So, I'm sorry to say it, but I was very disappointed by this place. It's got really great reviews, but the food frankly was not very good. like a lot of American sushi places they rely on these super complicated roles with tons of sauce where you can't even really taste the fish. But this place took it to a new level. There were like 10 different things in each of the rolls, plus sauces, so the final roll just really doesn't taste very good. Each piece of fish in a roll is sliced razor thin and they put like five of them in there, so you kind of can't even figure out what the taste of the roll is, but it's clear that it's not very good. Furthermore, the scallop roll tasted pretty fishy. And there was a Nigiri, the seared salmon that was pretty horrible as well. It was really dried out like it had been sitting there for a week, and gross. So honestly, the food was pretty bad. I had a friend down from Tahoe who lives in San Francisco, and I was pretty embarrassed and felt bad about it.
nonetheless, the atmosphere was social and upbeat . Not overly cool, though our server was probably 19 years old. it's definitely not an atmosphere like Kauboi Izakaya. I most definitely will not return.
my last observation is that while the eating area was clean , the bathroom was pretty nasty. There was a lot of crud and debris on the floor near the wall where you could tell that they haven't deep clean that bathroom for months. And the soap was out. That happens all the time but the fact that there was like a whole layer of debris on the floor, and mildew all around the tiles sink made me a little dubious.
So basically, the fish was old and fishy. The rolls were gross and the bathroom was pretty filthy.
There was one roll that was just OK and not bad , and several of the Nigiri were pretty decent. but the fish on top of the Nigiri was cut really small. I almost wanna say that even the rice itself was not that great. But I have been to a lot of fantastic sushi places all over the world. I'm not sure if this is just the low standards of Reno or if this place was particularly bad. I actually just think that this is as good as it gets in our town unfortunately 🤣🤣 We spent about $65 apiece so it's kind of a bummer that it wasn't very good. I had to keep apologizing over and over again...
Read moreWe love going to Tha Joint, and usually have great service and great food, but tonight we learned that large groups sometimes are not treated the same as smaller groups, due to the required 18% gratuity for parties over 8. That was the case tonight with our server.
First off, we had a 6:00 reservation for party of 9, came 15 minutes early, but did not get sat until after 6:15.
The server (name? Had green/teal highlights in her hair) came over to get drink orders and seemed confused by a round of waters and 2 Cokes.
We sent in our first order and got .our first round of sushi okay, but after that, she didn’t come back to check on us, or even make eye contact, most of the evening.
After a while, we were wanting to order more sushi, but our server was no where to be found. After waiting 20 minutes, I walked up to the counter to get another ticket. We filled it out, and then had to walk it back up to the counter because the server still had not stopped by.
The other servers brought out our food, while our server was clearly more concerned with her other tables.
When our server did finally stop by, there was no apology or even realization she had not stopped been attending to us at all. And rather than clear our plates or offer dessert, she instead only told us about 18% gratuity being added automatically due to the size of our party. As she tried to rush away again, we asked for refills, which took another 10-15 minutes to get.
It was then we realized she wasn’t attending to us because she knew our gratuity was already guaranteed, while the others were not.
She never offered us dessert, but was offering dessert to all of her tables around us. By that point, though, we were just ready to call it a night and asked for our check, which took another 15 minutes to get.
When she brought us our check, she then told us we could only pay on one card because it was a larger group, which is not true because we have had checks split in the past.
We were really unhappy with the service from this server. As a former server, I understand being swamped but I also understand being more courteous and aware of the major inconvenience being caused to a party when I’m not attending to them. We hope that our experience will be...
Read moreWe accidentally went to the wrong location first, off pyramid. Before Covid we would go to this location for special occasions. The hostess was rude and abrupt. The inside was dingy, making it appear dirty. They were storing food containers on one of the tables that couldn't be used due to COVID spacing. I was actually glad at first this wasn't the correct location. We were meeting our daughter and friends to celebrate her graduation from UNR. Once we realized that were at the wrong one, we headed down to the Plumb Ln one. It wasn't very crowded when we arrived, although there were about ten teenagers hanging out, out front. It didn't appear as if they were waiting for a table. We arrived just before my daughter and her friends put in their order. I placed my order along with theirs. Now mind you I had not eaten all day. Everyone's food except mine arrived, that was five in out of six people's orders. Everyone had eaten their sushi, except my husband who order spicy chicken that was inedible. It was dry and all it tasted of was peppers, way too hot and I love spicy food. He ordered chicken teriyaki. I asked at that time where my food was. The waiter rushed off some answer about it almost being done. This was 30 minutes after everyone got their first plate. My husband's teriyaki and kids second plate showed up, by this time I was ready to go to McDonald's I was so desperate for food. Again I asked where my food was and received same brushed off answer. And finally my food came. The sushi is nothing to write home about. It now taste like the sushi found all around town and after this fiasco, I would never go back. I think New Orleans permanently spoiled my taste for any sushi in this town. But I do still occasionally crave it and before COVID that joint was a decent place. I couldn't stay in there one more moment and waited in car for husband. Those groups of teens were still right out side being normal rude and obnoxious as well as many inside. Apparently this is that joints new clientele. They...
