The Pho Hung empire used to be glorious, with three locations within Portland. And then something happened, and places got sold. Pho Hung 2 on NE Fremont got changed to be Pho Vinh, and now it's Pho Pasteur or something like that (with a completely different pho recipe). The original Pho Hung is still on SE Powell, but Pho Hung 82nd is owned by a different person. Believe it or not, both have similar pho taste. Both places know me decently well. There's this Vietnamese saying that allows us to express the greatness in a broth, and translating it won't do justice to anything at all! A taste of the broth is "concentrated" enough for the heart to feel comfort and warmth, as it goes down to the tummy center. You know when it's good, when all the pho is gone from the bowl!
I'm feeling sick, so I got my usual pho in a small bowl. Pho tai gau gan. Rare round steak and fatty brisket. But I added tendon to honor my living dad because we'd go to pho when I was in my youth and helped him with our family business.
Plus, don't judge me on this, got rice porridge with pork pudding. Chao huyet (usually Chao Long, but they made it special for me) I know it's not kosher, but my Viet soul needs...
Read moreThese people are racist. The quality of service they gave us was horrible compared to how they treated the other customers. They had tried to scam us of our money and ACCUSED us of stealing. The food wasn’t even good: the meat was terribly undercooked and the vegetables they brought out for the pho was reused. The noodles were still cold. They give you the smallest amount of noodles and meat and the rest is unseasoned water. Just HORRIBLE. If you plan on eating here, DON’T. The staff will watch you while you eat. Not even in a helpful way. They made us very uncomfortable and when we needed something and tried to make eye contact or ask for service, they suddenly want to ignore us. I don’t know what you have experienced. But I’ve heard horrible stories from friends and I have my own experiences at this place. They don’t care about their black and Latino customers. These people discriminate subliminally using microaggressions. All they care about is taking your money instead of caring about your experience there. I will NOT be...
Read moreEvery week I’m in a different city for work and I will always make a stop for Vietnamese food. This week while in Portland I stumbled across this restaurant and looked them up and yes I will have to agree with a lot of the other reviews before me. Authentic flavors bringing back childhood memories.
I ordered the #34, Rice Platter with Grilled Pork, Pork Skin and Vietnamese Egg Pork Patty
The service is quick. The moment I walked in I was greeted right away and was seated at my table by the front door. After sitting down and barely picking up the menu to read thru another person came by and served me a cup of ice water. I shit you not, I was probably in and out within 30 minutes and no, they were not rushing me.. they are just that quick and on top of their business!
Atmosphere was clean, cozy and quiet even with other customers they already had prior to my visit.
I am adding this place to my go-to list for Portland for next time I’m out here for either business or leisure.
Thank you for uplifting my soul, I really...
