CONTAMINATED FOOD!
Flies were in our food. Look, nobodies perfect and it happens in restaurants from time to time, but how they handled it was the most unprofessional I've seen. The rudeness we experienced after discovering insects in our food exacerbated a situation from disappointing to irreparable.
So, I discovered a fly in the soup and pointed it out to them. Their solution? A bigger bowl of fly soup, no charge. Now understand, they don't prepare this by bowl, it's served from a big pot. So instead of dumping out the contaminated soup their solution is another bowl of fly soup. They then continued to serve it to other customers. Yes, I'm serious.
Disgusted, I didn't want to eat anything from there after that. We'd had two bites of our appetizers (gyoza/eggrolls) before that turned our stomachs. The appetizers weren't good anyhow, but after watching them continue to serve people the fly soup I couldn't take another bite. In fact these reviews seem fake (likely friends and staff) because the interaction I had with the manager, afterwards... her attitude was that of somebody who thinks themselves to be untouchable. In fact it was jaw-dropping.
After pointing out the flies, we were treated like it was our fault they served unclean food. I think the owners are an older Asian couple as they were staring at us from behind the sushi bar. After the ridiculous solution I told the server, we're good, please cancel our orders ( and appetizers are mostly untouched, we haven't even sipped drinks). The server then brings the check and we've been fully charged for everything. Then she says "hold on," and brings a new check with 1 of 2 fly soups removed despite me and my fiancé's soup coming from the same pot.
I come from a family of chefs and restaurateurs. I've NEVER seen as poor a response to pests being found in a someone's food. Meal should have been comped and we weren't even asking for that (as we were grossed out and didn't want to eat there), but instead of refunding us when we've barely touched the icky gyoza/eggrolls they only remove 1 of 2 FLY soups and refuse to throw the rest of that soup out, endangering the health of everyone else dining there?? Shame on them! If a health inspector had been present they'd have been shut down.
We felt insulted and to make matters worse it was my b-day dinner, still I opted to call in my feedback after leaving, instead of leaving a bad review. BIG MISTAKE.
The rudeness encountered on this phone call was extraordinary. It was like speaking to a child that refuses to accept responsibility for anything and says, "I know you are but what am I?" After that interaction I threatened to report them to dept of health for inspection. The lady's response? She Laughs and says verbatim: "sure if that even happens". WOW, I've served, I've cooked, and I've run my own restaurant, but if any employee ever put my business in jeopardy with such childishness I'd term them immediately.
Then SHE DARED ME to come back. WHOA, If I'd known this was the person I'd be dealing with I'd have told everyone in there before leaving, "this place is serving you soup with flies in it." Sadly, we drove out of our way to try this place, so by the time this call occurred we were already trying to find another place to eat for my b-day. We found an excellent alternative, barely pricier and easily 5X better cleanliness/quality/service.
I regret sending the soup back before taking a picture of the fly in it, but I didn't think my interaction was going to go from bad to horrible after sending it back. My advice? Don't trust these reviews. The food isn't good quality, it's overpriced, and the staff? Well, read above. They don't care about a bad experience or if there's flies in your food! A good restaurant cares about it's reputation and their patrons.
We'll likely still call Health Dept to report them. I've got a feeling there's more than just flies in the soup, but I'd avoid MANA unless you're committed to eating insects and being...
Read moreAfter reading some of the reviews, I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. I was thinking it could either be one of those places with great food that you just have to wait for because good food takes time, or just one of those mediocre jack of all trades Asian cuisine places that doesn't do anything great and are just slow for no reason. It's kind of neither in my opinion.
I read about the services in the reviews, and I am going to have to say all of those reviews are accurate. That's a bad sign when I read more than a handful of reviews about bad service, and then the place confirms that information. When we walked in, there were two flustered girls at the front counter putting together to go orders. They ignored us for a few minutes until one of the sushi chefs at the bar motioned to us to pick a place to sit. That was irritating, considering as soon as we sat, the girls started greeting everyone who came in after us cheerfully. Our waitress came over almost immediately and asked if we were ready to order, and luckily, we were, but I would assume most people aren't ready to order immediately. She forgot to ask us what we wanted to drink and had to circle back around with that question. Basically, I can confirm, if they're busy, the service is spotty.
The meal came with complimentary miso soup or salad. We both got the miso. It was just OK, though my lady really didn't like it at all, so I ate both. They were luke warm, which was strange. It seems like it would be easy to keep a big cauldron of complimentary soup piping hot.
My lady ordered their signature sushi roll, and I ordered the tempura udon and we shared the crab rangoons. The rangoons came out, 4 for $6, and were also just OK. Not worth 6 bucks. The signature roll was stuffed full of many ingredients, and was large. I'm not a fan of sushi rolls that are so huge, you need dental tools to help shove each piece into your mouth. She liked it just fine, and she doesn't mind the more cumbersome rolls. My udon came out and the broth was very dark and luke warm again. It was super salty, almost as if I was eating noodles in soy sauce or beef broth or something. The noodles were a bit goopy. The tempura was beautiful and crunchy, and I was excited until I realized 88% of the pieces were sweet potato. I got one asparagus, one onion petal and 6 giant chunks of sweet potato. It was difficult to eat it all, it was so starchy and chewy.
I think what really turned us off was, while we were getting ready to leave, it was dying down and getting quiet in the restaurant, when the sushi chef loudly asked our waitress if she's charging extra on some particular dish if there's more avocado than rice. Her response was something like we always charge the same, I think in an awkward attempt to thwart this conversation in front of customers. To which the chef responded either charge more for avocado or start adding more rice and less avocado. Whenever someone asserts their cheapness in front of me in an establishment, I...
Read moreI do not recommend this place if you know what real sushi, egg flower/egg drop soup and bento meals are supposed to taste like.
-The egg flower soup was watery, lacked flavor, had giant pieces of onion and the egg was in large chunks. To fix these mistakes all they needed was better ratio of broth to water, cornstarch slurry, seasoning such as white pepper and ginger, better stirring and a finer whisking on the eggs before slowly pouring into the swirling soup.
-The sushi rice was not the correct type of rice, lacked rice vinegar and mirin which means no sushi rice flavor and no sticky rice texture or togetherness that sushi rice is supposed to have. Not worth the $8 in my opinion.
-The quality of the sushi was not up to par, there was a red vein which makes the fish taste almost blood like along the vein area, the way to fix that is to get better quality or ensure to trim off the red vein area on the fish. Not worth the $8 in my opinion.
-The fried rice had nearly no egg or seasoning making it quite bland and not worth the extra $1.
-The tempura was not done well and even underdone on some portions.
-Katsu was over cooked and had several gristle pieces throughout indicating poor cut of chicken.
If none of this bothers you then feel free to continue eating here, I will however not be coming here again due to the poor quality and lack of flavor. The only thing I liked about this place was that the service wasn't bad and were quick to fix a meal order...
