I had heard about smash burgers, and Monster Smash was a terrific in-person introduction. The uneven, fractal-like edges crisp up beautifully on the grill. A puffy, yet substantial bun provides a wonderful counterpoint, creating a mouthful of contrasting textures with every bite. I ordered a side of their fries, which came with a container of mayo - so, if your visit includes popping into Belmont Station next door, you might want to consider a Belgian beer to go with them. If you should order the fries, be aware that one serving is enough for multiple people. I had a large serving with my burger, another large serving with lunch the following day, and still had a third meal's worth. Pro tip - reheating their fries on a metal tray in a toaster oven works great. The cart in this location has a history of good food that goes well with the astonishing beer variety at Belmont Station. I'm thrilled to see Monster Smash keeping up the tradition.

They don't have a lot on their menu but it's enough. Their monster smash burger, what they're known for, comes with two "smashed" patties, cheese, monster sauce (something like a cheese sauce?), sweet pickle slices, and a relish, between two buttered brioche buns. Is it good? Yeah. Is it amazing? Eh. As I ate them, their components were flavorful (the pickles, buns, and meat were particularly good by themselves), but eating them together...nothing really popped. Maybe the meat wasn't salted enough? Not enough acid? There was just something missing. However, the smashed patty concept was cool. The smashed and fried ends reminded me of hash (both in texture and flavor). That alone would be the reason to try this burger. And for $10, I can recommend it as a non-fussy, good burger choice. The fries were good, too. Very crispy and nicely salted.

My recent visit to Monster Smash left me with mixed feelings. While it's great to see another smash burger joint in Portland, the overall experience fell short of expectations. The burger and fries were decent. The patties were cooked well and the fries were crispy and satisfying. However, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing. The flavors seemed somewhat muted, and there was a noticeable lack of toppings to add that extra kick. One of the main disappointments was the thinness of the patties. While smash burgers are known for their thin patties, these seemed to border on too thin, resulting in a lack of substantial bite and texture.

As others have stated, if you go here... be prepared for an extremely long wait. Not because it's busy but because they are very very inefficient. Live very near here and have ordered this many times. They prepare the burgers order by order which means, if there is an order with one burger and a order behind it with 3... they won't cook all 4 at once. This leads to extremely long wait times with even a nominal amount of orders. If you go when it is only a few orders up, it'll take 30 minutes minimum no matter what their online ordering says. If you go and its busy? You could easily be waiting 90-120 minutes for food. The estimates they give at the window are always wrong. He will say "30 minutes" and you can almost always double it. The food is good, and the people that say the meat is burnt, I assume don't eat many smash burgers as the whole idea is that they can't really be over cooked. That's the style. I honestly like the food. The fries are always crisp and hot. The burgers are good. The vegan burger is even quite good. But rest assured, there is nothing quick about ordering...

Ya know these days, with knowing how much people are getting paid in the industry I was a part of for almost a decade, you would think that it would turn out better customer service. But there are definitely more times than not when you have to sit and wonder what it is these people are so upset about. The dude that took our order was one of these people. How bout a smile? Or maybe I don’t know, a little bit of enthusiasm. But no, just a bummer of an interaction. Between taking the order and then acting like we put him out asking for some more ketchup…not exactly who I’d want to be the face of my product. But anyway, it’s not the first time I’ve been here. And that sort of interaction hasn’t always been the case. The smash burger itself is damn delicious…minus their house pickles, which are sweet. I really wish there was an option to get dill pickles, but there’s not. Regardless, even sans pickles, it’s a great burger. The fries are super solid. Pair it with Belmont Station’s extensive beer selection and you should have a pretty damn good experience…after you get past the downer of a guy...

I came for the Monsters & was glad I stayed for the Smashburger. Literally found this place because I had to pull off on the side of the road to let a truck pass & saw Bride of Frankenstein on the side of the food truck & thought to myself, "I like spooky burgers." My partner & I split the Vegan Smash & Fries and we both were stuffed & had fries leftover for later. They are the kind of fries that are seasoned so well they don't need a condiment and stay crispy even when they're not hot anymore. I want to take a bath in the garlic dipping sauce it's so good. The burger was smashed perfectly, crispy on the edges & juicy in the middle & it's the kind of Vegan burger that makes you think it's real meat because it's that good. My partner hates pickles (passionately) & these are the first pickles that have ever changed his mind. Belmont Station next door has anything you could ever want to drink. And you're only like 3 blocks from Movie Madness so you can go rent Bride of Frankenstein afterward (we did.) Put this burger in your facehole, you'll be glad you did! 5/5 Monsters agree, would...
