"Off the beaten path."
We were on the way home (SE Florida) from the Tampa area and we're looking to get some breakfast along the way. We found this place on our Google search and decided to take the 6 additional minutes to go off our travel path in the hopes of having a quality breakfasts experience. Y'all alternative was to go to the Cracker Barrel right next to the interstate and potentially minimize the breakfast delay time to get home.
We took our chances, and we were not disappointed! John Ski's Breakfast & Lunch House is one of throes places that make going there a "destination," and not just a stop. From the moment you go in, you recognize it's the brainchild of someone who takes serving people with quality good food at decent prices, and ensuring fun at the same time, a calling.
I liken the restaurant to one of those places you see on shows like "Food Paradise" or on "Man versus Food." You can see from my pictures, it is fun, energetic, and an overall good vibe. What you can't see is how good the food tasted, the incredible service (the waiter picked up my straw wrapper in between refills- l love when they do that!), and feeling you get when an owner is fully invested into the idea he conceived of creating an excellent fun breakfast and lunch experience.
My wife and I were very pleased with all aspects of our experience. The food was very tasty- I had the Mother Ski's special and Lisa had the Eggs Benedict dish. We shared each other's food and honestly, I couldn't tell which one was better, as both were great. I had plenty of pancakes leftover as the portions they give you were ridiculously huge. The bacon was tasty- crispy and delicious. The eggs were cooked as ordered. The Diet Coke had the right blend of carbonation and syrup.
There is a wall of fame for those that can meet the breakfast challenge. The bathrooms were clean (see pics) and the cooks work really hard to get the food out on time.
We really enjoyed our experience and recommend you take the time to go off I-75 whenever you are in the Punta Gorda area; it is well worth the extra 6 mins...
Read moreWow. Hope it was just an "off day" but there wasn't anything good about my breakfast. The ice cold sausage gravy was apologized for after politely asking if they could microwave it for a minute or so. They brought back the same ice cold gravy but over a microwaved biscuit that was so hard you couldn't cut it with a knife. Asked for sausage link substitute for Kielbasa and was told there would be a slight upcharge. Told her no problem and received all kielbasa and no sausage patty or links. She again apologized and brought me a cold patty that had been burnt on one side and not cooked on the other. Then brought me a deep fried sausage link (just 1) and although this one item was hot, it was greasy as all get out and absolutely disgusting. The Texas toast was half toasted and left a pool of butter underneath it which was also nasty. The "extra crisp" hash browns were barely cooked and the over medium eggs were both nearly raw and broken on the plate. Not surprisingly, there was no offer to compensate me any portion of the nasty breakfast and for $22 and change, it surely wasn't worth it. Yes you get a fair portion of food but it's not good and you pay more for it. Never before has the old saying been more accurate: "the service was slow but the food was so bad, I didn't mind waiting". Save your money, this place isn't worth it. Being a fellow Detroiter, I wanted to support John Skis but I will never go back. I've never sent food back until today. The picture is what I wasn't able to eat ann I left...
Read moreSpent a few days in Florida bouncing between different Baseball parks during spring training and ended up staying in Punta Gorda. This place was the first that came up when we were looking for a breakfast place and ended up being the only place our group visited for breakfast our entire stay. Generally speaking the prices were right. Definitely not a low budget place but definitely not high end. Each day our groups breakfast ranged between 13 and 15 bucks each that included our coffee, OJ, Milk and a generous %25 tip. We had 3 different waitresses and each were pleasant friendly and attentive, I had the meatlovers omelet the first day but the Mama Ski breakfast my nephew ordered looked so good I went with that the rest of the stay. The pancakes here are Hugh. I am a big guy and they were even a little much for me on the Mama Ski's platter so I opted for the French Toast the next 2 days instead. All in All the 5 star rating is a combination of the cost, service, and food. The breakfast potatoes were awesome, fried golden crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. I really did not have one single complaint in the 4 days there. If you like a Big breakfast, with friendly service, at a reasonable price stop by and get the Mama Ski's breakfast. Back in Philly now and having some scrapple. I don't know why you can't get that in other parts...
