Pine State Biscuits is a modern take on fresh baked biscuits located in Portland. For the purposes of this review, it is the Alberta location. Parking is relatively good with ample street parking available. You know you are at the right place when you see a lineup that stretches around the corner.
The decor of the restaurant is modern and clean. From the outside, you can gaze into the restaurant where you can see their staff baking away fresh biscuits and other pastry items. Don't let the lineup deter you if you get easily cold because there is heating under their awning. Once you enter, you get to place your order before sitting down. We found that this was quite typical of Portland restaurants where you pay for your order first and then the food is given to you.
The restaurant will seat around 50 people. The restaurant itself will seat around 30 people (with bar area) with an additional 20 seats available on the patio. You are expected to bus your own trays and get your own utensils. Water is available right by the door.
For this visit, we opted to get the Reggie Deluxe, Steak Club, and Fries with cheese. We placed our order and was given our number tag. The restaurant was packed as you would expect from the lineup so we opted to sit in the patio area. We were happy to find out that the patio area is heated as well. Our food came after about 15 minutes and looked amazing.
The Reggie Deluxe comes with Fried chicken, bacon, cheese, fried egg, and gravy. The biscuit was soft and absorbed all the gravy and really helped clean the plate. The fried chicken was nice and juicy. The size of the fried chicken was quite generous and more than what we were expecting. The gravy provided a subtle mushroom flavour that really complements this dish. The bacon ties it all together with a great salty savoury bite. We can honestly say that we have never had anything like this. It was a collage of flavours that were new and exciting for us. Our first bite was an experience.
The Steak Club was equally (maybe if not more) amazing than the Reggie Deluxe. It had your biscuit, steak, tomato, mixed greens and topped with your choice of ranch or blue cheese sauce. We opted for ranch and were not disappointed. The steak pieces they provide were thin and packed full of flavour. The mixed greens were fresh and crisp. The tomato slice was a perfect addition and the ranch sauce (oddly enough) really tied it all together.
The fries topped with cheese was just that. Fresh cut fries topped with cheddar cheese. It was nicely salted and was alright but nothing to write home about.
Our only regret is not ordering the Hash Ups with Steak. We saw other tables with it and it looked amazing. Unfortunately we were already full and the lineup didn't die down at all so we'll have to make sure to order it for next time.
If you have not eaten Southern food before or would just like to try, we would happily recommend Pine State Biscuits. Our experience was great at this location where staff were friendly and everyone was courteous. The food was equally great and we regret that we could...
Read moreThis is a fantastic breakfast/brunch spot as long as you're able to brave the lines during the busier times. I came here by myself, so I didn't have to wait at all. You order at the cashier, and then find a seat (I sat in the bar area). I tried three items: Reggie Deluxe, Shrimp-N-Grits, and a biscuit with marionberry jam. All three of those menu items were excellent. The Reggie Deluxe is a biscuit sandwich that consists of fried chicken, bacon, cheese, and egg... sitting in a lake of gravy. The Reggie is a similar menu item, but without the egg. Shrimp-N-Grits is what it sounds like. Shrimp, sauteed in garlic, mushrooms, green onions, and bacon... with grits. Biscuit with marionberry jam is also what it sounds like. The Reggie Deluxe is a great option for someone looking for flavor and size. The gravy is a good complement to the biscuit sandwich. Whether you like the Shrimp-N-Grits will ultimately depend on whether you like how the shrimp was sauteed. I thought it was a little bit on the salty side, but I thought the amount of saltiness was appropriate given the flavor. If you love sauteed mushrooms, this is a must-try item. Marionberry jam (or marionberries in general) are supposedly an "Oregon thing," so I had to give it a try. Marionberry tastes similar to blackberry, and it was delicious as a spread for the biscuit! They definitely did not skimp on the jam, as it was enough to generously cover both halves of the biscuit. Service is friendly here, and the advantage of sitting in the bar area was being able to see the cooks at work! Despite the place being busy, they always managed to be upbeat and work efficiently. I loved observing how the staff there worked as a team and communicated really well to make sure the orders were all correct. I would this is a Top-2 breakfast place in Portland (along with...
Read moreI’ve been here several times and today 2/24/24 around 810-815am the lady at the register was extremely rude to not only my family, but the couple in front of us.
I understand there’s a first come first serve rule regarding seating. There were 3 people in front that were headed to seats, a couple (next to order), then us (family of 4). My kiddos were squirming and practically next to order so I headed to sit down. As I came back towards the door to grab a high chair she stops the order for the couple in front and continues to say you can’t sit yet it’s first come first serve…. If it weren’t for my kiddos being hungry I would have left.
The couple in front of us were super nice and said don’t worry we do not need a table go ahead. The fact that she was persistent I don’t sit down until we ordered so we ordered and we sat.
As we were packing up to leave there was a person waiting for her friend and she was able to sit down without ordering and the lady was completely fine with it.
Food was great as usual 5/5, but the lady forgot one of our items in our order and gave it to us cold. I think this was on purpose.
This right here is why people don’t tip/tip well and leave negative reviews. The first interaction I had was so negative first thing in the morning. That person is definitely back of the house kind of personality and shouldn’t be the first interaction...
