I visit Yellow Dog Bread at least once a week. The location is scenically modern and easy to get to from downtown and north Raleigh. The Historic Mordecai and Oakwood neighborhoods are nearby and I like strolling through following my visits. The folks working here have always been friendly. They're easy to pick up conversation with when times are slow and professional and fast when things pick up. Also, Slingshot Cold Brew (a local coffee distributor down the street) is on tap!! I also love their selection of LightLighter beans for their drip coffee. I also highly recommend trying one of their homemade pop tarts on Saturdays. You'll have to get there early (before 2 anyway) or they will be gone and for good reason. A lot of places say they have the best made from scratch pop tarts but Yellow Dog could easily take that name honestly! Their scones are my go-to on weekdays, the cookies are all unique flavor blends, and the apple turnovers are a perfect combination of fluff, cinnamon and apple. Whether to sit with a friend or get some work done (during a slow time) I recommend Yellow Dog to anyone who is a fan of coffee, breads, and...
Read moreAfter not visiting Yellow Dog Bakery over the past couple of months, due to school being out, I decided my birthday would be the perfect day to pop in. Sadly, my visit was less than pleasant. I didn't get her name, but the young Asian woman at the counter was discourteous and dismissive when she finally took my order. I selected the blueberry frangiopane(sp?) and a blueberry muffin. Attempting small talk, I mentioned it's my birthday and I'm gonna treat myself. She said "happy birthday" and I said "thanks". She quickly grabbed and put the pastries in a bag. I look inside and they look like they were tossed in like dog biscuits. I pointed out the messy placement and asked if she could put a paper sheet between the pastries. She put the frangiopane in a separate little bag, then I look in the original bag and the muffin is upside down. Wow. The bakery was not particularly crowded and I can only imagine her actions were purposefully disrespectful. The service was underwhelming for such a good...
Read moreYellow Dog is the most recent addition to the blossoming Person/Blount Street business district in the northeastern section of downtown Raleigh.
I really like this place for a number of reasons:
They're focused on a very specific, high quality product. Everything I've had has been amazing - the multi-grain loaf, the maple bacon scone, and a few croissants to go with my coffee on the way into work The local products they carry. Juice from Happy and Hale, (Try the Jolly Greens, Beet It, or Rise and Shine) Nut Butters from Big Spoon Roasters out of Durham, and Cold Brew from Slingshot Coffee brewed literally right across the street. Location. Yellow Dog is within walking distance of the East/Northeast Downtown Raleigh neighborhoods (and very close to the R Line stop at Seaboard), will complement the other businesses that will soon open in the same complex, and fits very well into the already very locally focused community in...
