Have you ever walked into a place and just felt DISLIKED? That's how I felt this afternoon when I stopped in for a burger after reading the rave reviews about how friendly the service is.
My experience here could not have been more different. The server/cashier treated me with such cold indifference. She refused to look at me or acknowledge me both times when she brought the food to the table and later when I bused the tray. Each time she would turn her head away from me and continue to talk to other patrons, asking about turkey recipes and such. Even after I would say "thank you" she still refused to acknowledge me in any way. I had the sinking uncomfortable feeling that this is because I am Asian and she doesn't like my kind. She didn't come out and call me a "chink" but eating here brought back the same feelings I had from battling severe racial bullying while growing up in this part of the country.
I got a cheeseburger. They are cash only so now I have a pocket full of clanking coins for a burger that came to $4.10. The burger was pretty bad. It was two buns, patty, and cheese. No lettuce or tomato. The patty was thin, dry, and tasteless. A fast food place would have been a better choice and I never go to those.
All the other patrons here seem to be regulars and are known to the server. She would chat would each of them but treated me like I didn't exist. If you were white I guess you could give this place a try. Otherwise I would most definitely pass. Whatever race you are, if you care about your health, consider steering clear as 100% of the regulars who frequented here were...
Read moreThis place is the best! I’m a pretty finicky eater. I love their tuna sandwich. Sounds odd, tuna is nothing special, but they do it perfectly and it tastes better than any tuna sandwich I’ve ever had. Paul literally hand picks out any of the “yucky” pieces of tuna you come across when making it. Their roast beef is the best too. I can’t say enough about this little gem of a place! I’m moving to NH and will miss eating here regularly. Not to mention I’ll really miss seeing Paul and Val....
Read moreA great hole in the wall by the Reading MBTA train station, run by a husband (cook) and wife (cashier) team. Simple menu with excellent fried food and soft drinks, you can tell their fryer and soda machine are routinely serviced and well taken care of. I usually get a roast beef, fries and a Coke. At lunchtime you'll see lots of older residents and town employees grabbing lunch here, it's always busy but orders come out...
