Expensive. Very expensive. So much so to the point where it feels like an insult. $4 dollars for ONE weiner?? Are you kidding me? For one more buck you could go to McDonald's and get the 5 dollar meal deal. You'd get a burger or chicken sandwich along with a side of fries, nuggets and a drink. OR go to Burger King and get the $5 your way deal which is essentially the same thing. OR get the $6 Wendy's biggie which is also a great deal. For just one more dollar you got yourself a pretty good meal at these place, sides included. Oh yeah, let's talk about sides. Obviously one weiner isn't enough for most people as you can scoff it down in 2-3 bites, so you'd usually get a minimum of 2 weiners. That'll bump you up to around $8. Want some fries? 5 dollars. For that price you'd think it be a pretty good sized portion. It's a small. Add some coffee milk and your up another $4. Your total price will come up to a whopping $17 including tax. That price is what I would expect for two people, not one. If you cannot realize the utter insanity that is their prices, then you got an issue. I can't fathom the nerve on these guys to out right rob people for meh food. The food itself is... good. That's it. The price is just absurd. My go to place to get some quick food is the places I've previously stated. You get a great portion of food for a fraction of the price you'd pay here. It's a no-brainer. Prices aside, the staff's attitude and demeanor is really bad. As stated in other reviews they come across as rather rude. The only redeeming quality about this place is the atmosphere I suppose. "New England tradition" BAHAHAHAHAHHAH! If it's a tradition to get robbed, be my guest. In summary: Just save your money guys. Go spend it elsewhere, where you can get much more for a...
Read moreI feel like I wasn't even at the same restaurant that I'm seeing other reviewers talk about. My husband and I went with high hopes after reading so many good things about this place, and were SO disappointed.
The posted hours on Google say they're open until 2:00am. We went at 8:20 on on a Thursday night, and were treated like we were annoying, last-minute, end-of-the-night customers. The dining room was closed. We could only order from the window at the sidewalk, and had to eat in our car. They weren't serving their full menu. The ONLY things that we could get at 8:20 pm - FIVE AND HALF HOURS BEFORE THEY CLOSE - were hot dogs, french fries (couldn't even get the sweet potato fries listed on the menu, just regular fries), and soda. No coffee milk that everyone raves about. No chicken fingers. Just wieners, regular fries, and soda. Even worse, the guy at the window acted like he was annoyed that he even had to wait on us, like he was trying to close down for the night and we were holding him up.
The fries were soggy and undercooked, dripping with lukewarm oil. The wieners were just OK. Nothing like what we were expecting. They were dripping with oil, too. The oil on the griddle that they were cooking the wieners on was 1/2" deep. Look, you need some oil to get a good brown on a wiener, but you don't need half an inch of oil.
I'm guessing that this place used to be great at some point, but something changed, big time. We drove down from MA for a show at a club in Providence, and we were really excited about finally getting to try Olneyville's hot dogs and coffee milk. What a total disappointment. Why stay open until 2:00am if you're already rolling the place up at 8:00pm?? We could have gotten a better meal at the McDonald's...
Read moreOlneyville New York System is brilliant, little holdout of classic American diners, that prides itself on comforting food and efficient serving.
There is a great deal of charm that comes from hearing an order yelled across the restaurant, and considering the 30 seconds it took from time to order to drinks being on the table, it is clearly effective in addition to being endearing.
We ordered the highlighted hot wieners, which is an excellent take on a Coney Island dog; a boiled dog on a steamed bun with chili, mustard, and white onion. On top of generally being a good quality dog, the two standout aspects are the mustard and the chili. The mustard seems to be an earthier, mildly spicier mustard compared to the yellow mustard found on a Coney Island dog, and the chili matches that full, well-seasoned chili, which is notably lighter and less stew-like than the average chili, almost more like a meat sauce, keeping the dish as a whole from feeling too greasy and heavy. Definitely one of the best wieners I have ever had. The special also came with French fries, which were very solid, but without any particular highlights (though they do bring out malt vinegar, which is a big plus as far as I am concerned).
It also ended up being incredibly affordable. The special, consisting of 2 hot wieners, a small fry, and a beverage, was about $15, and easy to split, so it ended up being less than $10 per person.
All in all, Olneyville New York System provides an eclectic experience with a worthwhile meal, and I hope they can carry that forward now that Heritage Restaurant Group will be...
