tl;dr legit NY-style pizza shop with the best cheesesteak on the main line.
When we moved to the burbs from center city a few years ago, we admittedly settled down with the first pizza place we found that had good, floppy pizza and a decent enough cheesesteak. Imagine my dismay when I tried Carla's for the first time this past week.
My wife and I tried the buffalo chicken cheesesteak and cheesesteak w/cooper sharp and fried onions, respectively. As someone who's used to John's Roast Pork and Cleavers, trying to find something comparable on the main line has been an exercise in futility... until now. With quality ingredients on a seeded roll, Carla's is the real deal.
The buffalo chicken cheesesteak was a little different than most, with American in place of blue cheese and the chicken was almost pulled as opposed to chopped frozen chip steak, which I thought was a nice break from the typical over-hot-sauced Sysco fare drowned in blue cheese. The cheesesteak was well-balanced with plenty of cheese, the right amount of fried onions, and perfectly cooked steak, all of which commingled nicely on the soft seeded roll.
I didn't plan on getting a slice of pizza when I stopped in, but after seeing it in the display, I had to give it a try and I'm glad I did. Again, it was different from most pizza shops in the area that either do pan style or their best NY-style approximation. This was legit, authentic NY-style pizza—thin, floppy, and chewy with a perfect crisp on the bottom, just the right amount of cheese, and a subtle marinara that didn't distract from the other simple ingredients (as a bonus, when the owner, who was also working the register, found out it was my first time there, he gave it to me on the house).
I can't wait to go back and explore more of the menu, including one of my favorites, a chicken parm sammy with sharp prov, made with their homemade chicken cutlets, another rarity among most pizza...
Read moreMy original review was based solely off the professionalism and welcoming nature of the owner. However, I have since tried several of the products and I have been told on many occasions I am a picky eater so I also enlisted my coworkers opinions when we ordered lunch for them on yesterday (4/12/23) The following is a joint review from myself and my coworkers:
Broccoli and Spinach pizza "probably the best pizza I've tasted. It was fresh and the sauce was amazing. I would make the 35 minute drive to order this again" Kim
Garlic Pesto "I originally ordered a large to share, but after the first slice I figured I hide the box in my office to take home because it was so delicious. It wasn't greasy but it was very flavorful." Lauren
BBQ Wings & Butcher's Block Pizza " I can't stop eating the pizza the meats are so fresh. The wings have an indescribable flavor but more than what you'd expect from a pizza shop" Everett
My family and I sampled all of the above minus the garlic pesto that my coworker refused to share. We also had the traditional cheese. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. The food was AMAZING. You got flavor, large portions and the prices were reasonable. The wings!!! My son attempting to call back and order more but they were sold out. Going forward we won't make the mistake of ordering the small portion.
This is my new favorite little pizza shop. Even if you're not local to Wayne its...
Read moreWish the new owners would wake up. Do they use great ingredients? Yes absolutely but this is WAYNE it's to be expected, what's not to be expected is how little you get for now much you spend. There's too many great places around for you to charge what you do specially when the best places in town have been long established. It's a shame cause I used to come here for the convenience as it's a 2 minute walk but I'd rather go into town and not be disappointed in how little i get for my money. Seems like the owners want details so I'll give them some 1 if your charging me for toppings I want said toppings on all the slices not skimped on to where some slices either don't have toppings or barely have any cause I might as well order a plain cheese and buy my own toppings, 2 if I order something like chicken chicken fingers and fries it'd be nice for it to not be kids menu size. In comparison I had a salad on Wednesday from another place in town and I couldn't finish it. Other places might charge more for some things but their still giving people their moneys worth, and I'm dropping your review a star for the cop out...
