My friends and I made a reservation to sit on the patio today. When the reservation was made on Friday, we were told they took them for 8 or more people. When we got there, they did not have our table ready. We are all flexible and understanding people and the fact that everyone is trying to roll with the fluid situation of covid we were totally fine with it. However, when they did try to seat us, they tried to sit us at a table that was technically in the parking lot in direct sunlight. Some of the ladies couldn’t even sit down in fear of burning their exposed legs on the chairs. When asked if we could get an umbrella, they said they had ordered new ones but they kept flying off. They asked us to wait a few more minutes until they could find us some shade. Again, no biggie. When we were finally seated we waited a good amount of time until our waitress showed up. Was kinda weird because the place wasn’t that busy. We were waiting for one more person in our party and had 2 people not show up due to illness/family emergency. When she asked if we were waiting for someone else, we said we had one more person. The waitress, whose name was Heather, then said, “ oh, you all don’t have 4 more people showing up? Because we only take reservations for 10 or more people.” Awkward silence, awkward silence... we all looked around at each other and said,” oh I’m sorry we were told 8 or more.” Awkward silence again. Heather then says, “ no we only take 10 or more we wouldn’t take a reservation for any less.” Again, the most uncomfortable silence that made our whole party feel like we were in trouble. To the point where we offered to get up and move, even though there was NO ONE else waiting for tables. She then carried on to take our drink orders with this air about her like, "oh I told them." The whole time we were made to feel like we broke some kind of law and were being punished for it by this waitress giving us slow, horrible service. Our food took forever, our drinks ran out multiple times. Our waitress was nowhere in site. Saw other waitresses go to their tables many more times than ours. My friend asked for her coke twice, and after the second time another friend went in to ask for the soda. Another waitress accosted my friend for not wearing her facial covering while asking for the soda. My friend apologized and offered to go back outside and grab her mask and come back in to get the soda. At this point the soda was brought out to us, but funny thing is is that while my friend was told to put her mask on, I saw multiple employees inside without their face coverings on. One guy was pouring drinks with his mask hanging off his ear and our waitress was ringing our bills up with her mask pulled down. To top it all off, my friend’s husband went inside to use the bathroom and overheard Heather the waitress talking smack about our table. If we hadn’t planned this outing to celebrate our friends recent marriage, we would have gotten up and left. The customer service was horrible. Funny thing is our table had TWO Customer Service Managers and we both agreed that we would never treat paying customers that way, ESPECIALLY over a small misunderstanding that was not our fault. I just don’t get why we deserved to be treated this way. We will not be returning to this establishment. There are plenty of other places to go...
Read moreMy parents and mother in law came for lunch today. Got seated and greeted right away. We ordered a couple beers and a pretzel with beer cheese to start with then ordered our entrees once she brought our drinks. After 30 minutes of waiting, we were out of drinks and without our appetizer so we finally flagged our waitress down (since she never came back to our table) asking about where our appetizer was. I’m assuming the pretzels are pre-made and essentially just heated up. I’m pretty certain she just forgot to ring it in because people around us were getting their food. Anyways, the pretzel finally came and it was tiny and over priced. Beer cheese was good. After another half hour of waiting, our food finally came. At this point, we have been there for over an hour. We had no silverware and asked someone else since we couldn’t find our waitress. I guess he told our waitress because she ended up bringing it out. Food was mediocre. My dad had white chicken chili and he said it was pretty gross. I gave him the rest of my sandwich because I felt bad. Our waitress would have known this if she ever came back to ask how everything was. I wanted some ranch and a refill of my soda but knew finding our waitress was close to impossible so we just ate. The bill was $81. There were 4 of us. My mother in law tipped $10 directly to the waitress and my dad was going to leave another $5 on the table. $15 on an $81 tab is over 18% for pretty terrible service. As we were wrapping up our drinks, the waitress stopped at our table and said “$10 on $81, great” and stormed away obviously sarcastically and with a terrible attitude. Because we hadn’t laid the $5 on the table yet. At this point, I’m flabbergasted. Then my mom was coming back from the bathroom and she STOPPED her and said the same exact thing. How RUDE especially because we were leaving additional tip on the table. At this point, we left her a little over 15% for her snarky comments. I made sure to stop in and let her know we left her more money on the table (she was talking trash to her coworkers about us when I approached her). I also let her know we didn’t appreciate her attitude about her suspected tip and that her service was bad. It’s Halloween and she was dressed as joe dirt. We don’t know her name, but her sense of entitlement for a huge tip for lousy service was astonishing. We love legends but probably...
Read moreJust across the river from my hotel this was the coolest place to hang out. A huge deck that made day drinking a pleasure. Whether by myself or with some new local friends I made. The view alone give them a star. Full sky line and the green trees shows me a lot of the beauty RVA provides.
RVA from what I've experienced doesn't have high IBU's or ABV's per style, aside from Hardeywood and this was more of that usual stuff.
This is really more of a restaurant than a pure brewery. I'm used to seeing maybe pretzels or food truck of just a BBQ grill, but never a whole restaurant. Unlike Karl Strauss Brewery Restaurants and Stone Garden's back home they showcase the restaurant, here it's really not about either. It's cool, but not groundbreaking and doing nothing new.
Tip: Mosquito's are pretty ridic in the summertime, granted I'm not from around here I saw a mosquito the size of an oyster.
Having had so much good seafood I thought it safe to try the beer mussels. Normally i use wine if i use alcohol in my seafood or mussels, but never beer. Bland despite it sounding amazing. Good value for a pound of mussels though you get what you pay for. Fried pickles were decent, but i did like the jalapeno ranch and to me it went well with the onion rings. Fried well, but could use some spice in the batter. So they said the mushroom swiss goes well with the brown ale, but when the burger is overcooked and dry even the avo ranch can't bring it back you get the fact that it's still a brewery.
Lets get to the beer.
Hopfest is as it's name states full of aroma and flavor, but i hate to say that pine kills it for me. Stout was better, but the sour fruit and raisin taste again turned me off. I loved the lager, clean finish and light, allowed me to put these away like the fizzy beer we all hate. Brown ale was my favorite, probably because of all the barrels of Newcastle I've had over the years, but a little fruity sweetness to finish.
Ok so the food was mediocre. The beer was better than average, amazing view, but the service was poor all around. the decor i fully expected a little more thought to be put into it. It really doesn't do the skyline view justice. It's still super fun and i can see why it's a must see. Don't worry with good enough friends most of this can...
