It's funny, almost every single negative review is because of today's technology and how people go about their lives. As I sat and ate, there were absolutely 3x the amount of people coming in to pick up their food app orders. A very small number of people were actually there to sit down and eat.
This place very clearly is a family business. What that means is - and I'll break it down to you people who have never worked in food service - is that you have to learn things the hard way. This place should never apologize for being bombarded with mobile to go orders while trying their best to serve in-restaraunt patrons. Try giving them a moment to adapt and overcome.
The only "negative" things that stood out to me was due to the space this business occupies. Here's what I mean.
I was confused as to when (or if) I was supposed to order at the counter. And This place lacks their own identity.
These two "complaints" of mine can be attributed to the fact that it's a curry spot inside of a 50's rock and roll diner. There's a bar with stools, but I wouldn't feel comfortable eating there. I would absolutely feel alright popping in and ordering a beer or wine or lassi and hanging out at the bar, but it would feel a little forced.
Regardless of the lack of identity and what I sensed to be greenhorn table service, the food itself had made up for by a long shot. It is very delicious. Also, I had no idea there was a naan quesadilla hahah. Which is also incredibly fantastic.
I hope the pressures of those who don't understand what it is to serve others precious meals does not hold this place back from their potential. And I hope they're safe, being in the heart of the Johns.
Overall thank you guys, I will see you again.
I got mix veg pakora, shahi paneer, chicken cheese naan, and a mango lassi. $33 and I took about half of it to go for my work lunch /...
Read moreThis is the best Indian food I’ve had in Portland in the 25 years I’ve lived here! I ordered take out recently, and it was incredibly delicious, perfect spice level (I ordered medium spice) and very fresh. You can taste the complexity of fresh spices that are being used and the meat in my meat dishes were so tender and juicy. Every dish I ordered was perfect! As a side note, I grew up eating the best Indian food in Boston Ma, and Ive traveled to India and experienced authentic Indian food from different regions, so my pallet is discerning to say the least. I enjoyed their Chicken Tikka Masala (amazing complexity to this dish!), their Saagwaala with Lamb was to die for (the large tender pieces of lamb made this dish next level), the potato samosas were good (even the sauces were amazing and not watered down like other portland Indians places, like the mint chutney and tamarind sauces, they were authentically full flavored and delicious). The butter nan was excellent and perfectly chewy and crisp at the same time. I’m truly so grateful they decided to open in St Johns, a place I’ve lived now for two years, which I feel has needed more cultural diverse food option (how many pizza spots do we have, right?!) Good Indian food is so hard to find in Portland (I’ve tried many places here) and based on my experience this place is definitely one of the best! I spoke to a coworker who happens to be from India about this place and he said it’s his favorite spot to eat at for an Indian in Vancouver. This was very validating to hear it’s his favorite place too. So I will look forward to dining in soon and trying all of their dishes. I wish them...
Read moreJust left this place without receiving our food. Terrible terrible experience.
We were so excited to try the first Indian restaurant in St.Johns. We came in at 6pm and an hour and 45 mins later, we didn’t receive anything and neither did any other table. They were bringing out bag after bag of take out food but no one had received a single appetizer. Children started crying , waters were not refilled and every time we would ask staff they would just dismiss us and never give us a time estimate nor even check on anyone.
I work in the service industry and usually give a lot of grace but this was baffling. I looked in the kitchen to see if they were understaffed and they had four whole cooks!! Two servers and people were waiting 2 hours for appetizers. Ridiculous.
A family got up and left after receiving one tiny appetizer and the server with glasses chased them out asking him to pay ! The server even grabbed the man’s arm. Luckily he refused to pay but that’s just an example of the incompetence.
We ordered two appetizers and one main dish. He even asked us the spice level of our entree but after receiving our appetizers two hours later….he said we didn’t order our entree. I truly believe he deleted our entree after we expressed how angry we were with the lack of service. We left without paying…
Do not eat here. The disrespect and incompetency was unbelievable. The skinny server with glasses and a polo should be fired. He was rude to everyone, did not communicate and played dumb then gaslit us saying we didn’t order an entree. This place is...
