So my wife and I found ourselves in Portsmouth yesterday (Sunday 21 March) looking at the ships in dry dock (USS Tortuga and the USS Wasp) when wouldn't you know it, that ole hunger bug bit again. So after looking at Google for a hot minute we found the Olde Towne Public House and we ordered. Let's delve into this, shall we? We shall...... Fist, the ordering process was simple and detailed. Very easy to navigate, and it left no question unasked. (Extras, what kind of cheese, etc) So that was a plus. (We ordered take out cause we wanted to sit and eat by the water.) The order was an 8 inch pepperoni, sausage and spinach pizza, a ham and turkey club wrap with loaded fries on the side, potato skins, and a chili bowl. When you approach the building it looks a little unassuming. Basic canopy over a fenced off outdoor seating area, but the black does contrast well against the red brick so it is somewhat eye catching. But when you walk in, you are suddenly transported into this kind of sports bar/rustic decor time fusion. After looking around at the TVs with the Master's championship, and the woman's college basketball tournament playing, and the decor, it really worked well together. You could hear the games, but they weren't overpowering the guests. You could hear people talking as well so that's good. After a couple minutes, I got my order, and we went to the waterside to eat. FOOD TIME!!!! The pizza was really good. The edge crust had a slight crunch to it when you bit into it, but light and fluffy in the center. The bottom crust was light but firm enough to stay together when you pick it up. The sauce is slightly delicate with a hint of sweet and spice. Really worked well. Just the right amount of cheese and toppings to give you a very enjoyable bite. If my pallette is correct I belive they use a combination mozzarella and provolone mix for the cheese. The creaminess of the mozzarella versus the slight bitterness of the provolone adds a contrast to the sweetness of the sauce that just makes the whole pie. Very good. The ham and turkey club wrap had a very appealing presentation. When I opened the box I saw a tightly wrapped, grilled tortilla, cut in half so I could see the different layers. I like that. Nothing worse than biting into a wrap and realizing it's not right. This was perfect. Lots of ham, turkey and cheese. (Provolone in this case). Just the right amount of mayo and veggies, and grilled so it would stay together. The outside was grilled just enough so as to hold together but leave the inside cool, and leave the veggies crisp. The cheese and bacon were warm and delicious though. The pickles and tomatoes were cut into small chunks. Not sliced. At first I thought it was a little odd but after a few bites I realized that I was getting a full bite of everything. Not just a full slice of pickle or tomato. I really liked that. A warm, soft tortilla, crispy veggies, creamy cheese and mayo, warm bacon, and delicate strips of ham and turkey. Man that was so good. The potato skins were fantastic. They're everything you want in a potato skin. Crispy on the outside, tender, well cooked potato on the inside, crisp bacon, melted cheese and sour cream on the side. Just the perfect amount of salty, creamy, bacony goodness you'd expect. And finally, the chili bowl. Ok.....I will start by saying at first bite I wasn't very impressed. I'm one of those individuals that do not like sweetness in my chili or spaghetti sauce. When I eat chili, I want to taste the tomatoes and chili seasonings. I didn't get that...at first. After mixing it up a little, whoa!!!! There's the chili I was waiting for!!! Big chunks of beef, red beans, onions and cheese all in this savory broth that's so well seasoned that I couldn't stop eating it. Excellent!! If you find yourself in Olde Towne Portsmouth, and the hunger bug hits, hit this place up. Read moreMy family and I were looking for somewhere to eat and we’re a bit on a budget (total 4 adults and 2 children, we had $140) I did a quick Google search and about 10 slots down I saw this place. It had 2x$$ and the reviews were surprisingly great. Upon arrival, the ambiance was really lovely. Kind of an upscale bar vibe with beautiful old architecture. The service from the wait staff was good. They were friendly and assisted with anything we needed. The food…. THE FOOD 🤤 we ordered a kids pizza for the boys and it was delicious. Cooked in an open wood stove and just superb. My mom ordered the court street grilled chicken with asparagus, my brother ordered Shipyards Hangover burger which comes topped with an egg, my husband also ordered a burger and I ordered the grilled sirachi teriyaki salmon with a side of asparagus and Caesar salad. EVERYTHING was just perfect. We were expecting more so greasy bar food type but let me tell you, this was one of the best meals we have all had in a while! The chefs take pride in what they are doing there and it shows. Just absolute GRADE-A Our bill with appetizer, meals and drinks totaled around $102, so we tipped roughly $20 and the remaining of our $140 went to the chefs. I knew it wasn’t much but what they served to us that evening was just not meant to...
Read moreMaybe we just got unlucky, but THE FOOD we got was mediocre, skimpy, and overpriced. Some of the online ordering details were either not seem or they were disregarded by the cook, because we asked for 3 sides of coeslaw and we only got one. The best item we got was the Public House Smash Burger with melted cheddar (perfect), and the macaroni and cheese was good, (acording to my picky teenager). The worst item (to me...you might disagree) was the Baja Fish & Chips. The fries (aka English "chips") were "home fries" with a little skin (which I usually like, because that's where most of the taste and most of the protein are, in a potato), but the fries AND the fish were caked with clumps of what is probably the cheapest all-in-one Baja Salt Rub (rubs are not meant to be left on the fish or meat, and they're not ment to be used in place of serving salt, by the way).
ATMOSPHERE: What you would expect of a basic seaside pub, which is fine, given the location. But the outdoor seating area (right next to the entrance door) really ruined the vibe, because it is typically used as a lounge for multiple smokers who --of course-- gather at the upwind/entrance end of this open-air, fenced-in space (even though the restaurant owner theoretically follows the law by having a visible "NO SMOKING...
