2025 Review: This place has gone through major overhaul! The Zed formerly known as ZHaus was always a great spot for community and beer— and they doubled down and chose to focus on just that. There are a variety of food stalls to choose from along with a stage area for live music, and a large spot that opens toward their parking lot, which serves as the location of the Lents international farmers market. Happy to have a good place to grab food a beer and spend time with my friends.
2018 Review: I want so badly to like this place, I really really do. This neighborhood hasn't had a lot in the way of high quality restaurants and when this opened up, they were welcomed with open arms. Unfortunately it just doesn't live up to our expectations. The food is subpar: The ingredient leave a lot to be desired and the execution just isn't there. Salads come with wilty/old looking veggies. Bread is overly toasted. Fried food is extra greasy. The best thing on the menu is probably the kids Mac & Cheese--it's really tasty! The service is rarely good: Sometimes we have attentive servers, but most often service is slow or bumpy. We have had experiences with LOOOONG waits and no check ins or apologies, times where incorrect orders come out, and times with just blah servers. What's even more frustrating is when it doesn't seem to be because it's busy. One time we had a terrible experience, but it was SLAMMED. But often, we see staff talking to each other rather than being attentive to customers. The beer is great: If you sit at the bar you can be fairly guaranteed to get good service. There's a beautiful skylight over the bar as well, so it's really a nice spot. They also have great deals for growler fills. Also, they are wonderfully involved in the community. They support local fairs, the farmers market, The Pickles Games/fans, and more. They open their doors to people during the heat and offer water without requiring purchases. They have so much potential, and the community is very supportive because they want them to succeed. But there is now a lot of construction with new food options opening up soon, and Z-Haus won't be able to rest on the dedication of the community alone. Real changes need to be made to improve the quality of the ingredients, the execution of cooking, and the...
Read moreI'm mourning my break-up with one of my favorite restaurants. I just don't think I can give them any more of my business. I usually eat there 2-3 times a week (I know, food rut!). I love their beer, the servers are friendly, the atmosphere is usually wonderful. I've been so pleased to see a brewpub open in our neighborhood. Back in February, I booked the meeting room for 6 dates over 6 months. I was told, via email, that "I have all the listed dates reserved for you now. You need to do nothing further at this point, and I will contact you about a week out from your first date (March 20th) to discuss any food and beverage needs." Fast forward to March 20th. I realize I haven't heard anything from Chris (general manager). I email him, and he tells me he's given the private room away, but he will give me a table on one side of the restaurant. He was unhelpful, dismissive, and truly, seemed unconcerned and unwilling to take any action to make up for what he chose to do. He blamed me, saying that I hadn't confirmed. When I read his own email back to him, he simply told me "I don't want to argue with you". I stayed and used the space he allotted us, as it wasn't possible to change my plans at that late date. While there, I could see that he was able to book for a larger party, and I'm sure he made a profitable business decision. But to be underhanded and lie to me about the situation, and tell me he called me (I checked my phone records, and no, he didn't) was just rude. As I told him, I had been more than willing to live up to what he told me the food and drink minimum was ($200). But I expected and planned to have the dates reserved for me, as his email stated. I really hate that I was lied to, and he wants to place the...
Read moreNew Review 2025: This place has totally changed! It has expanded into a massive food court of sorts. The delicious beer is front and center, there's now a cocktail lounge to the side, and micro restaurant/food stalls are scattered throughout offering tons of choices. Venezuelan, Middle Eastern, Korean, Mexican, American Burgers, Indian, and Thai. It's now called the ZED and I'm not sure where the business lines are all drawn but I wanted to come back and edit this review since the experience is so much better. Thank you, Zoigl!
Below is my original review from 5 years ago; I should've seen trouble coming when the waiter didn't write down our order and had to come back to ask what kind of cheese one of us asked for. One of our burgers arrived with a topping we didn't want removed and one we didn't want added. I asked for my burger to be medium and it came as a hockey puck of dryness. To be fair it seemed like the beef used was a pre-formed frozen patty so the kitchen might've been doing me a favor. I would have paid more for a quality meat option but there was none. On top of all this the flavors just didn't stand out. Why use smoked gouda in such thin slices you can't taste it or offer "pickled" veggies that were just fresh ones dunked in brine for half an hour? Our waiter did handle our complaints with aplomb and he got the manager to adjust the bill. The beer was great which is what brought me to the restaurant. I'm sure I'll still be buying the beer in the future but I'll be making better food to pair it with in my own kitchen. One last note, what is with the easy listening 80s/90s elevator music on a Saturday night? If you're throwing back in a German style pub at least let me hear 99 Luftballons or some...
