Coffee shops have become such an essential Keystone of the culture. I mean, I remember back when a cup of coffee was something (usually pretty dank) that you got at the local diner for next to nothing, more of a fast and dirty street drug than a fulfilling experience. This shows my age, but when modern coffee shops came on the scene, I thought it was a passing fad. Don't invest in my prophetic abilities. In fact, I was living in Japan when the phenomenon started and I thought, Man! What a weird idea. Fast forward to the nearly ubiquitous community gathering places that dot our towns like like freckles on on a redhead and that brings me to Coffee Beer. They are vegan and I didn't notice which is a huge point in their favor. I honor and respect people that tread that particular path, but I'd rather slack myself in the face with a porcupine than try and live a vegan lifestyle. Well Played Coffee Beer! Insidious...
So the drinks were good, the place was welcoming, the weather was just right, and the company was a treasure. We came from out of the area for a very special meeting and chose Coffee Beer out of the hat based on its reviews. It was an important meeting that meant a lot to us and having a safe and welcoming place was so important. The meeting went well, we never felt pressure to buy more or move on, the vibes were good.
So funny that coffee shops have become such hubs of their communities, such universal havens. Thank you Coffee Beer for recognizing that and making the experience just right. Maybe we should pass a law that instead of churches being the traditional sanctuaries they could be...
Read moreTL;DR: Cute place serves good coffee, beer, and lunchy foods. Dairy/Vegan friendly. Has plugs. Go here.
Looking for a neighborhood coffee place near Chavez and Holgate? I was. Then I walked down to Coffee Beer. With a recently refurbed interior, the seating has expanded and the space has opened up. Ample plugs and seating allow for a decent workspace experience. The staff are super friendly and welcoming and very clearly love the place that they have made. The coffee meets Portland standards with a few selections and lots of non-dairy creamers.
True to their name, they have a beer fridge that you can raid, with local beers and a rotating selection as well the standard PBR behind the counter. (Get the pFriem, always the pFriem) If you like a little more kick in your coffee, they offer harder liquors as well. The joint stays open into the evenings and gains a local bar vibe after sunset, still maintaining the same menu of drinks.
I didn't have a chance to sample the menu but they have a selection of sandwiches and pizzas and snackables, making this the perfect midday spot to spend some time, or the perfect park-and-work space.
The coffee selection isn't as expansive as more high end coffee shops but that's not their goal. The beer selection isn't at tap house level, but it doesn't need to be. The only detractors are that the interior is still a little austere and that can make it noisy with a lot of...
Read moreI have been going to Coffee Beer for a little over a year now. The ambience and decor is superb and I wish there were more places in Portland like Coffee Beer. Jessica and the staff do an incredible job keeping the plants healthy which promote a clean redolent that is neutral to coffee and beer drinkers alike. I keep going back hoping my experience will be better. Intermittently, to my dismay I do not get the welcoming vibe I am hoping for after a long days work. When I arrived one night the store was full and there was no one at the front counter. I waited for a couple minutes and asked a patron, ‘who is working?’ When the barista came out it appeared he was busy in the back settling financial business. He kindly poured me a beer and insisted to do so. During this time the manager/owner was working in the back. When the barista came out, the manager/owner opened the back door and shouted aloud to do ‘one more line! One more line!’ the owner then announced aloud of personal endeavors of trying to get off work and had been doing so for an hour. This experience left me feeling like I was an inconvenience to other plans and the time it took to pour me a beer was trifling. This is not the first, second, or third time I have felt this way at Coffee Beer therefore, I must rescind my future endeavors and expenses towards...
