A Pho Restaurant with Grilled Meat Salad – A Pleasant Surprise

I'll start out by saying that the food was exemplary. The Spring Rolls were extra crispy and the Spicy Beef Noodle Stew arrived at the table with all the color and depth of a bowl of glowing lava. The stew had great noodle lift, a nice little bite, layers of flavor, and there were plenty of basil leaves and sprouts to toss in. It was in fact one of the better bowls of broth that I have had in Portland, which is seriously saying something as I haunt the Pho shops like a lost ghost haunts crazy old cat ladies. I mean, the broth itself was even exceptionally beautiful, such a deep red and orange and yellow Well, sprinkled liberally with chopped green onion and hiding a treasure of tender beef and perfect noodles. So why only 4 stars out of 5? Am I one of those people who will only leave a 5 star rating if Jesus himself comes down out of the clouds to serve my table? No, I take a joy in dropping 5 stars on those who can wow me like this place wowed me. The problem is something else. The problem is the staff and it might not even be their fault. The place had a distinct cafeteria feel. It was busy of course and though it seemed the staff was banging, it did not look like they were understaffed, it was just, impersonal. Every interaction seemed rushed and distracted. I got none of that welcoming ethos that I find in so many Vietnamese Restaurants. If I lived down the street, I'd probably drop in pretty regularly, but I wouldn't go out of my way... I wouldn't take friends there or make it a destination, there are simply too many great places where the staff makes more of an effort to be friendly. I mean the meal came quickly, the staff seemed to be keeping the place clean and everything, but I just didn't feel welcome. I mean, man! When I went to the pho place where no one spoke much english, I still felt more welcomed than Pho Hung on Powell. The clientele was certainly different than most Pho places around, not one Asian Family that I could see. Lots of what looked like students from the area. I suppose I might be asking too much. Asking that I be greeted with some small semblance of friendliness, asking that the server pause for just a moment while taking my order , that someone smile for god's sake. There seems to be a disconnect there. I feel the passion, or at least the patience in the food, but not in the servers. I won't avoid the place, but it will never be a Destination. Four out of five isn't all that bad... really. I mean it's kind of good... right? But like I said, it might not be the staffs problem (other than youth). It might be a management issue. PS... Looking back over past reviews it becomes apparent that service is their weak point. Management generally replies with a standard "come try us again", but does not seem to address the issue. Before the place fulfills its true potential, they will need to deal with this.

Being Vietnamese myself and being from the bay area I grew up with home made pho and many authentic pho restaurants at every corner. Therefore, I am very picky about the pho restaurants I go to due to my high standards. So I read reviews about how great the broth is at this place. I take reviews for pho restaurants with a grain of salt in the portland area because sometimes they're often provided by folks who never really had authentic pho.. But I gave it the benefit of the doubt and told my friend I wanted to try this place. She agreed. Got seated right away at 1130am. Our food order came out pretty fast. I got the Hu Tieu and it came with a fried chicken leg. The chicken leg was very very dry but the Hu Tieu was soooooo good. The broth was on point and it reminded me so much of home (which says a lot). It had so much flavor and a great balance of all the aromatics and spices. While I must tried the Hu Tieu, I have no doubt that the pho is equally as good because of the similar broth that is used between the two. Service was decent and even though it was getting busy, we did not feel rushed to leave My friend ordered the banh mi sandwiches and she said it was really good. I didn't try it but I made a mental more to buy one in the future. It did get loud and busy for the next hour and a half we were there. So this place does get busy. I plan on coming back here with my bf. The reason for my minus 1 star is that the dishes are kind of expensive for the type of food that is being offered.

Ok anyone that knows me knows how much I love Pho and every new city I visit for work my mission is to find a Pho place that I can regularly visit. I have found that, Pho Húng on Powell was amazing. The complementary tea is so warming and welcoming. I ordered the spring rolls with combination pho. The spring rolls were amazing. I loved how fresh and aromatic the ingredients were, the rice wraps had the perfect consistency of texture throughout, the peanut sauce was ohhhh how can I say it , i just want a whole jar to take home. The balance of sweet and salty was so satisfying. The pho was completely delicious, one thing that I do before adding any ingredients to my pho is taste the broth, this broth was very tasty with settling beef flavor and spices, i love the fact they didn’t mask the taste with star anise , this let me know the broth was pure made. The meat and noodle portion were very good. I even had to sit there for a few moments before leaving as my body was in such a state of comfort from the hot soup it made me just want to nap. This is my go to place for Pho and I highly recommend this establishment.

I’ve been unswervingly loyal to Pho Hung’s vegetarian pho for at least a year now. It is a miracle how rich and well seasoned a veggie broth could be. That is coming from someone who rarely orders from the vegetarian menu. Pho Hung is consistently fast, clean, plesant, full service with mint, sprouts, lime, and jalapeño for each person. However, I strayed from the vegetarian for their # 30 Hu Neu Thap Cam. It’s one of the best meals I’ve had on a night out. The broth is pure and rich. The pork was delicate and tender. The fish cakes and shrimp were a delight. The chicken leg really topped the whole entree off. I’m not sure this soup needed it, but the fact that it was there just felt like a gift as all good food should. I took a few bites of the chicken leg and threw the rest in the pho and it truly became the rice noodle soup I ordered. I came in to Pho Hung feeling emotional tonight and I left feeling happier and more at peace. Thank you.

One of my favorite thing to do when I travel is to seek out noodle soup places. I have tried noodle soup in iceland, Peru, middle Montana and etc... So my Oregon trip was no different. We found Pho Hung after a little searching and decided to make the 20 minutes drive there. I'm glad we did, the soup was flavorful, the meats and noodles are cooked perfectly. The portion was just right as well. Small is just right for light eaters, and large is prefect for a noodle soup lover like myself. The egg rolls was great too. So if you have never been to this pho place before and you like pho, give this place a try. You won't regret it!
