The VERDICT: Best tasting Sushi I ever had. It really does taste better then many I've tried out around PDX. It's made right to order. And he gives you FIRST GRADE high quality boxes and chopsticks. This is the REAL deal if you want the best part of Japan in Portland. DETAILED REVIEW / Quirks and Features: FAN of Tokyo Lens? You might find this little food cart right at home. As most of you know? I don't really dabble in Japanese food. I've tried sushi before, but it was never really what I would consider "Good" or craved before. Umami Sushi PDX changed all that for me. FIRST time at food cart. Not a fan since they don't have a place to wash your hands nor a restroom. But if you want food to go? There is no better in Alberta IMO for take out or the sheer joy of soft rice, and rolls made so good? You can bounce them on a wall and they will stick together. I actually crave his food like someone would want a burger or pizza or etc. That's not a small feat as I never found sushi all that appealing from other places. ' What I can tell you is that from start to finish? This may be the best place to try out sushi for the first time. They have menus right on front with Photos of EVERYTHING so you can see the menu & descriptions are even provided under each item. So you don't need to take a japanese Language course nor a culinary arts degree to simply order here. And I know this is going to sound weird? But it's so relaxing to order takeout from here. Its even fun to look over the menu items as there are many. That little space is inviting and comfy. Even on rainy days. He puts out a heater as well. And there is fan for warmer days. Nice seating there as you can see from the photos and its CLEAN! Now I can't tell you weather this does in fact taste like your mom made it or your trip to Japan. All I can tell you is that it tasted very good. Watch out for the Wasabi. It's way more powerful than Tabasco. :-) Hours are around 7PM each day just to be sage, and the best time I would say would be around lunch or early dinner. Regardless, food was always top notch. I even like the "Egg rolls". Unlike some other places? This dude is legit a Sushi chef. (unlike another place that won't do "Custom sushi orders" down the street in a nice looking restaurant. LoLz! Also? Take a LOOK at how GOOD the dishes look. They look even better than the Photos. And prices (From what I understand) are cheaper than the grocery store (SupaYUKYShishty) ;-) Improvements? Could use a Hand wash station. But most folks know how to eat with CHopsticks. Have a good one! And try it out. Another one of the reasons why ALberta is one of the best places in Portland.

Delicious, convenient and affordable. We came here because the sushi restaurant down the way required reservations even though the restaurant was empty. I am glad we found Umami because it was so good. All of the rolls we tried were great, Spicy tuna, dragon, double, salmon. The service was also excellent. He warned us that the proportions were large and we ignored him and ordered too much. If he tells you you've ordered a lot, listen! The atmosphere was also very nice especially with the nice weather out. Would recommend!!

Absolutely delicious sushi! I tried the Portland Roll during my first visit here and it was so yummy, it definitely had me wanting to come back to try other rolls. I highly recommend a stop here. Umami Sushi is a great spot to pick up to go or sit down at the multiple different seats and enjoy your food. I recommend!

For a cart, the owner has a lot of choices of Sushi rolls. They’re not inventive, but boy does he have the quality down. If you’re looking for a sushi value town, this is it.

The owner is very friendly and recommended the “New Rose City Roll”, it was great and no doubt be in our next order.

Will be back.

Updated May 2025: still kicking and undisputed king of quality.! Every time we go, we tell ourselves to go there more often. Too bad the cart pod is still a bit grungy, but we really love the freshness and care the owner puts in the food. Easily the best place to get sushi this side...

I'm so thankful a place like this exists in this area of pricier sushi.

The owner is always genuinely kind, and the value is great for what you pay, portions and quality wise. I am no stranger to top-quality sushi and can say this is not that. But as a weekly to-go lunch meal, his cart is a fantastic option and better than a revolving sushi restaurant for sure.

The only disappointment of this place is that they are not consistent with their listed open hours. I've shown up multiple times to the cart being closed. So now I always call...
