My family has been coming here for literal decades, even when they were located in their previous location further down on San Pablo Ave. My grandparents loved going there when they were still alive and got to know the owner and staff well. Nearly all of the adults' birthdays were spent there.
Family doesn't eat out nearly as often these days, but still visits from time to time. We decided to get a large take-out order from here for Christmas dinner this year. I called early in the afternoon for a 5pm pick-up to give them time especially because we were ordering a whole Peking duck.
We arrived at 5pm to pick-up the order, but it wasn't ready yet, but they were unsurprisingly VERY busy with a ton of take-out orders and a good handful of parties dining in as well. The staff was doing their best to juggle both take-out orders and those dining in, but the system is old-fashioned with pen and paper. They would probably operate faster and with a little less chaos with some kind of computerized system, but they seem determined to stay with the traditional system. We were patient and waited to be asked which order we were waiting for and for our food to be ready. (Other people waiting were patient as well, but I can imagine there could be people who would get impatient and unforgiving.)
Finally the order was ready and we took everything home. Everything we ordered was correct and looked great for take-out. The Peking duck looked amazing (even though I couldn't eat it), and the rest of my family said it was delicious and perfectly cooked. My dad was savoring it and feeling nostalgic as he ate.
I got an order of salt & pepper tofu, which, despite being fried, was surprisingly very light and fluffy. I inhaled a lot of that tofu. We also got an order of garlic pea vines, which are delightfully delicious. Easily one of my favorite vegetables that I don't often eat.
Boyfriend got their garlic chicken and really enjoyed it. (My dad tried some of it, too, and also really enjoyed it.)
We were extremely satisfied with our entire meal and happy to have some traditional Cantonese food for...
Read moreThe food was good and had a genuine"wok-hey" taste. We ordered a lot of food but the most memorable was the fried rice and the beef cheung-fun. The first time we came here years ago the dishes had a good amount of food on them. As years weren't by the amount of food started to get smaller and smaller. After getting more plays than good we stopped visiting the restaurant for several years. This year we decided to have an after Thanksgiving family get together and booked a reservation for 16 people and I was surprised that the amount of food that came on the plate was plentiful and delicious. Knowing this, I will start coming here again to get my Chinese food.
May 26, 2023 update: came here for a quick evening outing. We went half an hour before they closed so we ordered really quickly and the staff was very nice and the food came out fast. We ordered our usual favorites which were the BBQ pork fried rice, salt & pepper dry fried fish, salt & pepper pork rib, beef cheung-fun, stir-fried garlic pea-vine. All the dishes were delicious except the pea vine vegetables which was a bit gritty with sand. I think the cooks were rushing to finish the dishes since it was closing time and didn't rinse the vegetables good enough. The staff was very friendly and personable even though it was past closing by the time we finished eating. I'd still come here for food, it's one of the better Chinese restaurants in the area.
2/25/24 update: had a great dinner meal here today. We ordered a couple new dishes to try . The Deep-fried stuffed tofu were delicious. They were huge cubes of tofu that were crunchy on the outside but silky soft inside with a shrimp on top. Use a bit of the soy sauce that it comes with and the tofu block explodes with flavor. We also ordered the sweet and sour pork dish and that too was delicious. The pork was still a bit crunchy from being deep fried and the sauce was balanced well with sweet and sour. The bell peppers were fresh and crunchy and the pineapple was...
Read moreAt first glance, the place seems like your typical Americanized Chinese restaurant serving Mu-Shu pork and sweet and sour chicken. While they do offer those dishes, the rest of the menu is pretty legit.
I've been coming here for a while and that says a lot since I am Chinese and when it comes to Chinese food, I don't settle for anything less. The place is usually pretty packed during dinner time and the parking lot is tiny, so you may have to park on the street.
Even if you are getting takeout, expect to wait a bit as they normally have a line for that as well. Definitely call in if you are getting takeout, so you don't have to sit and wait there for 15-20 minutes for nothing. They do take credit card which is nice because many asian restaurants do not. The lady that answers the phone/works the cash register may come off a bit rude and impatient. She's straight to the point and doesn't really smile. She might even hang up the phone right after you give her the order, so be sure to ask how long the wait is for your order until pickup.
If you're coming in a big group, this is the place to go. For $15 per person, you can get a S* ton of food. The family portions start at 2 people, but with 3-4 you get additional dishes on top of that. The portions are adjusted to the party size, so there will be more than enough food. We are NEVER able to finish the food we order when we go with this option. I think with 4 people we had Mu shu pork, sweet and sour soup, Sweet and sour pork, Salt and pepper spare ribs (my personal fav), Mongolian beef (another fav), Egg rolls, kung pao chicken, and bbq pork fried rice.
If you're looking for good cheap chinese food, this...
