Read moreMy roommate and I used to go to this spot all the time pre-CV and absolutely loved /everything/ on the menu. Finally had my first miss yesterday when getting brunch with old friends from out of town.
For reference, we ate inside and had to wait a half hour for a table for 4 when we arrived at 10 on a Saturday (better than usual!). We were seated at the large communal table at the back.
First thing I noticed is that the menu is considerably smaller than it used to be, and that none of the original staff seemed to be there. I know they’re opening a PM in Austin and wondered if the OG crew has hopped down there.
It took about 10 minutes before a waitress came by to take our drink order. I got a latte and my roommate got the Bloody Mary - which he loves and says is the best in Portland! Latte, while delicious, was tiny and served in a small glass cup which got very hot to the touch - different from the larger ceramic latte mugs they used to serve them in. The Bloody Mary was reported as amazing as ever, but they’re now serving them in small mason jars instead of the giant beer glasses they used to use. Smaller portions all around.
It took about 20 minutes to receive our drinks after we ordered them, and our waitress only placed our food orders after we had our drinks. After that, we ended up waiting about 30 minutes for food for 4, and watched the two parties that were seated after us at the same table receive their orders before us… we were really hungry by the time our food came!
On to the grub:
Two of us got the avocado toast. The current variation has strawberries, mixed greens and balsamic + two avocado halves on top of untoasted seeded bread. They missed me with this - it felt more like eating a salad than avo toast - and it was hard to wrangle into bite sized pieces. I wish they could have at least sliced the avocado as the two giant halves, while pretty, made an awkward serving. I finished still hungry. (I say bring back the crunchy, savory harissa avo toast where the avocado was actually sliced and smothered in delicious EVOO, and you could add an egg to it without it clashing with the topping ensemble! So good, as was the edamame toast).
My roommate ordered the hash and enjoyed as much as ever! Hard to go wrong with that one.
My other friend got the bowl, but didn’t finish it, and didn’t remark a thing about it.
Overall this wasn’t the PM I remembered - everything felt a bit more curt, expensive & impersonal - but perhaps that’s inevitable as a popular restaurant ages and grows. I’ll still be back for...
Read moreWe found this little place on the way to the airport this morning. I suggested to Jenn that we try someplace new and she picked Proud Mary Coffee. Here is what we had and how we liked it:
Drinks: Yellow Catuai - Sitio Triunfo - This is a Pour over that had incredible hints of Chocolate, floral, mandarin and raspberry. It was a very pleasant cup of coffee. It was super interesting that they brought you the grounds before they made it for you to smell. I am not sure if it added anything to the drink but it was a cool little thing they did. I would give this a 4/5 stars.
Rhubarb Spritz - Vodka, Rhubarb, Lemongrass, & Ginger Tea - This was pleasantly refreshing. Jenn said it was a tad stronger than she liked but it was good. 3/5 stars
Berry & White Chocolate Muffin - Holy moly this was amazing. We shared this while waiting for our main dish. It was light and delicious. I dont give 5 stars often but holy heck it was good 5/5 stars.
Asparagus Crumpet - Charred asparagus, crumpet, almond cream, pecorino, cured egg yolk, garlic chips, two poached eggs. This was Jenn's dish. She really liked it. The poached eggs were perfectly cooked, the asparagus was charred but not overly with a nice amount of pecorino melted on top. Over all she said it was a 5/5 star.
Korean Fried Chicken Sando - Fried chicken, red cabbage & daikon kimchi slaw, gochujang sauce. served with pommes dauphines. This was a super tasty sandwich. The friend chicken was cooked incredibly well. It had big bold flavor from the gochujang. I wasn't a super fan of the pommes dauphines. They were fine but lacked a little bit on the flavor. Overall the dish was presented well and tasty. 4/5 stars.
But... what stole the show was their house made hot sauce. I am not tottally sure what was in it but my guess is, Jalapeno, Tomatillo, Cilantro, Olive Oil Garlic and a pinch of salt. This was incredible.
last but not least the server was amazing. She was on point and gave us a, Hell Yeah" every time she confirmed our request.
