My husband wanted fish fry on the last Friday of the official Lenten season. We decided to try out the Bierstube for the first time, and I'm glad we did!
The parking lot is pretty spacious, so no battling for a spot like you might need to in downtown. The bowling alley is in a separate part of the building; we couldn't see hear any sounds from there in the restaurant. We seated ourselves, as a sign advised, and were quickly brought menus. Service remained pretty good throughout our visit.
We both had drinks. My husband enjoyed the Bierstube Red, while I had a bottle of Angry Orchard cider. Our cheese curd appetizer was delicious, the curds hot and squeaky with a nice layer of breading.
For my main dish, I had the grilled cheese on pumpernickel along with the standard seasoned potato chips. Everything was really good--the sandwich had a great amount of cheese with a good, stringy pull. My husband LOVED the all you can eat fish fry. He declared it to be his favorite out of the local restaurants we've tried. His fries were great, too. After finishing off the main plate, he could request more fish from our server, and she'd bring out a piece at a time on a saucer.
I was in an indulgent mood, so we had dessert, too--the apple strudel. It was really good, the strudel piping-hot all the way through, served alongside a big scoop of ice cream. A caramel drizzle added the perfect final touch.
We'll definitely be back here, and...
Read moreBierstube USED to be the place to go....not anymore. They were very few customers and we watched as one couple got up and left after never being approached by waitstaff. Another Father had to go ask where their food was because he had hungry kids. It was clear our waiter has never been trained. We never got our salads. One of our meals was never ordered. Dinners came out randomly over 20 minutes so no one ate together. I could see the meals sitting under the warming plate. All I had to do was go up and grab them and serve our table but I knew that I wouldn't be able to do that. and there they sat for at least 20 minutes or more. They had run out of rice and never told us.
We were there 2 1/2 hours. Not until we started to get frustrated did any waitstaff jump in to help.
It is clear that they have a serious training and manager issue. If they do not get it under control quickly, there won't be a business to save. Normally that place is so busy you have to wait an hour to get seated but there was literally plenty of seating and no waiting for anybody. Except for your food of course. And I get that there is all new staff, but there's no excuse for terrible service or lack of training. It will be a long time before I go back. I'll be watching the reviews to see if it...
Read moreThe food is great! You know how you know? The Bierstube has been in Red Wing for 20 years. If the food wasn't great they would be closed. They also know what they are doing because there are 5 other Bierstubes in the Metro area. You know how many they have closed? Zero.
The atmosphere is robust but not so loud you can't here the person you came with. The room is clean and the staff are friendly. An early review said the drinks prices are high. I don't know if they are, but it helps keep the loser's out. So well done. You don't want to eat food in a place that has cheap drinks. The owner should consider a patio and maybe update the video games. I quit playing pong like 5 years ago.
The german food is authentic but they don't beat you over the head with it as their are many other offerings. To keep the creepy guys out the waitresses don't dress like the German waitresses in all of those old movies. They are dressed to serve.
Did you know in the past he has let mother's eat free on Mother's Day? Put that in the suggestion box the next time you want to have the best...
