Hancock Tavern — Restaurant in Quincy

My hubby and I have been visiting the Tavern for years. We typically get take out as the atmosphere can sometimes be sketchy when eating in. For example tonight when we went there there was a lady sitting at the bar drinking beers with a baby in a baby carriage next to her. Not sure of any bar that would allow that as it’s wrong on so many levels. As most reviews mentioned the service is not so good inside as there is always only one server working and they are very short staffed. The food used to be exceptional but has definitely gone down in the past year.

Anyway tonight we both had entrees. With all entrees you get two sides. When we got the bill both entrees were $2 more than what was listed on the menu. When we asked the server she said I think there is an additional charge for side salads let me check. We said that was not listed on the menu and she grabbed a menu and all looked at it and she said “huh, let me go ask”. She came back and said that her and the bartender didn’t know how to credit so I’d have to contact the manager. When we got home I sent an email with a picture of the receipt.

The manager responded very unprofessionally from the start. He said there was an upcharge for side salads with a partial screenshot of the menu. I explained I didn’t see it listed and he said “did you not look at the menu”. I said I had looked at the menu more times than I could count and never saw anything. I said the waitress looked over the menu with us and she did not see anything either. He the proceeded to circle the screenshot and send it back.

Under sandwiches there is an asterisk stating to “ADD” sweet potato fries, tater tots or side salads there is a $2 fee. I explained we didn’t “add” anything we choose it as one of our two sides. I sent him a screen shot of the listed sides and he continued to argue with me. I then explained if there is an up charge for “premium type” sides it should be listed under the sides with the entrees like all other restaurants. If you look at the my screen shot of HIS menu it looks as though side salads are included as a regular side. He continued to be unprofessional and down right rude so I stopped responding.

It’s not about the money it’s about the principle. I’m so tired of restaurants overcharging and making excuses. I’m done with the “small business” trying to survive. I own a small business myself so I am well aware of the rising cost of doing business. As a small business owner I go out of my way to TRY to support other small businesses but owners like this make it impossible for us to support.

TERRIBLE service. The waitress practically ignored us all night, even though there were only two full tables. We had to ask for a glass three times before we got it. When we asked what sides came with the steak tips the waitress said we could choose any two from the list but did not tells us there were any charges. Then when the bill came they did charge us extras for sides, which we didn't expect. When we politely asked about it, we were IGNORED AND TREATED VERY RUDELY. We couldn't even get someone to come take our payment, let alone talk about the bill! When we went up and directly asked the woman making the decision (manager?), she dismissively mumbled something without even looking at us. TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE SERVICE.

Food was just okay. Steak tips were good, pizza wasn't, salad wasn't. Paid way too much for what we got. I would...

Erin, the bartender, pours a perfect drink, Her hands move with ease, she never has to think. She listens with care to every customer's tale, A smile on her face, she never seems to fail.

Her knowledge of cocktails is second to none, She can mix up a storm, it's all in good fun. She shakes and she stirs, all with such grace, And with every sip, customers find their happy place.

Erin is more than just a bartender, it's true, Her kind and warm heart make her stand out too. She's quick with a joke, and puts folks at ease, No wonder she's everyone's favorite barkeep to please.
