It’s all true. Customer service can be great or poor. But the cake? DAMN GOOD! No - Amazing!

My 1st experience was very bad. Tried to order online, using their email system. It was all bad. Poor communication and it felt like they didn’t want my business so I ordered from somewhere else.

So a year goes by. My hubby’s bday coming up, and he loved the idea of an orange and vanilla cake combo that he saw on “Some Crust’s”(Claremont) website. Unfortunately, an 8 day advance order was not enough for them. Cake Among Us was the only other local bakery I found with orange cake. So this time, I didn’t use their website. I called. Much better customer service this time!

I ordered an orange cake with orange mousse filling and cream cheese frosting. I told them it was for an adult male’s birthday, and let the baker decorate it as she wants. Now, I must admit, I was really disappointed in the decoration. It’s October, and an orange cake, so the decorative frosting was white and orange. But the “Happy birthday” was in black. It was very Halloweenish, not birthdayish. So note to self - have more of an idea of what I want.

But at the end of the day, it’s all about taste. And let me tell you!!! This cake was the most memorable cake we have ever had! It was delicious! And I’m not a fruity cake person. My favorites are chocolate, white wedding, coconut and carrot cakes. But now? Orange cake from Cake Among Us anytime I can afford it! Lol! Seriously, it was very expensive - almost $70 for a 7” round cake with no special decor. But it is sooooo good! Just once in your life order it!

Tips: Know that the prices online are grossly misleading. Add up charge for frosting, and orange cake (even though it doesn’t say there’s and extra charge for it online). Order early and by phone. Provide some idea for the design or be prepared for super basic. Order an orange cake with orange mousse filling and cream cheese icing. I called prior to placing my order just to make sure they had availability due to the holidays. They stated they had availability so I placed my order immediately as requested. I was happy because I really wanted a vegan smash cake since my son has an egg allergy. I placed my order and thought I was good. I received a confirmation email and they even asked me to send them inspiration photos of the cake I wanted. I thought this was weird because in the order form I wrote I would be happy with a simple all white smash cake! So didn’t think that it was necessary. When I sent them an email asking when would be a good pickup time to pick up the cake since I would have to pick up a day earlier since they are closed on Sundays, they responded with sorry we are booked for the weekend! I am so disappointed with this place. They have no remorse. I am now left with no smash cake for my son for who has an egg allergy. I wouldn’t trust this place, they just ruined a huge piece of my son’s birthday. If you order a cake from here do not trust them they apparently can cancel on you...

According to the worker i spoke to this bakery is under new ownership. I've bought many cakes from Cake Among Us in the past. Since moving to Rancho in 2018, I've bought no less than 8 birthday and event CUSTOM cakes. My kids have food allergies so I always order the Vegan cake. Last year, for my daughter's birthday, they mistakenly put a non-dairy candy in the decorations and caused her to have an allergic reaction. I was fine to forgive and forget because I had always had excellent experiences in the past. The price is high but was always worth it.

This year however, I ordered my usual vegan cake. The two stars are because it looked nice. The taste was terrible. The cake was hard and crumbly and extremely dry. Nothing like the cakes we have grown accustomed to. All of my guests threw their slices away and the birthday girl even requested to just throw the whole cake away at the end of the party.
