 years at you guessed it…. the OB Diner. My wife and I left for an hour for them to get reacquainted. We came back to pick my step-father up and upon leaving the diner we tried to pay for their beverages. A twenty dollar bill was handed over to the hostesses and everyone was talking so we didn’t watch what she did with the bill. The hostess then asked for money for the check and we told her that we had already given her a $20 bill. She informed us that that was impossible, she never made a mistake and ALWAYS put $20 and larger bills on top of her open drawer. A 10 minute diatribe about how she ALWAYS handled money in the same way and how dare we question her infallibility ensued. Additionally while this was happening, my wife overheard a waitress say “oh no not again” to another server. It was finally decided that it wasn’t worth disagreeing with an obviously perfect woman so we went on our way. We were outside trying to salvage the 50 year reunion when a waitress came outside and said that she found the $20 bill under the cash register. The hostess didn’t come out and apologize, so I went into the restaurant and asked if she wanted to explain her infallibility to me now. I did not yell but I did use my best teacher scolding tone and the hostess came unglued. I went back outside and she followed me outside and started yelling “who do you think you are,” “how dare you” and other things at me across the parking lot. I just started laughing at her and her handler put her leash on and brought her back inside. The OB Diner needs to control this person, or at least transfer her job function. If you read any of the reviews online, a common them is their disgusting bathrooms, so maybe she could clean them for her job. If she is an owner, then maybe it is time to pick a less customer service oriented...
Read moreDisgusted by the OB Diner's Unprofessional and Abusive Behavior My girlfriend recently experienced a traumatizing incident at the OB Diner that compelled me to share our dreadful experience. I must warn potential customers about the deplorable behavior of the owners, who not only screamed at her when she resigned but also hurled demeaning and hurtful insults. This incident was just one of many instances of verbal abuse she endured during her time there. It is disheartening to recount how the owners of the OB Diner treated my girlfriend when she made the difficult decision to quit. Instead of handling the situation professionally, they unleashed a torrent of verbal attacks, belittling her and undermining her self-worth. Their hurtful words included deeming her worthless and insinuating that she would never find employment elsewhere. This level of cruelty and disregard for an employee's wellbeing is completely inexcusable. What's even more distressing is that this incident was not isolated. Throughout her tenure at the OB Diner, my girlfriend faced an environment tainted by verbal abuse and harassment. It is utterly disconcerting that the owners perpetuated a culture where their employees were subjected to such mistreatment, causing immense emotional distress. No one should be made to feel inadequate or worthless in their workplace, especially by those in positions of authority. The owners' abhorrent behavior demonstrates a blatant lack of professionalism and a failure to uphold basic human decency. It raises serious concerns about their ability to manage and foster a safe and respectful work environment. Such toxic leadership poisons the atmosphere for both employees and customers alike, leaving an indelible stain on the OB Diner's reputation. I implore anyone considering dining at the OB Diner to think twice before supporting an establishment that tolerates and perpetuates this type of abuse. No one should be subjected to such emotional torment, especially while carrying out their professional responsibilities. It is vital for consumers to take a stand against businesses that disregard the well-being of their employees. In summary, my girlfriend's experience at the OB Diner was nothing short of traumatic. The owners' relentless verbal abuse, including their recent outburst when she quit, left her in tears and deeply shaken. I strongly advise potential customers to steer clear of this establishment until the owners address the abhorrent behavior and take tangible steps to create a safe and respectful workplace environment for their employees. I WILL NEVER STEP FOOT IN THIS PLACE...
Read moreThere is nothing redeeming about this place. We went here after the Jenkinsons aquarium with a friend who said this was a great diner with great food. I LOVE diners, and just about all diners have something for everyone and are delicious, but not this one. From the outside this place looks depressing and the inside isnt too much better. Whatever, as long as the food is good its fine. Today is Valentines day and a Sunday and when we walked in the place is completely dead, maybe 2 other tables in the place. I know this wouldnt be a hot date night spot or anything, but I would expect a diner to have maybe some regulars in the restaurant. But it was pretty dead quiet, which is a give away that something was up. The staff didnt even make an attempt to look happy to be there and our server was strange and awkward. Every interaction we had with her was bizarre. The awkwardly stared at us while we settled into the booth and waited awhile to get our drink orders. I went to use the restroom and when I came back my 5 year old was served her water in a tall glass for an adult and of course she is spilling it everywhere trying to drink out of it. To make it worse I noticed the inside of the glass was filthy. I asked the waitress for a kids cup for her, she looks confused and walks away. She doesnt return. I ended up going up to the cash register and asking for a kids cup for my daughter, which our server finally brings out but it has dirt all over the outside of it. Cool. We all ordered breakfast food which took over half an hour to come out, and wasnt very good. My fiances omelette was inedible, he goes to send it back and our server makes a huge deal about it instead of just fixing the issue. I worked as a server....when a customer sends back a dish offer to replace it or take it off the bill, you dont have to argue about it. If this was a good place to eat I would say the prices were reasonable but the quality in the food is severely lacking. The employees look absolutely miserable, I dont expect every member of staff to be walking on sunshine but they all looked sad and hated their lives, so it makes me question how this ppace treats them. I wont be coming back here, you can find better places elsewhere. Im sure from past reviews this place once was a great place to eat but that time is long...
