My first visit was a few months ago, meant as a quick lunch with a colleague who works in the area. Unfortunately, this was not a quick lunch. We had to wait several minutes just to be seated, even though the place was empty at noon on a weekday, not sure why. We were finally seated and left with waters and two sticky gross menus. I was kind of impressed by the menu items and everything looked to be tasty. While catching up on life with my colleague, I kept feeling like we had been left for dead by the wait staff. After what felt like almost my entire lunch break, they took our orders. My colleague swore by the fried chicken sandwich, but I went with the Rueben since it is my favorite sandwich. The $14 price was a bit alarming, but I decided to wait for the final product before judging. It came out with about 10 soggy French Fries and was not $14 size. It tasted ok, not the best Rueben, not the worse. I had to take half my sandwich to go because we had to wait so long to get it, I didn't even have time to eat the whole thing. I said goodbye to my colleague and Home-Made Café thinking I probably would have been upset if I hadn't just enjoyed the conversation and catching up.
Flash forward to this afternoon. I was on my lunch break and decided to come in alone because when I go to lunch now, I try to have healthy alternatives and I remember seeing some salads on the menu. As before, for some odd reason I stood in the front entrance for quite some time before ever being greeted or seated even though the place was a ghost town again. I was seated by a young man and again given some water and a sticky menu and started to feel déjà vu. As I was looking around to see what they changed in The Matrix, I decided on the tuna salad. After waiting yet again for literally (I timed this) 20 minutes of me coughing, clearing my throat, looking around corners and trying to make eye contact with someone, a young lady came out. She quickly took my order and rushed off. A short time later (it's a salad after all) for the second and last time I would see the young lady who was my server, she dropped off the dish and scurried off. When I got my food, it was visually.... visual. I can't exactly explain what my eyes were seeing. A very elaborately presented salad with cucumber slices arranged around the outside and what I can only guess is something like paprika sprinkled all around. I think this is meant to appeal to women who think things are "pretty", but it had no culinary effect on my senses and was unnecessary. Based on past experiences, places that sell basic food (i.e. sandwiches, salads) that spend a bit too much time on a fanciful presentation are usually trying to make up for zero flavor. This place is no different. I dove in because I was ravenous and because I was once again franticly trying to eat before I had to get to work now that I've spent more than half my lunch just waiting. The tuna salad was ok, but boring. Nothing exciting about the tuna, lots of lettuce, some spinach and not much else. I didn't touch the cucumbers arranged around the side because of the way they were cut, I knew they'd be dry with rubbery skin. As I made it about to the middle of the salad, I saw something brown that almost looked like a slice of lunch meat. After about 30 seconds I realized it was a piece of brown paper. Something like those cheap brown paper towels you see in public restrooms, or perhaps even overpriced Café kitchens? I immediately pushed the plate away. I then proceeded to spend another 20 minutes doing the cough, throat clearing, eye contact attempting dance I did when I arrived. The fellow who sat me brought over the tablet and I pointed to him that there was paper in my salad. He half-heartedly apologized. I explained again that it was like inside of my salad and it looks like a paper towel or something. Once more, I got a weak, awkward and forced apology. Then, as if he was doing me a favor, he let me know he'd be discounting my $13 salad to $11 even though I only ate half. He took the plate, apologized...
Read moreI live next door to Holy Water. The owners of this business bring their dogs on occasions when they're closed. On 8/12 around 6:40PM our dogs got into a fence fight and my dog got a fractured jaw and severe injury to her nose. I was outside with my dogs in my yard. Their dog barked at my dogs and my dogs ran over to the fence. It only lasted a few seconds because I yelled "HEY!" When my dog turned around her nose was bloody. I'm a veterinary assistant so I called the vet I work for. She met me at the (closed)clinic to avoid emergency fees. In the 15 min it took me to get there my dog was nearly drowning in her own blood. About 10 min of trying to stop the bleeding at the clinic, she vomited at least a cup of blood. All total we were at the clinic for 2 hours treating my dogs injuries. On 8/13 around noon(I think) I went to speak with the owners. I asked the first employee I saw if I could please speak to the owners of the dogs that were there the day before. She didn't know so she got her manager who first said she owned the dogs. I was very pleasant and made it very clear that I wasn't mad at all and that it was no one's fault, just that it happened and my dog got pretty severely injured. I informed her that I'm a vet assistant so the bill was already very discounted, but that I'm still just a "broke ass vet assistant" and maybe just half of the bill, since no one was at fault. If not that, maybe just give my kids and I a dinner instead. She told me the dogs were trained not to react, and sorry that happened and that she would talk to the owners(of the business) because they own the dogs. I said ok, thank you and left without making a scene. I waited hoping the owners would reach out to me somehow. I'm just next door after all. On 8/19, I still hadn't seen or heard from them so when I heard the guy out there working I went to talk to him. I walked up pleasant and smiling and said, "Hey, how's it going? Did your manager get a chance to talk to you about the dogs?" he almost immediately got defensive and asked for pictures, which I obliged and explained that I'm not mad and no one is at fault. Then he proceeded to tell me how he doesn't think his dogs did that because his big dog lives with little dogs so he doesn't hurt them. When I explained to him that I was out there with my dogs when it happened and told him exactly what happened from my side of the fence he said, "Don't come at me" and started saying something about how I went in there when they were busy and started yelling and begging for food, and how he has 4 employees saying that's what happened. I told him that is absolutely not what happened. Then he asked if I was calling his employees liars. He informed me that he has cameras and I told him I'd love to see that video. He said that's fine and something about a lawyer and "it's on" and walked off. My teen kids helped in the aftermath of the fence fight, and were witness to the interaction on 8/13. Both of them almost fainted from all the blood and were traumatized by the...
Read moreWe walked in around noon on a Sunday. They were VERY understaffed. There were two groups in front of us. They do not have a formal wait list, it’s just first come, first to sit. We were fine waiting and took a seat in their “purgatory.” The two groups in front of us were seated once tables were open. The waitress knew we were next. Another couple walked in and instead of waiting like us, just sat down at the bar in the corner where there was only 1 seat visible (we later learned there was actually two seats one was just a normal bar stool). We were a little ups did t say anything to this couple who cut in front and clearly knew we were next to be seated. We brushed it off and then eventually sat at the bar once another couple finished their meal. After sitting down, we figured the waitress would just take our order first since we actually were the next people in line, but she ignored us and took the “cutters” orders. She eventually got to us and took our drink order. She then took another 20 minutes to get us our drinks (a coffee and a mimosa). After we got our drinks we figured she would take our order. She didn’t. Because they were so understaffed, we sat and tried to be patient. The menu isn’t crazy long so we knew pretty quickly what we wanted. After another 20 minutes, we finally had to ask the waitress if we could order. She helped seat another table and get them settled while the younger waitress said she would take our order. The food came out in a normal time. My husband ordered the French toast meal and while we knew it was “small plates” we didn’t expect only 1 piece of standard bread cut in half as the main dish. I had the eggs Benedict and it was just okay. The hollandaise was underwhelming and one of my eggs was over cooked a bit. We honestly ate as quickly as we could and tried to get out because the experience was not great. It’s a cool concept of a restaurant but lots of kinks to sort through and just not worth the long wait, bad service, and mediocre food. Probably...
