We have been to Nick's on Broadway a couple times over the past year or two, and I have to say, it deserves every bit of it's 4.5 rating on Google.
First things first, the COVID regulations are top notch. It is, without question, the most conscious of all restaurants that my wife and I have been to during the pandemic. They only let one group into the restaurant at a time, all seating is currently outdoors, everything is in it's own individual packaging (silverware, sauces, etc.), everything is sanitized, and they make sure all guests know the rules and regulations for their own safety. I just read a review that chastised them for having people read the rules, which is completely insane to chastise in my mind. A+ job on the safety Nick's, and great job to the staff for being conscious about the pandemic.
As for the food, it's incredible. This time around, my wife and I ordered the Pumpkin Caramel French Toast, Squash Risotto with Chicken, Clam Chowder, Oysters, and the Mint Ice Cream Sandwich. The french toast was delicious. It had a slightly crunchy outside, soft inside, homemade whipped cream that was light and fluffy, and the pumpkin and caramel added a ton of flavor without being overwhelmingly sweet. The risotto was also top notch even though it was ever so slightly soupy (not much though). It's amazing how well seasoned it was, as I didn't even need to add salt or pepper myself. The kale added a bit of needed texture and the butternut squash added a slight sweet taste that really made the risotto sing. Can we discuss the chicken though? My god, that is some of the best non-fried chicken I've ever had. It was literally melt in your mouth good, which happens with steak, but I've never really experienced with chicken. Phenomenal.
While I didn't have the oysters or clam chowder myself, my wife thought the oysters were both delicious and fresh. She also said that the clam chowder was good, but not spectacular. It was a little different than your traditional clam chowder, which is not a bad thing, it just didn't blow her away. The homemade mint ice cream sandwich was a great way to finish off our meal, as you could really tell the ice cream was homemade. It had a really fresh mint taste to it rather than the artificial mont taste you get with store bought ice cream sandwiches or ice cream.
Overall, Nick's should be rated highly, as it's one of the best breakfast/brunch/lunch places not only in Providence, but throughout New England. It can certainly go toe-to-toe with places like Hot Suppa and Bayside American Cafe up in Portland, as well as "experience" places like the chocolate brunch at the Langham Hotel in Boston. Well done Nick's, keep up the good work and good food. Full disclaimer, this is also not my restaurant despite my name also...
Read moreNever thought I'd have to write a bad review for this spot, but it's necessary. My friend's visiting from Cali last Saturday, and I tell him to meet me at Nick's for brunch, because it's delicious. Unfortunately, I ended up feeling SO embarrassed to have brought him there, because of how terrible the service was from beginning to end.
I walk in around 9:45--a good amount of tables are full, but it's nowhere near as busy as it usually is for their weekend brunches. There's no host in sight, and no bartenders greet me either. As I stand there looking around, another couple comes in behind me. EVENTUALLY, a woman walks through the bar and goes to speak to the couple first. They clearly know I was there before them, but I guess no one cares. I then say, as politely as I can, "Umm, excuse me. I was waiting." We brush it off, and the woman seats me. My friend comes, the waitress (Sophie) takes our orders. We wait a bit for the food, which is fine; I know everything is made fresh. When the order's ready, a food runner brings it out. Again, that's fine. I've worked in the business, too. What ISN'T fine is that Sophie never comes back to check on us for the whole meal, even though she has another table right beside us (literally inches between the tables) and checks on them multiple times. After we cash out, my friend asks to speak to a manager. Apparently the manager is the same woman who had ignored and then sat me earlier. My friend isn't rude or anything; he basically just says, "I'm sure the waitress is a nice person and all, but the service was really bad." I also mention that he's visiting, and I brought him there because I usually love it and have introduced many friends to the restaurant. She gives us the most insincere, apathetic apology I've ever heard! Something like "oh, I'm sorry about that. Thanks for letting me know. Have a good trip." Like seriously?! Try a little harder. Unbelievable.
I'm not saying we definitely had this experience because of our race/skin color, but I just don't know why else we would have been treated with such disregard. We were nice, regular customers like everyone else.... I'm so disappointed. Not sure I should ever go back or recommend the restaurant...
Read morei was a first time customer here and came on a sunday afternoon for lunch with my family. it was packed so it seemed like it would be a great place. understandably, this was our first time here and didn’t know how popular it was so we didn’t make a reservation— that’s fine we were ok with waiting.
my gripe with this place was that the hostess at the front kept telling us 3 different wait times and situations. an initial 15 min wait for seats at the bar turned into 35 as we watched other folks get sat at the bar instead. we asked for an update and she said they were now cleaning a table for us and it would be 10 min. that patio table never came and we waited another 20.
we were finally sat down in the main room. the kitchen was bumbling and we were excited to try the food. to our disappointment we had to wait another hour for the food to come out. at this point i noticed diners on either side of me also growing dissatisfied and asking the waiter for a status update because we had all been waiting a while for our food. the waiter never came by after serving our drinks to get us something in the mean time just let us wait. they served our food one by one instead of altogether so we still had to wait for our individual plates. i get things are busy but be for real about wait times and managing customer expectations. it’s ridiculous to think this place is “so popular” considering the service was garbage and no one knew how to handle the customers when we reasonably were hungry and here for a good experience only to be met with long, non communicated wait times. it’s not that big of a place and there are clearly many cooks in the kitchen …i don’t know why it takes this long to make food or at least keep customers in the know??? i work in the service industry and get it can be overwhelming but at least TRY to make the experience for diners more transparent and comfortable.
if you want to come on a weekend, make a reservation. regardless, be prepared to spend hours here for dishes you can probably make at home and service where they don’t communicate. food was a 2/5 at best — pretty presentation though i’ll...
