Quick and easy Lunch
I stopped into the Thai Cottage last year with business colleagues from EVRAZ Portland. This was their goto lunch place and they said I would not be disappointed if I ate there and they were right. I was actually on my way to the airport to catch an afternoon flight but decided to skip eating at the airport and to eat here instead. Nestled into a nice strip of shops and businesses with a yellow storefront, it was easy to find. Parking was only available ion the street but was easily found.
The restaurant inside is not a big place but there ample enough space for about 30 people to eat at once time. It is a family run place and the people that own and run the restaurant treat you very well like you're part of the family. The smell when you walk in is very inviting, you can smell meat cooking, the species, the broths, and you know before you even sit down the food is going to be fantastic. We ordered a couple of appetizers, and for my main course, I ordered a curry chicken dish. The broth was fantastic, and very savoury, while not too harsh on the spiciness. The broth had a good texture to it and was easy to eat with a side of rice. This wasn't a huge portion size, hence very good for lunch. The service was great, the food, at least what I had was very good, and very good value for what I paid for it. I would eat...
Read moreHorrible experience - lousy food, not worth the wait or the money.
I ordered chicken pad kee mao, extra spicy. I was told 15-20 minutes for the wait, which was fine.
I wait in the little seating area just outside the kitchen. At the 30 minute mark I overhear, "this is steak pad kee mao. It is supposed to be chicken."
No one says one word to me about the delay, how much longer it'll be, would I like a glass of water, nothing.
At 45 minutes, I had chicken pad kee mao in hand and left.
The fish sauce was extremely overused. While I appreciate the addition to the dish, it was almost angrily used - as if i was to blame for the cook using steak instead of chicken. The dish was saturated in the fish sauce, such a strong smell, and it leaked outside of the container and into the bag.
The first bite of chicken had that disgusting chewy unexplainable bit in it that tells me more than what I want to know about the business. The 4th and 5th bite did, too.
Extremely poor quality. Poor preparation. Horrible timing and management. And not even a "sorry about the delay."
I have thai food 2-3 times per week. I'm a loyal patron. Thai Cottage will never again see a dime from me. Too many things were wrong with my meal. There are better options. ...
Read moreHighly recommend, best Thai food I’ve had! their prices were reasonable, the portions were big. Pad kee mao is a GO and so is the curry. The crab puffs have real crab and they also were delicious.
The look of the restaurant was adorable and cohesive and homey and made me feel right in place. A wonderful dinner choice and a great hole in the wall. Will absolutely be back!
EDIT: as of 11/01 I have gone back, now for lunch, and I must say I was disappointed this time around… although my pad kee mao was still tasty; my crab puffs however were remarkably over cooked. I had ordered two sides for my lunch with friends, and the crab puffs were so crunchy that they could barely be eaten. When we asked the waitress if we could possibly send them back and have them redone, she told me that “oh no honey that’s all we can do” But last time they were delicious and perfectly cooked. Honestly it just seemed like the oil was too hot but it was kinda uncomfortable to be responded to that way. Then the waitress lingered directly over our shoulders when signing the receipt for the tip amount. Just kind of an unpleasant experience compared to the great dinner experience I...
