(review of the restaurant side. Haven't been to the bar side ... yet. We hear that they have karaoke, though so ...)
Comfortable, cheap, good working-class eats, serves Boyd's coffee - this place is Old Portland AF. Everything on-point here, the food, the atmosphere, comfortable seating, the working-class diner still lives in gentrifying SE Portland, and it lives at Tom's.
Cheeseburger was great size-not too big, not to small, exactly satisfying. Coffee, of course, was splendid. An interesting thing about the fries is they're priced ala-carte style, so you can get a single side to share if your diet dictates. This means you can get out of there with two burgers, fries, and a decent tip and still get change from at $20. Everything just-right, even the server, who came by precisely when we needed her, not before and not after.
It's a shame that it isn't open later than it is, because sitting in a window-booth watching the traffic and people go by after midnight would be so perfect, Edward Hopper could have painted it.
We hear they have karaoke Saturday nights, and I'm looking forward to a chance to try more of the menu items. Breakfast burritos? I'm down. TACO OMELETTES? I'm sold right there. It took us a long time to try this place out, but I'm glad we finally did. It's going to be a regular stop for us from...
Read moreThe waitress that served the food are nice..the tall gurl who works on sunday and a really bubbly personality young girl...she seemed like maybe just out of high school...anyways I stopped there on Sunday with my wife and kid...they were busy so took forever for food to come. But the food was just way below average. Biscuits are suppose to be soft and we have to fight with that bisciit inorder to have a bite size piece. Gravy was more like of a retirement home...awful. I orderd over easy fried egg and they gave me like hard yolk cooked to death. And everything was of temperature like you will feed to a 6 month old baby. I thought only Denny's served crappy biscuits and gravy. I donno why I didn't go to The Pancake House..which by the way rocks in every which way. Besides the two waitresses which served our food and coffee...all the other staff seemed like they donno what smile is...super stressed. Lookin at them was making me like I gotta go....that kinda feeling. I'm not a regular there..but gave stopped like 5 times in past few yrs...and keep forgetting none of my experience was good. Thats just to blame my memory I guess...Paid the check and off we were. FYI..I know its a diner but so is The Pancaje House...and they both have been at their respective locations for about more or less...
Read moreMy family has been coming to Tom’s for around 15 years. The food quality, friendly staff and best prices have been bringing us back almost monthly. I highly recommend the chicken fried steak breakfast (or dinner if you want veggies and mashed potatoes instead of hash browns and eggs), biscuits and gravy (my son loves it better than any other restaurant we’ve tried them at), the Club House, corned beef or Reuben sandwich (least expensive around) and the delicious French Dip (it’s the only sandwich that comes with fries)!! There are a lot of regulars that support this 49 year old restaurant and bar. The decor is simple with plenty of booths. They offer a great selection of pie slices that sell out on most days. The menu has some Greek offerings, as well as many diner standards, and the lemon soup with orzo is very different and tasty. The bar is separated from the restaurant yet you can order food while watching sports, playing games and pool or hanging out in the large room. I know a number of folks that have always noticed Tom’s on its busy corner but have never tried it. It’s time...
